Burj Khalifa is the tallest skyscraper. Burj Khalifa project and construction of the tallest building in the world

Burj Khalifa at sunset

The construction of the skyscraper took place from 2004 to 2010. The UAE Prime Minister, who was conducting the official opening, decided to dedicate the building to the President of the state, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan. Therefore, the original name of the Burj Dubai structure was changed to Burj Khalifa, which translates as the Khalifa Tower.

The building was designed by the American Bureau Skidmore. Its author is Adrian Smith, who previously participated in the creation of the Chinese skyscraper Jin Mao. The general contractor was Samsung from South Korea.

According to the plans of the customers and architects, the tower was to become the tallest building in the world, so its design height was kept secret and changed several times in connection with the opening of other similar objects.

The construction of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper proceeded at a record pace - 1-2 floors a week. About 12,000 workers were involved in the work every day. The total cost of the facility exceeded US $ 4 billion.

Features of the architecture

The height of the Burj Khalifa, declared at the time of opening, was 828 m (163 floors), although, according to rumors, the plans of the developers included 940 m. Externally, the building resembles a giant stalagmite with a spire directed upwards. Asymmetry of lines is not only an architect's idea, but also a technical move designed to reduce the impact on the construction of winds.

Another feature of the skyscraper is the lack of anchorage in rocky ground. Hanging piles (two hundred units) 45 m long and 1.5 m wide were used to create the foundation. During the construction of the building, a special type of concrete was developed that has the ability to withstand high temperatures and loads.

Internal layout

In addition to technical floors and a parking lot for 3000 cars, the Burj Khalifa skyscraper houses: a hotel with 304 rooms (from 1st to 39th floor), which was designed by Armani himself; office premises (111-121, 125-135 and 139-154 floors); 900 apartments (44-72 and 77-108 floors); shopping centers, shops, observation decks, cafes, nightclubs, swimming pools, observatory, mosque and so on. For convenience, the building is equipped with three independent entrances.

Floor 100 is wholly owned by billionaire Shetty from India and has three apartments, each with an average area of 500 sqm. The last tiers are reserved for telecommunications equipment.

The 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa is occupied by the Atmosphere restaurant, which can accommodate up to 80 visitors. It is considered to be the highest located on the planet.

The 148th floor contains the highest (555 m) observation deck in the world. In order to get there and enjoy the panorama of the city, you need to purchase a ticket (the cost for an adult is 125 AED).

There is an artificial lake with a unique fountain in front of the skyscraper. The area of the reservoir is 12 hectares. More than 6,000 light sources are used to illuminate the fountain, including colored spotlights, and its jets rise 150 m in height. All this is accompanied by national and world musical works.

The technical equipment of the Khalifa Tower meets all modern standards and even surpasses them.

When glazing the building, special panels (26,000 pieces) were used that can reflect the sun's rays, keep out dust and prevent heating of the interior.

Air conditioning is carried out according to a special scheme: air is driven from bottom to top along the entire height of the structure, while underground cooling modules and sea water are used. As a result, the internal temperature is kept at +18 ° C. Along with ventilation, the air is aromatized using membranes in the air conditioning system and an exclusive perfume created for the Burj Khalifa.

Inside the elevator

A skyscraper is an energetically independent object. Complete self-sufficiency in electricity is achieved through the operation of solar panels on the walls of the tower and a 61-meter turbine that rotates thanks to the wind.

57 elevators installed in the tower operate at a speed of 10 m / s. But only one of them, the service one, runs along the entire height of the building, so residents and visitors have to make transfers.

Hall

Despite the impressive dimensions of the Burj Khalifa, in case of danger, all people can be evacuated from it in just 32 minutes.

Burj Khalifa is a futuristic skyscraper that combines state-of-the-art technology with unprecedented luxury. This building, which is a record holder in many respects, is a must-see for everyone who comes to Dubai, because from its windows you can see the whole city from a bird's eye view.

Construction of Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa, formerly known as Burj Dubai, is located in downtown Dubai, UAE, and is 829.84 meters high. It is the tallest man-made structure in the world. Burj Khalifa is a stunning piece of art and an incomparable feat of technology.

Burj Khalifa is part of a new development called Downtown Dubai. It is located on Sheikh Zayed Road, in close proximity to Dubai's main business district. The tower was designed by Emaar Properties and built by Skidmore and Owings & Merrill. South Korea-based Samsung C&T, which also built Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Towers, was the main contractor for this project. The Belgian Besix group and the UAE-based Arabtec were the main subcontractors.

