Fun for children in Vienna. Holidays in Vienna with children, where to go, where to eat! Go behind the scenes of the Vienna Opera

If it is not about beach vacation, but about walking around the city, Vienna is the perfect city to try your hand at. Of course, you shouldn't do like us and come here in winter. The city is very strong wind and frequent rains. It is best to travel to Vienna in late spring or early autumn.

In winter, Vienna is cold, the wind blows and the snow falls. However, the city remains very beautiful and convenient for traveling with children.

And here are the reasons why this trip will be easy and enjoyable, even for those who are afraid to take babies on board (and even for those who, after all, will not be afraid of the cold and will come to Vienna in winter):

What to do for yourself and your children in Vienna if you have arrived for a few days?

  1. On a clear day, hike Leopoldsberg by bus for great views and walk down one of the trails. If you are planning this trip with a small child, do not take a stroller uphill, it will be more convenient to carry the baby in a backpack.

  2. Visit the Vienna Opera for just € 3. It is not worth going to the opera very young, but if the child is already 8-10 years old and is fond of music, the queue for tickets will become a separate adventure for him. You need to come 1.5 hours before the start of the show, and buy tickets at the box office with the sign "Standing zone" (to the left of the main entrance). The queue goes very quickly, there are enough tickets for everyone. If you stand the first act, in the second you will sit in comfortable places, as many do not stand the long performance. You will kill two birds with one stone: see the interior of the opera and a good performance.

Vienna Opera, 15 minutes before the start of the operetta "The Bat".

  3. Walk to museums in bad weather. Vienna has many beautiful art galleries, where children are always welcome (Albertina, Leopold, Mumok and others).

In the Albertina art gallery there are impressionists, post-impressionists and a very comfortable changing room. Of course, there are also lifts.

In some museums, kids are even allowed to run - for example, in the Jewish Museum.

Vienna Technical Museum - real paradise for children of all ages and parents who are passionate about technology. Here you can push buttons to your heart's content, study physics, jump in the children's room and ride miniature electric cars.

Parking for strollers at the Technical Museum. Any floor can be reached by elevator along with a stroller. The parking lot is equipped for those who do not want to use the stroller in the museum.

Earring in a technical museum and looked, and touched, and pressed the buttons.

  4. Walk around the grounds of the Vienna University of Economics This new complex striking buildings built by Zaha Hadid Architects. It is interesting to run here, take pictures against the background of various unusual walls, and there is a magnificent playground nearby. You can eat at the Mensa student canteen (closed during student holidays).

And next to it is another playground.

  5. V good weather see the Wagner Villas and take a walk in the Vienna Woods, which starts right behind the villas.

Wagner's Villa. The forest begins right behind it.

This is how the forest looks in winter.

It is more convenient to walk in the mountains and through the forest with a backpack, without a stroller.

  6. The old building of the University of Vienna is one of the main attractions of the city. Go inside and wander the corridors. Buy great coffee beans from the vending machine - for only 1 euro (this is perhaps the cheapest and tasty coffee in the town). Near the university - beautiful park and a playground.
  7. Walk through the Vienna Cemetery In the warm season, it is very green and beautiful there. Perfect place for walking with a stroller. In the cemetery you will find the graves of almost all famous composers - Brahms, Strauss, Beethoven - all are buried here.
  8. Just take a walk around the city, look at the Gothic cathedrals, see the fountains and admire the architecture, see the buildings of the Hundertwasser.

The houses built by Hundertwasser look like playgrounds. Children are happy to play hide-and-seek and catch-up in the yards.

  9. If a child's feet can reach the pedals of an adult bike, register at one of the city bike stands (registration costs 1 euro) and ride around the city (the first hour is free).
  10. Spend a rainy day at the House of Music. It is wonderful interactive museum, the time in which flies unnoticed.

We are going to Vienna for autumn vacation with children 7 and 12 years old. I read ALL the reviews and yours turned out to be the most informative for children. A few more clarifying questions. Where would you advise to eat with a child and, if the names of the main dishes in German do not complicate, I will just show them in a restaurant, because. I don’t know the language at all. About the excursion, in principle, I understood everything, but if you add anything else or advise I will be grateful.

