Kulyab is located in the valley of the river. Yakhsu, 203 kilometers from Dushanbe. Kulyab attracts many tourists with its sights. The city got its name from the Tajik word, which translates as "lake water" or "thickets, wetland".

The emergence of Kulyab

The first mention of Kulyab dates back to the 13th century. After that, for many centuries, the city was an important cultural, commercial, economic and political center in the Khatlon region of Tajikistan. Kulyab (Tajikistan) had mutually beneficial relations with many countries of the West and East.

Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, the city was the main one in the Bukhara Khanate. There were many schools and higher educational institutions in Kulob. Crafts and trade developed constantly and rapidly. Scientific and literary associations were active. In the period from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Forty poets lived in the city. History: Nasekh, Shokhin, Bismil and some others.

Kulob and modern Tajikistan

G. Kulyab received the status of a city in 1934. It became the largest locality in Eastern Bukhara. There were 20 blocks in the city. The varied handicrafts were of a high standard in quality and performance. The most demanded were:

  • weaving;
  • joinery and jewelry;
  • leather and pottery production;
  • production of metal products (knives, horse harness, etc.).

Accordingly, Tajikistan was rich in bazaars. Kulyab is a city where trade developed rapidly. Kulyab embroideries, which had unique patterns and colors, were highly valued. These were truly artistic masterpieces.

Local Attractions

Tajikistan can please tourists with interesting sights. Kulob city is famous unique mountain Khoja Mumin, which is located only 22 kilometers from it. The mountain is composed of multi-colored salt crystals. In its place, millions of years ago, the waves of the ancient Tethys Sea splashed. On the seabed salts were constantly deposited. They, in turn, were pressed by shearing rocks. As a result, the salt lay down in layers in one place and gradually formed a natural column. Then the sediments spread a little to the sides, and a real mountain turned out. Today, the dome of the salt mountain rises above the surface for almost a kilometer, and 4 more go into the bowels of the earth.

This is not the only interesting thing about the mountain. Tourists are attracted by its caves. They are entirely composed of salt multicolored iridescent stalactites. At the same time, you can hear amazing natural music in the caves. It is published by stalactites swaying from the wind.

Another attraction that Tajikistan (Kulyab) boasts is the mausoleum of the world of Sayyid Ali Hamadoni. Memorial Complex located in the city center. The mausoleum is surrounded by a park area with majestic century-old plane trees.

The remains of a person resting in the memorial complex belong to a poet, thinker and philosopher. His son and other relatives are also buried in the mausoleum, along with the caretaker of the memorial and its mosque, Sheikh Shoki Tolikoni. He lived in Tolucana.

The building was built in the tradition of the Middle Ages. At first, the mausoleum had 3 portal entrances with a domed hall, which was variously decorated. The tomb and the mosque were added to the memorial much later. The original building dates back to the fifteenth century.

In the 1970s. the memorial complex (Tajikistan, Kulyab) was restored. The work was carried out with the aim of maximizing the preservation of the primordial nature of the ancient monument. There is a tombstone next to it. It is engraved with inscriptions in Persian and Arabic. The headstone is decorated with geometric patterns.

On the western side of the inscription is the name of the deceased - Amir Muhammad bin Shaikh Abdullah. He was the son of King Khatlon. The headstone is rectangular and weighs approximately a ton. According to legend, the material was brought on elephants from India. The memorial complex (Tajikistan, Kulyab) is a place of pilgrimage not only for the local population. The mausoleum is constantly visited by thousands of tourists.

Also in the city you can visit other monuments of culture and history. For example, the mausoleums of Tillo Halloji and Khoja Durbod, the Kalam Mir fortress, the Kofyrkalya settlement. As well as natural objects: mountain range Childukhtaron and Sari Khosor gorge.

And behind the Tebolai rocky village, a house of almost constructivist appearance opens and the center of Kulob begins:

Of course, this is a bazaar, and in some places quite spectacular:

Those high-speed guys, whom I sat down with in Khulbuk, drove me to the bazaar. Opposite the market place I saw the Khatlon hotel, and immediately went there, having neither the strength nor the desire to look for something better. "Khatlon" turned out to be both the worst and the most expensive hotel of the trip. The renovated facade hid gloomy corridors and uncomfortable common-type rooms, and all the rooms were three-bed by default, and after some bargaining I had to pay 120 somoni (about 1000 rubles) per night. The entire huge building was served by a slender boy-administrator who watched Iranian films in his "aquarium", and an old maid who looked like a mummy, who almost did not understand Russian. In the room, I did not find any towels or soap, and if they brought me a towel right away, then the soap - only after half an hour, moreover - in a package, that is, the maid just went to the bazaar for it. I bought, as I was going, mineral water, kefir and activated carbon, and prepared for a very unpleasant night. The night turned out to be even worse, because from time to time water disappeared in the room. A couple of times I went to the administrator, he sent the maid to fix something, but it did not help for long. In the end, I was offered to move to another room, and when I got over, I realized that the linen was wrinkled and smelled of someone else's body. I returned to the first room for linen, and my fears were confirmed: the maid simply made the bed, not at all embarrassed by the fact that a man had just been lying here with very unappetizing symptoms, driving away thoughts of cholera and other local infection for half the night. Towards morning, however, I was released, and having moved out (these slovens did not want to leave things), I went for a walk.

