Streletsky island Prague boat station. Streletsky Island in Prague is a pretty park with a summer cinema. Czech Republic: Prague - Prague bridges, part 5. Lehi's bridge

Streletsky Island and Kampa

Not far from the Uyezd, the Legia Bridge (most Legi?) Is thrown across the Vltava, the former Franz Josef Bridge, renamed in honor of legionnaires - Czech and Slovak units who fought in the First World War as part of the armies of the Entente countries (including the Russian army). The bridge goes over Streletsky Island(St? Eleck? Ostrov), bearing this name since the 16th century, when Prague snipers began to hone their skills here. In summer, the open-air cinema shows movies every evening, and concerts are held on weekends. The academic year ends in May with Mayoles' merry drunkenness: costumed students walk in crowds across Prague in the direction of Streletsky Island, where they then choose the king and queen of the holiday. In 1968, Allen Ginsberg was elected king of Mayoles.

On the way to the next island, you can take a short detour along Ržični Street (??? n?). On one of the houses on its right side there is a silhouette of a memorial plaque dedicated to the Czapek brothers. It is written in chalk: "There was a memorial plaque here, and someone resisted it." The new board hangs above the entrance to the house, in an inaccessible place.

And at the end of the street there is already an entrance to the next island, Campa(Kampa). In summer, there are many young people playing bowls and badminton or just lying on the grass (there is an excellent playground for the very young). The only negative is the lack of a good restaurant. The four on Kampa are not so much tasty as expensive and snobbish.

The island has been called so since 1770, and of the many guesses about the origin of the name, the most plausible is that it was named after Tikhon Gansgeb from Kampa, who had a house here. Another version says that the island got its name thanks to the Spaniards, who stood here as a military camp (campa).

It is difficult to immediately understand that Kampa is an island. The channel makes it an island Devil(? ertovka) - apparently, a canal dug to reduce the destructive force of floods. Its name comes from one evil woman who annoyed everyone around. Once she ordered to paint a fresco on the facade of her house, which was supposed to depict seven devils. Apparently, she also got sick of the artist, so instead of seven devils, he drew six, implying that the seventh is the mistress of the house herself. The house with devils was on the site of the current N14 on Maltese Square.

There are few attractions to explore on Kampa. There is water Hut mill with a wooden wheel, standing on Chertovka, according to some sources, since 1498, and according to others - since 1293. The current building is somewhat younger - the 15th century - and rebuilt in the early Baroque style.

To the right of the mill, on the other bank of the Chertovka, stands Mikhnov Palace(he is Tyrshov's house). An ordinary secretary of the Czech Chancellery, Pavel Mikhna made friends with the victors at White Mountain, thanks to which he made a fabulous profit and built one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Prague. However, the wealth was not enough to maintain the palace, and it had to be sold. In 1921, the building was taken over by the Sokol Sports Society. By the name of the founder of the society, Miroslav Tyrsh, it is now called. Now the palace houses the Museum of Physical Education and Sports, as well as a hostel.

In the hexagonal Liechtenstein palace(Lichten? Tejnsk? Pal? C) in Kampa, the Germans wanted to celebrate the capture of Prague, but the flood prevented, which flooded Kampa along with the mansion. After the flood, all awards, archives and weapons were kept here, but the Czechs who occupied it in May 1945 found only three SS men guarding it is not clear what: the Germans took out everything of value, and burned the rest. In communist times, the palace was turned into a hotel for high-ranking guests. The queens of the Netherlands and Denmark, the Spanish royal couple, the Portuguese president and Elizabeth II stayed here with her husband, Prince Philip. And in post-communist times in the palace that episode of the film "Mission Impossible-2" was filmed, where Tom Cruise comes to a reception at the American embassy.

Behind the palace begins the territory of the old market, which was closed in the early 1990s, and the resulting square on the Camp(Na Kamp?) Planted with trees. Between N2 and 3 there is a very narrow passage to the Velkoperzhevor mill, founded by the Knights Hospitallers in 1400. This is the water mill that can be seen from the Charles Bridge. Now a huge - 8 meters in diameter - wooden wheel is spinning idle for the amusement of those walking.