Construction of the project began on September 21, 2004. The $ 1.5 billion tower has been renamed Burj Khalifa, in honor of the decisive backing of UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Burj Khalifa tower excavation began in January 2004, and within 1,325 days of excavation, Burj Khalifa became the tallest structure in the world.

More than 45,000 cubic meters of concrete weighing over 110,000 tons were used to build the foundation, which has 192 piles buried to a depth of more than 50 meters. The construction of Burj Khalifa required over 22 million man-hours, 380 skilled engineers, over 330,000 cubic meters of concrete and 39,000 tons of steel reinforcement.

The construction of Burj Khalifa was carried out using special mixes of concrete in order to ensure that the building could withstand extreme loads. The consistency of the concrete used in the project was a very important aspect, since one could not forget about the high temperatures that are observed in the UAE in the summer, when the thermometer sometimes creeps up to 50 ° C. Therefore, the concrete could not be poured during the day - you had to wait for the night. when the air became cooler and the humidity became slightly higher.

You are probably asking why we then said at the beginning of the article that the tower has the highest observation deck? The fact is that there really is such a platform in the Burj Khalifa. It was opened relatively recently on the 148th floor. The height of this site is 555 meters, which makes it the highest in the world.

The observation deck of the Burj Khalifa tower has a telescope, complemented by a special device that allows visitors not only to look at the surrounding landscape in real time, but also to view previously saved images.

Dubai is famous all over the world for its unique structure, which resembles a real stalagmite. This is the Burj Khalifa skyscraper. The height of the building is simply amazing, it is equal to 828 meters, and it consists of 163 floors. Climbing to its top, you can see any point of the Arab metropolis and delight the eyes of tourists who have come here from all over the world.

Construction history

The architects who were developing the project of this structure, from the very beginning, planned what they would create under the name "Burj Khalifa". The height of this skyscraper and the number of its floors were kept in the strictest confidence until the very end of construction. According to the idea of the Sheikh of Dubai, this tower was to become a symbol of a new, newly built area, and attract tourists from all over the planet.

The construction of this structure began in 2004. More than 12 thousand workers came to work every day to erect the building, building two floors a week. The height of the Burj Khalifa tower exceeds many skyscrapers by several hundred meters, the structure itself has no analogues in the whole world, an asymmetric shape was invented for its construction. It is thanks to this idea of the architects that this structure can withstand strong winds.

The United Arab Emirates is known for its high temperatures and the scorching rays of the sun, so a special type of concrete was created for the construction of the tower, which can withstand heat up to +50 degrees Celsius. It is also not hot inside the building, as it is completely glazed with unique materials that do not let the sun's rays through and repel all dust. Despite this, the windows of the tower are washed every day. The skyscraper is even endowed with its own scent, which is created by special membranes.

The construction was completed in 2010, and the grand opening of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper took place. The height of this Arab landmark instantly made the building famous throughout the world. According to the Sheikh of Dubai, the tower was named in honor of their president, the Khalifa.

Description

Many people say about this skyscraper that it is an independent city in the very center of the metropolis. It has its own electrical and air conditioning systems. Electricity is supplied to the building by a large array of solar panels, and a comfortable temperature is maintained using seawater and underground cooling modules. Therefore, the air inside this structure will not warm up above +18 degrees Celsius, which is undoubtedly very important for the hot climate of the UAE.

Near the building itself there is a beautiful, unique singing fountain, the creation of which was spent about $ 217 million. He can throw his jets to a height of over 150 meters.

What's inside?

The height of the Burj Khalifa building is quite impressive, so it could accommodate many hotels, offices, apartments and shopping centers... For them, the building has three separate entrances: one is intended for guests of hotel complexes, the other is for office employees, and the third is for those living in the apartments.

From the 1st to the 39th floor, a hotel is located in the skyscraper, where the interior was designed by the famous designer and fashion designer after whom it was named (Armani). For lovers of an active lifestyle, the building designers have built sport complexes with swimming pools, located on the 43rd and 76th floors. And from 44th to 72nd and from 77th to 108th there are nine hundred luxurious apartments. Lives on the hundredth floor Indian billionaire, who bought it completely under his own ownership.

Office premises are located from 111th to 154th floors. The "Atmosphere" establishment is located on the 122nd floor of the "Burj Khalifa" building, the height of its location allows us to say that it is the highest-located restaurant in the world. The number of seats in it is designed for eighty people.

The observation deck is considered the most popular site of the Burj Khalifa (124th floor). Its height is 472 meters.

Excursion to the top

A panoramic platform called At the Top, which means "at the top", was opened to its first guests back in 2008. Many tourists say that if they have not been to this observatory, then they have not been to Dubai.

