Elblag (German Elbing ) was founded in 1237 by the knights of the Teutonic Order near the place where the Prussian trading settlement of Truso existed in the 9th century. Conceived as a port city. In 1246 Elblg received city rights, and in 1358 it became a member of the Hanseatic League. From the middle of the XIV century, it gradually loses its importance as a port in favor of Danzig.

Throughout its history, Elblg has been under the rule of the Teutonic Order, Prussia, Sweden, Germany. During the Second World War it was badly damaged. From 1945 it finally became part of Poland, from 1975 to 1998 it was the administrative center of the Elblg Voivodeship. It is currently in the status of an urban settlement.

Near Kaliningrad region the Polish town of Elblag is located. Where the ancient port city of East Prussia once stood, in 1237 the Teutong Order erected a fortress. Soon, in 1246, this area received city status and its current name Elblg, in honor of the river on the banks of which it was founded.

Until the XX century. the city was the main seaport Poland. Unfortunately, the "old" part of Elblag was almost completely wiped off the face of the Earth during the Second World War. The reconstruction of buildings and monuments is still ongoing. historic center town. Elblag, according to travelers, is quite quiet and quiet place... It is pleasant to walk along it, enjoy ancient historical monuments and picturesque park areas.

The oldest temple in the city, located in its very heart. The most high building throughout the country. The top of the tower reaches 97 meters away... The building itself dates back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, the building, after numerous reconstructions, has been doubled. External and internal decoration of the church of St. Nicholas is made in the Gothic style: a bronze font, wooden statues, altars brought here from other temples in the country. There is also a working body here.

The main attraction of Elblg, the Trade Gate, is located on the Old Market Street. They have retained their appearance since the XIV century, since the reign of the Teutong Order. Their height is 95 meters. With observation deck the towers are very clearly visible beautiful panorama cities. And at the foot of the gate there is a monument to the “Boy-baker”, who, according to legends, saved the city from the invasion of knights.

One of the oldest buildings in Elblag is the St. Spirit and the adjacent temple. The construction of the complex began in the 13th century. The buildings were originally wooden, but after the fire they were built of bricks. Everything was not located in the buildings of this church. Soon after the hospital there was a shelter for the sick and homeless. In the 1770s, he served as a garrison church for the Polish army. In 1807 there was a bakery and a flour warehouse owned by the French. The city library currently operates here.

In the town of Elblag there is an interesting path that connects two streets, on which the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Dominican Cathedral. The Church Trail is the narrowest street in the town, 60 meters long. It is noteworthy that at night this path is blocked on both sides by powerful cast iron gates.

Those who like to visit city museums while traveling will like the Historical and Archaeological Museum. It is located in a castle that belonged to the Teutonic Order. It was formed relatively recently, in 1954. The museum exhibits musical instruments, ancient leather items, ceramics, amber, pilgrimage signs and many other valuable exhibits.

The Church of the Assumption or St. Mary's Church historically belonged to the complex of the Dominican Monastery. It was built for three hundred years, from the XIII century. - XVI century. Like many other buildings in the city, it is lined with red bricks with a red tiled roof. Today the premises of the church are used as the El contemporary art gallery. Also, concerts, festivals and competitions are often held there.

In the Bazhantarnia Park, there is an interesting palace of August Abbeg, with many small turrets. It was built in 1811 by the order of the consul August Abbeg. They built it as a hotel, and later gave it to the state. Now it is used as a building for the Elblg Forestry.

Like all other buildings in Elblag, St. Antonia was built in the Gothic style with bricks. In the past, it underwent a powerful reconstruction, after which the wall paintings, the tower, and the arches were restored. Inside, in good condition, there is an ancient 14th-century sprinkler. And at the top of the tower there are beautiful bells cast in the 16th century.

This small temple has an unusual fate, as it was originally built in a completely different place. Several centuries later, it was transferred to its current habitat. The church is considered one of the most valuable Baroque monuments, built in the 18th century.

The façade of the building differs from typical Elblg buildings by the presence of many intersecting beams that create a unique, interesting wall pattern. In the XX century. this historical monument was dismantled and transported, while subjecting it to the necessary reconstruction and re-consecration. Nowadays, various religious services and rituals are regularly held inside the temple.