On the square, all the houses are full of names: "At the blue fox", "At the golden cluster", "At the brown horse", "At the white shoe", "At the yellow rose", "At the yellow scissors" and "At the golden lion". They appeared at the beginning of the 17th century, but each went through a restructuring in different eras, so the facades look very colorful - from Baroque to New Gothic.

The northern end of the Kampa passes under the Charles Bridge, and there is another small bridge - across the Chertovka. To the left and to the right of him, the so-called Prague Venice- the place where the houses go directly to the Devil's. In the winery under the bridge, a glass of wine costs twice as much as in most other places, but you can sit and stare at the mill wheel.

Around Wallenstein Square

The easiest way to get to Wallenstein Square is by Tomashskaya street(Tom ?? sk?) From the church of St. Nicholas. On the way, you should pay attention to the baroque house "At the Golden Deer", named so because of the sculpture of St. Humbert with a deer. The sculpture was sculpted by one of the Brokoffs, and the house itself was built by one of the Dientzenhofers (1725).

Half Wallenstein Square(Vald? Tejnsk? N? M? St?) Occupies a completely incredible facade Wallenstein Palace(Vald? Tejnsk? Pal? C). The great commander in chief of the imperial army in the Thirty Years' War, Albrecht von Waldstein (1583-1634) built it at the peak of his career, in 1629.

A poor and not very noble nobleman, as a result of a successful marriage, Waldstein first received a huge fortune, and then the friendship of Crown Prince Ferdinand. When Ferdinand became emperor, he appointed Wallenstein marshal, who conquered half of Germany for the emperor and received a quarter of Bohemia as a reward. The imperial commander-in-chief multiplied the already enormous wealth in the Thirty Years War by supplying from his numerous estates for his own army. Envious people, especially the old nobility, who feared an upstart, began to accuse Wallenstein of conspiring to seize power. Among the conspirators were the old associates of the marshal, for example, General Jan from Aldringen, who owned the Auersperg Palace in the same square (N1). The emperor readily believed the slander against the old friend who had risen too high and first removed Wallenstein from command, and then sent assassins to him.

The marshal's money was taken away from the Waldsteins only in May 1945, and they were declared to be accomplices of the Nazis. Now the Senate sits in the palace, but on weekends, visitors are allowed inside to look at the art of the 17th-18th centuries. A good half of the canvases depicts the duke himself.

All other palaces on Wallenstein Square, in comparison with the ducal one, look rather siro. But behind them are hiding Ledeburg gardens(Ledebursk? Zahrada), stretching from here to the Castle itself. You can get there from the square through the courtyard of the Ledeburg Palace (along the stairs to the gallery). In fact, these are four gardens - Ledeburgsky, Palfiovsky, Cherninsky and Furstenburgsky. They let you into the first three, although for money, but you won't get into the fourth at all: this is the territory of the Polish embassy. The main decoration of the united gardens under the Prague Castle is the complex red staircase built in the 18th century by Palliardi and the sculpture of Hercules below, preserved from the original design of the gardens.

Around the corner from Waldstein Square, there is a narrow curved street U Zlata Studni. Under the very City, she leads to a dead end, to house "At the Golden Well"(U Zlat? Studn?), Whose name it bears. In front of the bas-relief "Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well" above the entrance to the house, John Dee prayed for the disclosure of the secret of the philosopher's stone in Meyrink's novel "The Angel of the West Window". On the well chute, the writer saw the inscription: "Deus est spiritus" ("God is a spirit").

Wallenstein gardens(Vald? Tejnsk? Zahrada) behind the Marshal's palace was the first park in Prague built according to the plan: before that, the greenery huddled wherever it could be, without disturbing the landscape. For the construction of the park, 25 houses, 7 gardens and even one tower were demolished. The greenhouses were used to grow pineapples, agaves and citrus fruits. Now there is nothing to eat there - except to catch one of the incredible carp swimming in the pond. The sculptures in the garden are copies of the works of the famous Dutch sculptor Adrian de Vries. The originals during the Thirty Years' War were taken by the Swedes to Drottningholm, where they are still located.