Many people come here to specially visit observation deck the Burj Khalifa building. Photos from above are amazing: you can take pictures of the incomparable view or the desert of the Arabian Peninsula. One gets the impression that they were made on board of some kind of aircraft. There are also many telescopes in this place, their power allows you to see the entire metropolis closer. Bird's-eye view open beautiful panoramas on the Sheikh Zayed highway and the entire surrounding area. Undoubtedly, visiting this observation deck, you will look at Dubai with completely different eyes.

The duration of this excursion is one hour, but this is quite enough to enjoy all the beautiful views and landscapes.

How do I purchase a Tower Pass?

Tickets can be bought at the box office of the skyscraper, located on the first level, but for this you have to stand in a long queue. To avoid this, it is better to purchase them on the Burj Khalifa website. It is also possible to order them from travel agencies, but it will cost 25 dirhams more.

The cost of entering the tower varies depending on the date of purchase of the ticket and on the age. Thus, an urgent pass will cost AED 400 for both children and adults. Regular ticket prices range from AED 95 to AED 125. It would also be appropriate to purchase a special telescope card worth 25 dirhams. In the event that a whole group of friends or family is going on such an excursion, then one such card will be enough for them, you do not need to take it for each person.

Very important point... Burj Khalifa has two observation decks. This is important, since ticket prices differ at times, and Prime hours (the best hours to visit) are different.

AT THE TOP- these are observation decks on 124 (open) and 125 (covered) floors, the height is 452 meters.

- this is an observation deck on the 148th floor (open), height - 555 meters.

To understand why this is so, we will plunge a little into the history of the Burj Khalifa, although we will tell the whole story in facts and figures in the second part of this article. At first, there was no upper observation deck at all, there was enough of a platform on the 124th floor (452 meters), which was the highest in the world.

However, in December 2011 (a year after the opening of Burj Khalifa), the Canton Tower opened in Guangzhou (China) with an observation deck at an altitude of 488 meters, and the Dubai people were left without a record.

On October 15, 2014, Dubai won its record by opening an area on the 148th floor (555 meters). But already in June 2016, an observation deck at the Shanghai Tower (China) at an altitude of 561 meters opened, and Dubai again lost their record.

Now Dubai has nothing to “cover” with. Recall that the Burj Khalifa building is only 585 meters high, and the remaining 243 meters is a large metal spire, in which, according to all safety standards, an observation deck cannot be organized.

Opening hours

7 days a week, from 8-30 to 22-00. The entrance closes at 21-15.

Prime hours for AT THE TOP sites are from 15-00 to 18-30.

Prime hours for the AT THE TOP SKY platform are from 9-30 to 18-00.

Prime hours are subject to change by administration.

Ticket price

There are two types of tickets - Immediate Entry Admission and General Admission. Children under 4 years old are always free. Further, all prices are given in dirhams, see the current rate in our article "".

Immediate Entry Admission... This ticket is bought at the box office on the day of the visit. It would seem the easiest and most convenient option.

In practice, this is the worst case scenario. Firstly, this type of ticket is sold only on AT THE TOP, and on AT THE TOP SKY they are not available at all.

Secondly, tickets may simply not be available, because a limited number of people are allowed on the observation deck.

Thirdly, a very high price of 315 dirhams, compared to 210 and 135 dirhams for a ticket purchased on the site. Below is a table of prices for Immediate Entry tickets.

General Admission... This ticket is purchased from the official website https://tickets.atthetop.ae/. When buying a ticket, you need to choose the date and time of your visit. Below is a table of prices for General Admission tickets.

General Admission tickets are available online one month before the date of your visit. Payment is made by VISA, MasterCard and JCB cards. There is an additional charge of AED 5 for the purchase of a ticket online. That is, add 5 to the prices in the table above.

And one more important point. You cannot buy a separate child ticket, only together with at least one adult, the system does not allow you to do this. If you are traveling with a child, buy all tickets at once in one operation. Do not forget about the children's ticket, otherwise you will not be able to buy it later in a separate operation.

Probably, Burj Khalifa can be safely given another record - for the most expensive tickets to the observation decks. For comparison, to look at Shanghai from the currently record-breaking observation deck of the Shanghai Tower costs 180 (at the time of this writing, $ 27).

Special offers

When buying on the site, you can use combo tickets, some are very profitable.

AT THE TOP SKY + Dubai Fountain Boardwalk... Together, buy a ticket to the AT THE TOP SKY site and watch the show from a special platform at the foot of the Burj Khalifa (in the photo below, click to enlarge). Valid from 19-00, price - 360 (+5) dirhams.