The first Catholic church in Elblag. Locals also call it St. Wojciech. In 1901, it was decided to build a church for the townspeople professing Catholicism. For this, a piece of land was purchased in the Pangritz area. Fortunately, during the Great Patriotic War, the temple was not badly damaged. The only thing is that the bells on its tower were removed for melting. Therefore, the new bells were taken from the temple of the Three Kings.

Lovers of skiing or snowboarding on the slopes will also find something to do in Elblag. In winter, on Mount Brave, the season opens winter species sports. Here you will find slopes of varying difficulty, a snow park, a snow tubing track. For those who did not take their skis with them, you can borrow them at the rental point. The length of the slopes of Mount Brave - 430 meters away, and the differences in its heights reach 60 meters. The mountain itself is located in the most picturesque forested city area of ​​Elblag. But in the summer, there is something to do in this place: a rope park, a high-speed rope descent and a petanque area. At the foot of the mountain, not far from the ski lifts, you can find a small local cafe with free internet access.

The Polish port of Elblag, located on the banks of the river of the same name, is unusually colorful and attractive.

Its medieval streets are in no way inferior to those of Prague in their beauty, and the atmosphere in the Old Town is European, and even from the Middle Ages.

The first mention of the city dates back to 1237. It was founded by the knights of the Teutonic Order to organize international trade... Soon, the port called Elblag received the status of a member of the Hanseatic Trade Union.

To this day, archaeologists find "traces" of wealthy merchants - jewelry, ceramics, glass, and other medieval values.

Power changed, the balance of power in Europe, but Elblag invariably remained one of the largest and most popular ports on the territory of modern Poland.

The epochs left their "traces" in the form of architectural landmarks that guests of the city can enjoy to this day. Unfortunately, many of them were damaged during the Second World War, but the restorers were able to restore the medieval look of the center of Elblag.

Architectural masterpieces Since the Middle Ages, many cities in Poland can boast, but the attractions of Elblag occupy a special place in this list.

Its old part with a unique historical layout is a truly magical place like you cannot find in Poland.

Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets of the city, you can stumble upon interesting Gothic buildings, for example, the Fair Gate, Cathedral St. Nicholas, and, of course, numerous churches, among which the Dominican and St. Adalbert stand out for their unusual appearance.

Another attraction of Elblag, without which it is simply impossible to imagine not only the city, but the whole of Poland, are the fragments of the old Teutonic castle, built in the 13th century.

Unfortunately, not much has survived from it: part of the walls, granaries and cellars. However, this is enough to be transported even for a moment to the era of valiant knights, brilliant victories and devastating defeats, and also to imagine what the city of Elblag was like hundreds of years ago.

By the way, the Fair Gate, located on the territory of Old Elblag, was also once one of the elements of the castle. They were moved to Stary Rynok Street much later, mainly to give the city center a colorful look and attract tourists.

There are not so many museums in Elblag, but those that are, undoubtedly, deserve attention.

Historical and archaeological is considered one of the most interesting, the exposition of which includes exhibits found during excavations. This is one of the most impressive collections not only in Poland, but throughout Europe.

Art lovers should definitely look into the El Gallery (its name, of course, is associated with the city), located in the Dominican Church. And of course, connoisseurs and amateurs alike will surely admire the collection of ancient books in the Elblag library.

Thanks to a coincidence, we ended up in Elblag for a few days.
It is absolutely divorced from the usual urban bustle of the city of the former East Prussia. From the bustling coast Baltic Sea it is separated by 40 km, everything is unhurried and measured here.

The canal connects the system of lakes in the vicinity of the towns of Ilawa and Ostroda with the Vistula Lagoon of the Baltic Sea, the length of the canal is more than 80 km.
The most unusual place channel, which brought him fame - a small section (9.6 km) with a significant difference in altitude (more than 100 meters). A system of five ship lifts has been built on this section, which transport ships on dry land (!). According to the principle of operation, the ship lift resembles a funicular and is a kind of ship railway. The ship lifts are still powered by the original hydraulic mechanisms that have survived since the construction of the canal (1860).

In fact, most of the old buildings are restored from original designs or sketches. Elblag was badly damaged in the last years of the Second World War, most of the buildings were destroyed. It took over 50 years to rebuild the city. But in the end everything worked out, you see for yourself.

The hotel is quite modest, the rooms are very simple, many rooms do not have a bathroom (there are two or three bathrooms on the floor for several rooms).
There is parking, WI FI, you can order breakfasts, extremely polite and attentive staff. Considering that we only spent the night at this hotel, no complaints.