You can get to the Wallenstein Gardens from the side Letenskaya street(Letensk?), Where the U Svat? Ho Tom ?? e brewery adjoins right to the wall. It is the oldest surviving brewery in Prague and dates back to the 14th century. True, now their beer is no longer brewed here, but traditional varieties are sold at unconventionally high prices. He bears his name in the neighboring St. Thomas Church(sv. Tom ??), the present appearance of which dates back to its Baroque alteration by Kilian-Ignaz Dientzenhofer (1731). But the sculptures of Saints Augustine and Thomas on the facade are pre-perestroika, 1686. Letenskaya Street stretches along the entire wall of the Waldenstein Palace right up to the park in front of the Malostransk? Metro station. There it finally converges with Wallenstein Street, which bends around the marshal's mansion on the other side.

Over the subway on the hill Klarov(Kl? Rov) is a villa that used to belong to the first Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia Karl Kramarzh. He was a great Russophile, he even married a Russian, and inside the villa everything was lined with samovars and other Russian artifacts. Since then, prime ministers have traditionally lived here. By the time the guide went to print, Milos Zeman was still living in the villa, but to the delight of many Czechs, when the book goes on sale, he will no longer be there (Zeman did not nominate himself for parliamentary elections, which will be held in June 2002) ...

If you are not tired of green spaces yet, you can also look into Voyanov gardens(Vojanovy sady), which stretch on the other side of the metro. It is very quiet there, birds are singing, peacocks are walking. In the fall, it is not forbidden to fill up pockets of ripe pears and apples. The entrance to the former garden of the Carmelite monastery, laid out in 1670, is from U lu? Ick? Ho semin? E street; along it, you can then calmly return to the Charles Bridge.

Good afternoon, friends and readers! Today we will go together to Streletsky Island in Prague. Here is a resting place - a small, cozy park. It attracts tourists and locals alike. Mothers with children, couples in love, students flock here at any time of the year. In summer, you can walk along the shady alleys, lie on the grass or watch a movie in the open air.

Administrative Region of Prague 1. Border of historic districts and.

The island has an ancient history. Once upon a time, King Charles IV gave the island to the Czech archers. Hence the name of the place Střelecký ostrov.

There are no museums, watermills, and ghosts like there are. There are no archers left here and, in fact, there are no buildings. It's just a park on an island.

Park on a small island

The area of this small piece of land between the two banks of the Vltava is only 2.5 hectares. There is also a summer cinema here. On summer evenings, many people like to come to Střelecký ostrov to watch a movie or just sit on a bench by the river bank and watch the evening glimpses of the city.

There are many types of trees and a wide variety of wild plants growing in the park. Ducks and swans often come here. Swans are healthy and spoiled. They don't ask for food - they take it away. It is strange that there is no legend about some customs officer who turned into a swan and continues to collect tribute to this day.

There is such a story, unconfirmed, that one of the plane trees was planted by Charles IV himself. They also say that there used to be a sign here and everyone knew which tree was planted by the hands of the monarch. But now it is irretrievably lost.

Historical past

We have not just chosen the island as the place of today's walk. He has a great historical past. Already in the XII century there were the first written records of this place. Then the only owners of the island were Czech kings.

Now there is a walking and recreation area, and in those distant times, special royal hops were grown on the island. A little later, the island was donated to the archers for training and competitions, there were shooting ranges here. Archers, crossbowmen competed in their difficult business.

By the way, some competitions take place on the island to this day.

The island was presented to the archers by Charles IV, but the monarchs who replaced him did not like this decision. For a long time there were strife over who owns the tiny island.

The biggest challenge is how to get here? In the Middle Ages, there were no bridges yet, so they had to be melted down on boats. The magistrate forbade the archers to build their own ship, so that they would not depend on the desire and unwillingness of private carriers.

For some time the romantic name "Little Venice" was stuck behind the island. Sometimes it was called "Lawn", or the word "Vaserhof", which is incomprehensible to our ears. People called him simply "Strzhelak". Today you can also hear this name from the locals.

What's on the island today

The Legia Bridge runs over the island. From it you can go down the stairs. There is also an alternative way - an elevator. This method is much more convenient, because mothers with babies and strollers like to walk in the park.

Each year, it hosts one major event for all students: the Mayales Carnival. All night long, carefree students dance, have fun and have fun in the park alleys. At the end, the king and queen of the carnival are chosen.

Recently, the Streletsky Ostrov restaurant has been operating here. Well worth a stop if you like traditional Czech cuisine. There is a beautiful view of the river, the National Theater is visible.