I highly recommend taking children to the zoo for an "attraction" called "Weighing and feeding koalas." The attendant enters the pavilion and, in the process of feeding and weighing, "communicates" with the animals ... The employee on this side of the glass comments, however, in German, which, as I understand it, is not very convenient for you. But, in principle, everything will be clear anyway. Not only our 13-year-old son, but my husband and I enjoyed it a lot.
The announcement of the start time of feeding was in the pavilion. So we walked again and returned to the indicated hour.
By the way, the presence of such "pavilions" (I still remember crocodiles and pandas, for example) and "galleries for visitors", from where you can watch animals (say, tigers), allows you to "warm up" if suddenly the weather is "unlucky".
It seems that visitors are also allowed to some of the animals. We saw children in the pen of domestic goats, for example.
Good luck!

“Weighing and feeding koalas” is superb !! Note also that this is part of the daily program - at the entrance they give out a program in which there is a schedule for the whole day - from what I remember chronologically (feeding elephants, feeding and performing with seals / lions, feeding koalas, etc.) - that is, in during the day, the masses with the kids swim from place to place. Everything is done very well

Natali_ thank you very much, very useful link. I will print it in the restaurant too, at least somehow I will be guided.
Unfortunately, I have basic English. But my children study in a German school, so let's check their knowledge.
Is there any amusement park in Vienna?
We also have a trip to Salzburg and Graz according to the tour program. Have you been there?

We also saw the feeding of the hippos. And the remains of the tigers' meal. (Close to the glass. And I will not say that it is very appetizing ... The menu could be "identified" in the traditional way, used when buying a rabbit carcass on the market.)
We traveled to Austria on our own. Review here

We did not visit the amusement park in Vienna. On Salzburg, it seemed to us that one day is not enough, we did not even have time to see what we had planned.

Just in case - a link to a cheat sheet for Austria - if you haven't seen it yet (+ see Talyusha's additions during the discussion):

Any pub will serve broth with crackers and schnitzel with potatoes. Spinogryses eat flawlessly. Pork knuckle, tongue salad, beef soup went well with us. There are many Italian, Japanese and other cafes. I speak German myself at the level of 3 grades of school, but I always found English translation in the menu or was somehow determined. There are no problems. And already fast-feet (snack), especially in the center, is full. It was such that ham, bread and milk were bought and the child was fed in the room "from hand".

What you MUST visit?
And it depends on the children. Basically, I have listed almost everything for children. You can sit with them in a pub (I drank beer, played darts, shouted songs), the child was actively involved.

Polina, your topic should be renamed so that any reader can understand from the title that we are talking about a vacation with children in Vienna. Otherwise, the information collected here will "go to the sand" for future travelers. If you have no objection, write to the moderator yourself.

What you MUST visit?

Unfortunately, it is not clear from your question: 1) how much free time you will have; 2) who are you (boys / girls?), What is interesting to them; 3) finally, how much you are focused on the "children's" only program; do you have any special interests as adults? Look at the museums here, maybe you can pick something up:
http://www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArticle=10137&sub="E:%20Die%20Wien-Karte "
Not only this page is interesting - with museums. Weight is different useful information.
The Russian version, as often happens, is poorer. Sometimes the translation is "not very". But for someone - and this is "bread"; especially if paper guides are a problem.

Quote:
Well, do not hesitate, ask for the menu in English. In restaurants in Vienna, we specially asked for English for our son, so that he would choose his own food - he would practice (he only has English language). Not the fact that it will be available, but "they don't take money for demand" ...

Quote:
I understand that this is a joke. But still ... I wouldn't pedal too much. Austrian German is ...

Natali_ I've posted our program, see if you can tell me something. Children 7 and 12 years old (girls, study at a music school, that's why they chose Vienna). Personally, I will be interested in everything that is interesting for children. We are the first time we are going to Europe (Bulgaria does not count), before that we were with children in Bulgaria, Egypt, Turkey and China (an unforgettable trip). So we looked at the East in all its glory, now Europe.

Sightseeing tour of the very center of the capital: St. Stephen's Cathedral - Stephansdom, the main streets of the capital Graben and Kertner, a visit to the Vienna Opera House.
Monday day
Sightseeing tour of the historical sights of Vienna: Schoenbrunn and Belvedere castles, Hofburg Palace, Ringstrasse, Parliament, Burgtheater, University, Votivkirche cathedral, Prater Ferris wheel.

Tuesday
Guided tour of the Vienna Woods. You will see the southern and most beautiful part Vienna Woods... After visiting the town of Baden near Vienna, the excursion continues through the Helenental Valley, to the Maerling Castle, which is famous for tragic death the heir to the throne, Prince Rudolph, and his beloved Baroness Maria Wetsera. The excursion ends with a visit to the Heiligenkreuz monastery, as well as a wine tasting in a small village near Baden.