A ticket to AT THE TOP SKY costs 350 (+5) dirhams, and viewing the fountains from the platform can be purchased separately for 20 (+5) dirhams. This results in a saving of 15 dirhams.

ATT + Dubai Aquarium... This profitable proposition... Get tickets for AT THE TOP (not in Prime hours) and at. Price - 180 (+5) dirhams.

A ticket to Burj Khalifa costs 125 (+5) dirhams, a ticket to the aquarium costs 100 dirhams. This results in a saving of 45 dirhams.

FAST TRACK... This ticket allows you to go everywhere without queuing. Price - 300 (+5) dirhams, regardless of age. This ticket can only be used to enter the AT THE TOP sites; this type of ticket is not available for the AT THE TOP SKY site. If you see that someone is skipping the line, do not be surprised or indignant, he bought himself a FAST TRACK ticket.

There are several more combo tickets, but we will not talk about them in detail now, as we consider them not very popular. If you are interested, you can read their description on tickets.atthetop.ae. If you do not know English, use the translator built into the browser, it will be more or less clear.

Would you like to touch the clouds? I think yes, since you have opened this article Burj Khalifa beckons many tourists to Dubai. Sometimes they go there just for her sake. Even ordinary tourists, not romantics or dreamers, cannot bypass the famous tower. It will be an eyesore, feeling like a mirage in the light haze of the hot Dubai air.

Yes, its height is amazing, but did you think that this is where its singularity ends? After all, everyone only talks about height? Let's figure out whether it is worth spending money on expensive tickets and how to save money if you decide to climb it.

In 2018, the Burj Khalifa (aka Burj Dubai) is still considered the highest in the history of mankind - 828 meters and 163 floors. Tourists cannot climb to the very last floor. The highest level available to tourists is located on the 148th floor - the observation deck "at the Top Sky". But most of it is limited to a visit to the "at the Top" site on the 124-125th floor. Why?

Burj Khalifa is, first of all, a business center with offices and apartments, almost half of which are empty. Neither foreigners nor locals want to live behind glass and concrete. At the same time, the infrastructure of the tower is well developed.

Open area At the Top

One of the best world-class business hotels - Armani 5 * is located on the 1st to 39th floors, the design and interior of which was developed personally by Giorgio Armani.

At.mosphere on the 122nd floor is far from the most sophisticated restaurant in Dubai in terms of interiors and cuisine. The main feature is panoramic views of the city, and therefore they come here not only to have a meal. But more on that later.

In addition, Burj Dubai has broken records for the highest swimming pool (76), nightclub (144) and mosque (158). All this beauty is served by 57 elevators, only one of which rises immediately from the first floor to the last.

Don't forget that Burj Khalifa is like any other public place.

Ticket prices and how to save

It doesn't matter as part of an excursion or on your own, you need to pay for the ascent to Burj Khalifa. Many find the cost of admission tickets unreasonably high. The cheapest excursion to Burj Dubai (level 124-125 at sunset) I found cost $ 65 per person. This price includes the ascent to the observation deck, WiFi in the tower and binoculars.

As part of the tour, everything is clear - tickets will be issued for you. When inspecting a ticket on your own, you need to buy it yourself on the tickets.atthetop.ae website, and preferably at home. Tickets at the entrance to the tower are significantly more expensive than through the website. Tickets can be purchased up to 30 days in advance. For the coming dates, prices are significantly higher than in 4 or more days.

The famous Singing Fountains and Dubai Mall are located at the foot of the Burj Khalifa.

Note! Tickets on the site must be paid with your personal card! That is, the one on which your name and surname are written. Take it with you. Upon receipt of tickets at the box office, along with an electronic printed confirmation, they may ask for the bank card with which the transaction took place, and verify the full name with your passport!

The entrance and ticket office to Burj Khalifa are located, oddly enough, in the Dubai Mall on the GF floor (where the parking is). In the Dubai Mall, there is an indication of At the Top everywhere, so it's hard to get lost. At the entrance to the tower you will be asked for tickets. If you bought your tickets online, you will be told where to get them.

When planning your excursion, be sure to consider the weather forecast. In fog or dusty storms, you will hardly be able to enjoy the views. When climbing at sunset / dawn, consider the time of the sunset / sunrise itself. And then there were incidents

Despite the fact that Burj Khalifa is not involved in, I highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with it. An ordinary average family of three saves at least 250 USD per week on food and entertainment with its help. .