We talked about the fact that there is a cinema on the island and you can watch a movie. For 12 years now, the Chadik brothers have been organizing shows in the summer. You will find the show schedule next to the cinema.

How to get there

By tram: No. 6, 9, 17, 18 you can still get to 22; 53, 57 and 58, 59. The stop is called Národní divadlo

Streletsky Island on the map

Friends! Thank you, we are very pleased that you are reading us. There are many more travel stories in store. For now, let's make friends through social networks and discuss travel together. Until next time!

Hello! Friends, I don’t know if you need a rest in a calm and beautiful place during city tours? .. Personally, from time to time I want to sit on a bench on the sidelines, relax and just watch what is happening. Streletsky Island in Prague is perfect for such a vacation as you get to know the Czech capital. Hardly anyone would refuse to walk in such a park:

The advantages of Streletsky Island are that it is located directly in the central part of Prague, and even in the middle of the Vltava, which provides an excellent view of both banks, the neighboring Charles Bridge with its Gothic towers and many more sights. And can you imagine ?! Everything is so close, and many have not even heard of Streletsky Island in Prague. Therefore, now we learn about the island, if not all, then a lot:

  1. Where is Streletsky Island
  2. Some facts of island history
  3. How to get to Streletsky Island
  4. What is interesting about the island on the Vltava

Where is Streletsky Island in Prague

Streletsky Island belongs to the group of islands that are located on a rather short stretch of the Vltava, bounded by the Karlov and Jirask bridges. Kampa, Streletsky Island and Children's are concentrated here.

It would seem an attractive phenomenon - the islands on the river in the center of the city. But tourists running after a guide don't even pay attention to the islands)) No wonder. They run along, where all the attention is riveted by sculptures and views of monumental architectural objects. How far is it to the islands ...

Streletsky Island is special in that it seemed to have grown in the middle of the river in the form of an Indian pie:

This is a side view of the island. In the photo you can see the part of the island that stretches towards the Charles Bridge along the Vltava river. All of it is a park area, and there are no structures here.

About the same part of the island stretches in the opposite direction, if you look against the current:

Behind the autumn foliage you can see a building - the only one on the island. The first stone building appeared on the island a long time ago - at the beginning of the 19th century. Since then, the house has been modified and expanded, but has retained its foundation.

So, we looked to the left, we looked to the right, and what is in the center? The central part of the island is hidden under a bridge. The Legia Bridge connects the two banks of the Vltava, overhanging the Streletsky Island:

But this is now a bridge over the island. And there was a time when the island was inaccessible. A kind of tidbit: it is nearby, and it is difficult to get there. Its inaccessibility was due to the violent disposition of the Vltava. In the last century, this temper has been tamed by equipping river rapids, which, in addition to being useful, have also brought entertainment.

Nevertheless, for several centuries, Streletsky Island has been popular with a certain category of Prague residents. And that category was arrows.

Some facts of island history

The history of the island stretches back to the 12th century. At that time, grapes and hops were grown on Streletsky Island, as well as on the neighboring Kampa. But gradually this island began to be used for archery and crossbow shooting.

In the XIV century, Charles IV officially confirmed the purpose of this island for such exercises, and the shooters competed in shooting at models of birds.

As soon as the island was not named in its long history of existence! He was also a herbalist, since he was always distinguished by lush vegetation. They called it the Vodny Yard, since it was formed in the middle of the Vltava. And a few more names that never caught on. The name Streletsky Island appeared only in the 16th century.

Shooting was banned on the island in 1913. True, there was a deviation from this prohibition in 1937, but it was also soon suppressed.

The size of the island is small. With an area of about 2.5 hectares, it stretches for about 750 m in length and reaches 140 m in its widest part. The widest part is at the bridge:

But this is a one-way view from the central alley of the island. The same lawn is located on the other side of the alleys:

Friends, I want to show you how good Streletsky Island is in different seasons. Therefore, I post photos of the island, decorated with autumn gilding, and in the early spring season, when emerald leaves just appeared on the trees. In summer, there is a pleasant coolness under the shade of numerous trees. I suppose that the island is beautiful with snow, but in Prague such a natural phenomenon is rare.