Thursday
Visit to Salzburg. Moving by railway. A sightseeing tour will introduce you to the most interesting historical sites cities such as the house where Mozart was born, Mirabell Park, Cathedral Square.

Friday
Visit to the city of Graz, the capital of Styria, with a population of 250 thousand people. It is the second largest city in Austria. The ancient gates of the city, which are one of the oldest in Europe, were recognized as the world cultural heritage UNESCO in 1999. You will be amazed by the view of the clock tower, which is called " precious stone in the crown of the city ”, and with which you can take in the entire 850-year history of Graz, a city famous for its collection of courtyards with arcades, spiral staircases, churches, Mediterranean scenes in squares - this is a whole world of impressions that will make you return here again.

1) Polina, for a start, I would find out which company will act as the "host" for you, and from this point of view I looked through the reviews on this site. It is important to know about the possible "jambs" of the tour, so that if not correct, then at least somehow smooth them out, or, at least, prepare mentally. So, judging by the program, excursions on Monday promise to be well sooo much "sightseeing". In addition, you must agree that it will be a shame to come to Salzburg (see the travel time "there + back", for example, here https://www.otzyv.ru/read.php?let=13658... and not get into the fortress. Especially if your children have never seen castles in Europe before. One gets the impression that this is exactly the case in your tour.

2) As a consequence, we need some "backup" options, well, at least in Vienna itself. It is better to prepare them at home, so that at any moment you could “break away” from the group and go where you “need” or want to. There can be any reasons - the guide did not like it, the proposal for the route is not designed for a children's audience, the weather has deteriorated (not summer, however), the child is tired and naughty (the program includes everything sightseeing tours on foot), but you never know what ... No need to be afraid, Vienna is "simple" enough for a tourist and quite a civilized city, you will not be lost even without knowing German. And for self-confidence - study the map at home, determine where the hotel is located, where are the museums and attractions you are interested in, how to get there, etc.

4) Shopping. Give your princesses the opportunity to buy Christmas tree decorations in Vienna. And a souvenir for memory, and a lot of pleasure from the process ...

Natali_ thank you very much! If all travel managers treated their tourists as you do, I think people would travel more for sightseeing purposes, and not just beach vacations (I draw this conclusion from my acquaintances, wealthy and not so). Even my husband is somehow skeptical related to our trip and kept suggesting that we change plans for beach countries. Still, people are more afraid of wasting money on Europe than on the beach.
Even taking Disneyland (we really want to get there), but VERY many of my friends went and spat on me. And, of course (with the best of intentions) they dissuade me. But I answer, you were there, and we were not!

Quote:
Well, I have nothing to do with the tourist business ... I just read this resource for a couple of years before traveling (we travel on our own, well, they do not suit us organized tours), I found a lot of useful information. So why not help someone else in turn?

Quote:
There would be something to spend ...
Internet + a certain amount of desire and free time = and "wasted" will definitely not work. Regardless of how this or that person understands what is "wasted". (Someone "Munich without beer - money down the drain", someone "Vienna without an opera - the trip failed" ...)

Write a review when you return. Good luck!

If it is already open (starts 6 weeks before Christmas) and the weather is not very nasty, be sure to visit (in the evening, it’s more spectacular) the Christmas market near the Rathause. For completeness, buy a caramel apple for the children, and a mug of mulled wine for yourself)). In Vienna, the chain of fish restaurants Nord See
Very fast, tasty, you can sit down at a table to eat, you can take with you
There is a very sincere Russian restaurant near your hotel in a side street (I think Vladimir is called. Russian and Austrian cuisine.

Appolosha, "you are confused in the testimony."
Quote:

I want to add to the account of what is called fast food
In Vienna, the chain of fish restaurants Nord See
"Little restaurant" is really a strong saying. Assortment for the "seven-year plan"? I don't know ... Well, let's say baked salmon with boiled potatoes - if a child eats fish, for many mothers this is a problem. However, maybe you, on the contrary, are lovers of seafood ... The advantage is that you can go in, look at the food, if you didn’t like it, you could leave. One of them is located on Mariahilferstrasse - at the exit closest to the historical center from the Neubaugasse metro station (line U3), in the summer there was a Russian-speaking woman working at the distribution. Ordering "on the fingers", again, is easier.

Vienna has a lot of surprises for its little guests!

Children's MuseumZOOM…. and all the senses wake up!

