December ended - the last month of the first year after the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The country was just beginning to feel itself in a peaceful life. All-Union radio then penetrated into houses and communal apartments exclusively through the so-called "plates", which can now be seen only in the cinema or in museums. And at the end of 1946, from all these "UFOs" mysterious music streamed into the homes of their owners, and the words sounded just as mysteriously muffled:

In the rustle of a mouse, in the creak of floorboards
Slowly and decorously we descend from the pages,
The caftans rustle, whose laughter is ringing there,
We are all captains. Everyone is famous.
There is no farther in the world, there are no such seas,
Wherever they see our ships
We are full of courage, we despise flattery,
We draw our swords for love and honor ...

This is how a wonderful multi-part radio play for children “Club of famous captains” was broadcast for the first time.

It would seem what kind of performance can attract the attention of the audience if they do not see not only the scenery, but also the performers themselves. Meanwhile, playwrights V. Kreps and K. Minz created just such a performance for the children. At the same time, the authors of the action believed that the visual line could well replace the irrepressible fantasy and imagination of children discovering the world for themselves. And they were not mistaken.

All the amazing plots of the "Club" began and ended in an ordinary, seemingly unremarkable library. Meanwhile, the book depository could seem unremarkable only to its virtual visitors and staff members, which were the young librarian Katyusha and her senior colleague Maria Petrovna, represented in the play by actresses N. Lvova and S. Galperina. As conceived by the authors, both of these keepers of book wealth had no idea what was going on in the institution entrusted to them after they turned off the light and turned the key in the door lock and went home. And what was happening was exactly what was sung in the "captain's" song - the famous heroes of the adventure books loved by the children - Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver, Tartarin from Tarascon, Captain Nemo, Dick Send, Baron Munchausen and others - slowly and decorously left the book pages. In the "rustle of a mouse" these famous members of the captain's club were represented by wonderful artists: B. Lavrov, O. Abdulov, A. Khovansky, V. Sperantova, V. Shakhmatov, R. Plyatt, N. Narokov. The mesmerized young listeners literally clung to their "plates" with their ears, afraid to miss at least one word of their favorite characters naturally visible to them.

Here is how one of the veterans of the State TV and Radio A. I. Akhtyrsky recalls this:

“Then in 1946-1947, I, a ten-year-old boy, had a very clear idea of two librarians (I myself often went to the school library and the children's district library in a nearby alley). Clinging to the radio plate, I imagined how Captain Nemo and his friends descended through the covers of books from the illustrations drawn in them, how they materialize as living people in costumes of their time and how they sit at the table. All this was so natural and real that I never doubted for a second that this was possible. Could this be? This question was not at all - I was only 10 years old. "

It seems that many of the boys and girls of that time, including the author of these lines, could subscribe to these words of Alexander Ivanovich today.

Well, where did the famous captains call their young admirers? Of course, on long voyages, where amazing adventures take place. Where Justice, Friendship, Loyalty and Honor inevitably win. The revived literary heroes confidentially informed the cabin boys listening to them about great travelers, about the history of geographical discoveries, wonderful natural phenomena and the latest achievements of science ...

With the help of their famous mentors, enchanted listeners discovered an amazing immense world and each of them, without hesitation, was ready to stand next to their idols under their sails.

Meanwhile, the hour inevitably came when in the twilight of the library the sound of the old clock was ringing, and outside the library a rooster crowed, reminding the captains that they must return to the pages of the abandoned books. Before doing this, the childish idols invariably sang their farewell song, listening to which the guys in no way doubted that, saying goodbye to each other until the next meeting, the famous captains extend a hand of friendship not only to each other, but also to each of them - personally. So it actually was.

“Outside the window, the cock crowed again,
The hemp wick shuddered and went out.
The morning mist waves a blue flag.
Goodbye, your hand, captain! "

It was ... It was long ago - until the end of the 70s, until the talented pilots of captains V. Kreps and K. Minz left our mortal world.

P.S. It would be unfair not to mention here the names of those who, apart from the authors of the "captain's series", were behind the scenes of the serial radio play. This is a large creative team in the main editorial office of radio broadcasting for children. At various times the editors of the play were T. Krasina, A. Dietrich, T. Sedykh ... Directed by R. Ioffe, N. Alexandrovich, T. Sapozhnikova and others.

As for the radio play itself, having ceased to exist on the air, it continued its life in the multivolume edition “The Club of Famous Captains”. The annotation to the first volume says: "Happy voyage, famous captains." Here the captains, alas, do not leave the pages, but they are still ready to lend a hand of friendship to everyone who is ready to answer their handshake. Judging by some of the interviews of readers on the Internet, our heroes have not lost their enthusiastic admirers. And this gives me hope that everything is not so bad.