And a few more words about the only building that received the right to inhabit Streletsky Island. The first stone building was built on the island in 1812. The building was one-story and very solid, as it withstood even the most devastating flood of 1890. In 1935-37, it was expanded and the second floor was added, immortalizing the inscription on the facade, which can be translated as "We and the descendants":

This building is a national monument. A restaurant was opened with him, for which verandas were attached at the very edge of the water. Panoramic windows of the restaurant allow you to see during his visit both the Legia bridge and the island of ofin.

How to get to Streletsky Island

If earlier it was possible to get to Streletsky Island only by rafts or a boat, then since 1841 the crossing has been significantly simplified. First, the banks of the Vltava at the location of the island were connected by a metal bridge, naming it in honor of Franz I. And then in 1901 the construction of a new stone bridge, now known as the Bridge of Legions or Legions, was completed:

The island and the bridge were connected by a grand staircase. It is this staircase that you need to use when you walk along the Legia bridge from the National Theater, or, conversely, from Mala Strana to the embankments of Masaryk and Smetana:

The staircase branches into two sides, not only providing an easy descent, but also creating very beautiful views. So soundly and aesthetically pleasing:

Notice how low the island is. Therefore, during severe floods, he suffers. The last time the island experienced the fate of a submarine was in 2002, completely submerged in a flood abyss.

What is interesting about the island on the Vltava

Streletsky Island has long become a favorite vacation spot for the townspeople. Mass events with fireworks can be held here, but this is rare. Usually people come here to relax, wander the alleys and breathe fresh air, sitting on the grass under the trees:

For the most active in the park, there is a simple rope route (you can see it on the right in the photo). Someone is attracted by a romantic walk:

The island is popular among visitors to Prague for its panoramic views from its shores. Given the proximity of the island to the main attractions, you can walk to its northern tip and perfectly see both, and the complex of the royal baths:

However, going around in a circle, you can alternately see the island of Kampu with the Liechtenstein Palace, then Charles Bridge, then the embankment ... And the overview from this side will end with the view of the National Theater:

On the other side of Streletsky Island, it will not be possible to go around in a circle, since a building blocks the way there. But in this part of the island there are other pluses: you can visit a restaurant or just sit on the benches, soak up the warm sunshine or watch the pleasure boats:

We can say that Streletsky Island is such an oasis of tranquility in the crowded tourist districts of Prague. I have already talked about some where you can relax in the center of Prague. But most of these gardens have created their comfort behind high walls and, being in them, you will not see other attractions. Streletsky Island is good because it itself is in sight, and that, having moved to the island, you can relax, continuing your excursion with a glance. I wish you a comfortable journey, friends!

Your euro-guide Tatiana

Another interesting island, Streletsky, is located near the Uyezd. One gets to it through, which is also known as the Franz Josef Bridge.

Streletsky Island It was first mentioned in the 12th century and was ruled by Czech kings for several centuries. In the 13th century, hops were simply grown on it. Only in the 15th century, Vladislav Jagiellon handed it over to the Old Place, later it was owned by the Shooters' Workshop. The people called him "Strzhelak".

History: training shooting ranges and city holidays.

At first, the shooters were dependent on carriers, and on this basis there were many conflicts. When the shooters built their ship and then the chain bridge, their relationship with those around them did not improve. They fired at the bridge, and the bullets could hit the pedestrians.

And only when the house of the archers was built on the island, the passions subsided a little.
It was at this time that the island became more popular with the townspeople, and it was all the fault of bird shooting, which was carried out by arrows, archers and crossbowmen in the 16th century.
The townspeople enjoyed this spectacle, so they renamed the island from "Little Venice" to "Streletsky". These holidays are described in the novel by Sigmund Winter "Master of Campanus".

After the uprising of the estates, Prague lost many of its privileges, the island was also taken away and divided between the communities, and the use of weapons was prohibited. Despite the fact that the townspeople surrendered their weapons, rifle societies invariably formed on this island. Probably, this influenced the fact that at the end of the 18th century Joseph II again handed over the island to the shooters, who owned it until the first demonstrations of workers in Prague in 1890. The scale of the demonstration was impressive - over 30 thousand people.

Traditions of Streletsky Island today

It can be boring and fun here. On weekdays, the island is not very crowded, there are practically no local residents walking on it, mainly theatergoers and visitors to a cozy restaurant, from which a beautiful view of the National Theater opens, as well as athletes from the Start sports base. The most famous landmark Streletsky Island- an open-air mobile cinema of the Chadik brothers (Joseph and Pavel). Catamarans sail along the Vltava.