"Hands up, the mind is the" motor ", the feelings are" let's go "!" V children's museum ZUUM, are only welcome when children ask the most tricky questions, try to touch the unknown and play with their curiosity. In ZUUM, children learn about the world through their senses? - Yes, through our own or collective, breaking up into small teams. In their purely individual knowledge of things, they focus their attention on specific objects, situations, while comprehending themselves, revealing various skills and abilities. In the ZUUM exposition and in its "workshops", children acquire knowledge through sensory perception and experience based on impressions. So, designed entirely for the form of play, the process of learning and development of the child is being built. Unlike museums for adults, ZUUM invites children to touch the exhibits, feel them, and thus, quite tangibly, i.e. tactile, take over the world. Play here is the primary and meaningful action, allowing children to comprehend this huge and interesting world in a relaxed and attractive manner.

Children inSchoenbrunn

Here you can learn about the environment in which the imperial children lived, their way of life and daily activities. The wheel of world history will explain to you the difference between the crowned offspring and his peers from other social classes.

Your children will be able to play with toys from the times of kings and queens, learn the peculiarities of the manner of expressing themselves in the court language, even learn how to set the table for a high society reception. During lessons with a guide, your child learns a lot interesting facts, for example, what sorts of dishes were used for the imperial table, or the history of the palace itself, how old it is and has it always been so magnificent.

And the culmination of this educational event will be dressing up as real blond princes and charming little princesses.

Various tourist programs, balls (parties) and birthday celebrations in the best royal traditions are also offered to your attention. To do this, you only need to first coordinate this with our administration.

Vienna Prater

Around 250 attractions will entertain you in the Vienna Prater, from standard slot machines to racing circuits, from ball throwing and hunting booths, exciting roller coasters and stealth trains to various flying machines.

Children will be especially delighted to ride all kinds of carousels, old cave trains, watch performances with the Viennese "Petrushka" and take part in the Judy show. And this is far from full list entertainment that awaits you in the Prater.

In addition to varied entertainment program here you will find more than 60 cafes, restaurants, ice cream buffets and eateries for the most discerning palates. The inhabitants of Vienna call this place "Varstelprater" (which literally means the Shutovsky Prater, an analogue of an old-fashioned amusement park, "cracker").

Polytechnical Museum

On an area of 22 thousand square meters, the Polytechnic Museum offers a wide range of opportunities to enter the captivating world of high technology. Unique exhibits of the past and familiar techniques of the present will present you as an exciting exploration and showcase a bizarre technological evolution.

Schmetterlingshaus

Schmetterlingshaus is a tropical butterfly house located in the center of Vienna. Anyone will not remain indifferent to hundreds of living and free-flying colorful butterflies in the exotic space of their natural environment - the tropics. This magical museum is located in the heart of Vienna, just 200 meters from the famous Vienna Opera. The butterfly house itself is inside the world-famous Jugendstil greenhouse (the Austrian version of the Art Nouveau style). Attracts tourists and the fact that this house used to be a part of royal palace Hofburg, being the personal property of Kaiser Frans Joseph and Sisi. Walking around this unusual house, passing under murmuring waterfalls, past hollow trees with butterflies living inside, under their fluttering wings, you will feel the existence of an earthly paradise. Welcome to Schmetterlingshaus!

HausdesMeeres

More than 3500 animals are represented on the territory of 2500 square meters. In the terrarium section, you will see crocodiles, venomous snakes, boas and lizards. The main spectacle of the tropical marine fauna is the huge reservoirs with sharks, water turtles, different kinds corals, and colorful fish. The center of the sea is the piranha aquarium. The effect of being in the incredible space of the tropics with free-flying birds and restless monkeys running freely is created. The Mediterranean Pavilion overlooks all life forms of this ocean, from single-celled plants to snakes, shells, crabs, sea urchins and starfish.

Prater Museum

Only the Prathermuseum in the planetarium can be as unusual as the Prater. In this extraordinary museum, you will learn impressive facts and a vivid insight into the history of the evolution of the Viennese "entertainment industry". This is such a bizarre and at the same time chilling sight that it is simply impossible to leave without leaving a few gray hairs.