At the Top, Burj Khalifa

Observation Deck At the Top is located on floors 124 and 125. Ticket prices:

At the Top Ticket from 09.00 to 15.30 and from 18.30 to 23:00 from 16.00 to 18.00
Adult from 12 years old 141 AED 221 AED
Child from 4 to 11.99 years old 111 AED 181 AED
Children up to 4 years old is free is free

The cost of tickets depends on the time of the rise (from 9:00 to 23:00, every half hour).

In the daytime - the cheapest. As for me, there is nothing to do there during the day. A gray faded city does not make the proper impression. Of the advantages of a day visit, only the absence of queues, and even then not always.

The time you stay inside does not matter. That is, you can buy a ticket for 11 am and spend the whole day on the observation deck. Nobody will kick you out. But there is really nothing to do there. There is no cafe / restaurant on the observation deck, there is nowhere to sit - everyone is sitting on the floor. As a result, tourists do not stay at the sites for more than two hours.

The most the best time visiting the tower - sunset hours (from 16:00 to 18:00). They are also the most expensive and popular - while waiting for the rise, guests of the tower can stand in line for an hour and a half. Nevertheless, I recommend this time, as you will see both daytime Dubai and evening Dubai with its lights and fountain shows.

A small and logical life hack for saving - take the rise at 15:30. I do not recommend taking the evening time, but it is still better than purely "daytime".

At the Top, Burj Khalifa SKY

The SKY observation deck is located on the 148th floor. Visit cost:

Ticket At the Top SKY from 19:00 to 22:00 from 09:30 to 18:00
Adult from 12 years old 375 AED 530 AED
Child from 4 to 12 years old 375 AED 530 AED
Children up to 4 years old is free is free

For this money, both the 148th floor and the 125-124th floor are available to the guests of the tower. However, it will not be possible to move between them without hindrance - first 148, then descent to 124–125. The time spent on the viewing platforms is not limited.

The special features of this program include not only the height of the level, but also being accompanied by a tour guide + a welcome drink and cake in the SKY Lounge. In addition, level 148 is more suited to long wait- there are enough sofas and armchairs.

At the Top SKY is significantly smaller than the areas at level 124–125, but there are not many people here either.

The Lounge, Burj Khalifa

In February 2019, Burj Khalifa opened the world's tallest lounge. It is located on floors 152, 153 and 154, that is, almost 30 floors above the main observation deck At The Top and 4 above the SKY platform.

The Lounge is not an observation deck in the traditional sense, although the views are excellent, and there is also an open area. This place is primarily created for a pleasant pastime and communication: guests are offered non-alcoholic sweet drinks, tea, coffee, champagne (in the evenings), as well as snacks and desserts. Live music performances are organized after sunset.

Prices are high, but if you have money, it's worth a visit. Entry tickets also bought on the official website (prices per person, no difference in age):

Program Time
Tea in the clouds 12:30 – 14:30 15:00 – 17:00
AED 600 AED 600
Bubbly Sundowner 17:30 – 19:00
AED 649
Cocktails under the stars 19:30 – 21:00 21:30 – 00:00
AED 600 AED 600

In addition to direct tickets to observation decks, you can buy additional excursions on the official website:

At.mosphere: restaurant and lounge

I often hear from tourists that instead of the Burj Khalifa viewing platforms, it is more profitable to visit the At.mosphere restaurant or lounge on the 122nd floor. In principle, I even agree, but with the amendment - it is more profitable not in terms of money, but in terms of the atmosphere. This is a very prestigious place for lunch with business partners or a romantic dinner. There are no "random" people here. To do this, At.mosphere has not only a strict dress code, but also the rule of a minimum order amount:

The Restaurant At.mosphere:

  • breakfast: set - 350 AED; à la carte - 200 AED;
  • lunch: 220 AED regardless of the location of the table;
  • Dinner: AED 880 for window tables, AED 580 for others.

At.mosphere Lounge:

  • lunch: 250 AED for tables by the window, unlimited for the rest;
  • Afternoon Tea: AED 515 for window tables, AED 440 for others.

In addition, there are age restrictions for guests. Lounge: from 12:00 to 17:00 children over 10 years old are allowed. From 17:00 to 02:00 over the age of 21. Restaurant: breakfast - no age limit. Lunch and dinner - over 10 years old.

As you can see, the amounts are solid. But far from poor people come here to "show off" and "for show". Should you replace the observation deck with a restaurant or lounge, At.mosphere? If the funds allow, then I think it is possible.

At.mosphere Restaurant

Is it worth climbing the Burj Khalifa observation decks themselves? As for me, you only need to climb if you have "extra" money. A rare tourist is really delighted with what he saw. For such a price of tickets, everyone expects something "Wow", but somehow it does not add up. Therefore, I am shifting the answer to you - I really don’t know if you will like it or not.