On weekends, the Garden Restaurant hosts open-air concerts. At the end of May, on Streletsky Island, the festival of the youth of Prague - Mayoles is held. It has become traditional and annual; students of the city gather for it and celebrate the end of their studies. The King and Queen of Mayoles is elected annually. Once Allen Ginsberg was elected king - a beatnik battle from America, a fighter against imperialism. He made a speech in which he condemned any dictatorship, for which he was accused of nasty and homosexuality and was expelled from the country. And this is not surprising, since it was in 1965 - in the midst of the Cold War. An ordinary Czech guy Frantisk Sedlacek, after becoming the king of Mayoles, was also expelled from the university, but through his own fault.
For a while, Mayoles was not celebrated, but since 1997 the tradition has revived again.

On holidays Streletsky Island festivities are held, and this has its own traditions, as well as military and rifle meetings. In Soviet times, May Day was celebrated there, about which memorable bronze marks were left, and now new rioters hold their rallies here under a mighty and ancient maple tree, with a sign that Charles IV himself planted it.

Legia Bridge leading to Streletsky Island

Streletsky Island is located far from hiking trails, it lies between the two banks of the Vltava. The area of the island is small - about 2.5 hectares. It has the shape of a gabled Indian boat, but over the years its size and shape have changed under the influence of the river flow and the activities of people.

A romantic oasis of comfort and silence in the center of Prague

Streletsky Island (Střelecký ostrov) is located far from hiking trails, it lies between the two banks of the Vltava. The area of the island is small - about 2.5 hectares. It has the shape of a gabled Indian boat, but over the years its size and shape have changed under the influence of the river flow and the activities of people. There was a period when a small branch of the Vltava flowed right through its territory, and the island was called "Little Venice". Even in the 21st century, Streletsky Island managed to survive several severe floods. The last natural disaster overtook him in June 2013 - then the island was completely flooded by the waters of the Vltava.

The park on Streletsky Island is cozy, romantic and beautiful in summer. Alleys turn green, nice benches stand along the banks, colorful flowerbeds bloom everywhere. Stately swans swim right up to the shore, and the walking townspeople feed them with bread crumb. In the summertime, there is an open-air cinema here - the traveling cinema of the Chadikov brothers; music concerts and festivals take place on weekends.

There are no large buildings on the territory of the island - there is only the Střelecký Ostrov restaurant with a bar and a covered terrace, located on the very shore. The windows of the establishment offer a wonderful view of the Vltava embankment and the National Theater. The restaurant presents various culinary trends and national Czech cuisine, there is an excellent wine archive.

Student carnival

At the end of May, young people from Prague come to the island en masse to celebrate the Mayolis student holiday. A vibrant, crowded carnival with dancing, games and performances continues until the morning. The youth costume ball at Strzelak ends with the ceremony of choosing the king and queen of Mayolis.

The history of the island

For the first time this island is mentioned in documents of the XII century. At that time, it belonged to the ruling dynasty; hops were grown on its territory. In the middle of the 15th century, the king granted the island to the Old Town community, later the community gave the land to the Prague archers. Since that time, the historical name "Strzhelaka" has gone, although over the centuries they tried to rename it more than once.

Shooting ranges and festive tournaments were held on Streletsky Island, where the best crossbowmen and archers demonstrated their skills.

During the reign of Ferdinand I, after the estate uprisings, the city was deprived of some of its privileges. Possession of weapons fell under the ban, and with it the right to the island was lost. When the rights to weapons were returned, the archers no longer solely owned this land - part of the territory belonged to the city community. A long-term litigation began, in which the archers, the community and private carriers, who had a commercial interest in delivering people and goods to the island, participated. Sagittarius retained their rights to the territory until the beginning of the last century.

How to get to Streletsky Island today? Above this piece of land, towering in the middle of the Vltava, passes a beautiful one, built at the very beginning of the 20th century. You can get to the island from it by a stone staircase. Now, not everyone can get to Strzhelak. The city authorities are planning to build lifts that would make the island accessible to all categories of citizens. It is planned to create a complete infrastructure for improvement in the park.