Here, crazy fun coexists with Childegorold melancholy. An amazingly sharp contrast, a mix of strikingly incompatible things that defies the standard exhibition logic, is presented in the form, for example, of a plastic doll named Max - the legendary ventriloquist, the prototype of modern International Marriage Agencies, who will predict your future with the ease of a coffee machine. the miracle machine inspired Helmut Quoltinger himself!). One of the frightening attractions is a dragon crawling out of a cave, making your limbs chill. One of the original exhibits is a huge panorama of the Vienna International Exhibition 1873, demonstrating the vain desire of the city to appear in the best light and at the same time the painful failure of this venture - the audience did not come because of the threat of a cholera epidemic hanging over the city. This "Vienna Kunstkamera" will surprise you with very non-standard gizmos, such as midget shoes, a giant's costume and the sensational show "Disembodied Lady" - all these relics of the perverted fun of the late 19th century will also be enjoyed by the modern public. The Viennese strongmen are also featured in the show.

TreasuryDieSchatzkammer

This family treasury of the Habsburgs has a huge number of unique exhibits. Among them are the posthumous pectoral cross of the Austrian king Louis the Great, a baptismal and home altar made of amber, a cancer with a nail from the Crucifixion and much more.

House of Music

Haus der Musik is an interactive learning museum. Nestled between the Cathedral of St. Stefan and the Vienna State Opera, it is located in the heart of Vienna's first historic district. A hospitable "guide" through numerous cognitive exhibits and interactive installations will cheerfully and meaningfully explain to you the principles of musical harmony, and, inspiring with symphonic masterpieces, will make the world of music accessible to you.

01. This is school! There is a large bicycle parking near the school entrance.

02. There is also a place where parents can wait for their children.

03. The school building was designed by the Portuguese architectural bureau ZT Arquitectos LDA. The entire complex covers an area of 4.8 hectares. 34 million euros were invested in its construction.

Photo from the site gpl.at

04. To be precise, this is not only a school. The building houses 11 kindergarten groups, 17 classes primary school and 8 correctional classes for children with special needs and disabilities.

Photo from the site gpl.at

05. The school building has classrooms and common areas such as media center, library, dining room, sports and gym.

06. On the street there is a large playground for recreation and games. On top of everything else, there is play equipment for disabled children.

Photo from the site gpl.at

07. The back yard is fenced! There is everything for games - from playgrounds to climbing walls and sports equipment.

08. Everything is done so that children of different ages can play together.

09. Luxurious venues for every taste.

10. And this is a kindergarten.

11. Kindergartens are built on the first floors, they are usually designed for small groups, so that each child is given maximum attention.

12. It's right in a residential building on the first floor. The garden has a small area.

13. Another kindergarten

14. In Austria, sandpits and play areas often have sun and rain shelters. Also, pay attention to the site itself and the sandbox. Everything here is aimed at the development of the child. Often they make such things with water so that children can build canals, sculpt castles, etc.

15. And this is such a kids club in the yard.

16. A small room that can be used all year round.

17. The houses on the ground floors have stroller parking.

18. Another sandbox.

19. See these wooden tables? There are taps where water flows from. Actually, it flows from the tables onto the sand, and the children are digging canals here, etc. Like this: you can just add water to the sandbox and it will be cool right away! A simple and beautiful solution.

20. Here are more playgrounds in the yards. In Austria, they do not build bright clown towns like ours. Here, the sites are as close to nature as possible, natural materials and colors are used.

21. Swing

22. Another version of the swing. Please note that the lawn is reinforced under the swing so that it is not trampled or muddy. We do not know about this.

23. Or such a thing. We would probably have considered it too dangerous.

24. Or lo! They just made a hut.

25. Look how cool!

26. Large areas are made far from residential buildings so that noise does not interfere with residents. There are usually small groups near houses, swings, sandpits for the smallest.

27. Here's another yard for the children.

28. Swing

29. Different types of coatings are used everywhere. Playgrounds in Vienna have common features, but you won't find two the same.

30.

31. The relief is used to the maximum, the playground should educate and develop the child.

32.

33. There are usually benches for parents near the playground.

34. But look what a steep obstacle course!

35. Even adults cannot resist not to pass it.

36.

37. We would consider it as not complying with the standards)

38. Large platforms are installed in parks or in squares far from the windows of houses.

39. It's near the school

40. A whole forest was built here

41. While you are dreaming of playing on the Austrian playground, let me remind you that this is possible with us. Only important.

42.

43. Sometimes playgrounds resemble art installations

44.

45. Very cool: children can climb into this "stupa" by a rope ladder, crawl through the porthole and slide down the pole like firemen.

46.

47.

48. How do you like it?

49. And this is the training camp of the "Right Sector" fighters!