From the window of "Khatlon" there was a view of the very thick of the bazaar. I could have photographed it in the soft passing evening light, but in the evening I could not bring myself to go out even to the balcony:

But even in the backlight, you can appreciate the beauty of the bazaar pavilion mosaics:

In addition to the hotel opposite the market and one of the university buildings - a full-fledged, by the way, stalinka:

Behind which there is a vast square with the pretentious Memorial to the 2700th anniversary of Kulyab. Where this date comes from - no one really knows, it's just that in 2006 it was decided that, after probably having bargained properly, write 3000 years or 2000 (" 2500 and this is mine the last word! -No, 2700! Okay, hand over it. Let it be 2700. But no more(With) ! ". Such a thought also suggests itself: the age of Samarkand is traditionally estimated at 2700 years old, and whether at some point Rakhmonov wanted him native city was older than Karimov's?

The memorial is quite impressive. To the left (where we came from) is a museum:

Below the avenue is a replica of the citadel, similar to all those in Dushanbe:

You can clearly see how the green mahallas break off into the Yakhsu floodplain, and the end of the low mountains in the distance marks its arrow with Surkhob. There is a very interesting confusion here: the fact is that Surkhob is the upper reaches of the Vakhsh, and the local river on Soviet maps was designated as Kyzylsu - both mean "Red Water" in Tajik and in Uzbek, respectively. But since there is no place for Turkic toponymy in proud Aryan Tajikistan, now there are two Surkhobs in the country, one of which is consistently related to Vakhsh, and the other - in parallel.
In secular Kulyab, unlike the religious Kurgan-Tyube, the mosque stands in a rather prominent place, but in general, with all the piety of the inhabitants, there are few mosques in Tajikistan and they did not have a single style:

Large buildings on the other side of the avenue are the center of Kulyab:

A couple of unusual Soviet high-rise buildings, good ashkhans at every turn ...

And an old plane tree in the middle of the pavement. His age is 302 years (but I do not know in what year the sign was hung), the girth is 796 cm, and the height (exactly like that) is 21 m. Behind the tree - shopping center, and in it the hotel "Chinar", where I moved on the second night:

There was at least a recent renovation here, at least an elevator, and the rooms are clearly fresh linen and a working shower, where only hot water disappeared from time to time, and not all the water at all. They even promised wi-fi, but, as it turned out, there is only on the first floor, and on this occasion I still bargained for a discount - instead of 100 somoni they settled me for 80. When I checked in, there was a smart man-administrator at the reception desk, judging by to a respectable appearance, he is also the director, and in the evening, when I do not remember what jambs were found, only the maid, painfully catching Wi-Fi, remained in place - in general, a pretty, thin, dark-haired girl who understood a little Russian. A little - because, while texting on a smartphone with a certain wrestling-looking guy (husband, fiancé, lover?), To most of my questions she only asked “What ?!” in a completely gopov tone, and clearly not out of harm. A wrestling-looking guy is not a hindrance if he is on the phone - by nightfall a racing guy knocked on my room and offered a "massage", which I refused even without highly moral reflections: after a hard last night and day, I just wanted to sleep on my feet.

The frame above shows the view from the hotel window (and these hills are already the Pamir, gaining height from the edges to the middle extremely slowly). The frame below is the next house along the avenue. In general, Kulyab looks much more modest and provincial than Kurgan-Tyube, and indeed, in our understanding, it is not very similar to a regional center.

Here, a pretty girl, whom I forgot to photograph, introduced herself as the host of a local TV channel and started taking a short interview with me, but quickly realized that I was not in that state, and her face after a night in Khatlon was clearly not photogenic.

The park is full of people, several teahouses and God knows what else:

On different sides of the park there is a television center, a hukumat and a House of Culture, where the youth rehearsed something for the Independence Day that day:

DK looks at the deserted square above the park:

There was no full-fledged theater, which even cities like or were equipped with, in Soviet Kulyab. But there was a pedagogical institute (1945-53), which in 1992 became the Kulyab University. He knows the other three sides of the square:

For the non-capital Central Asian city of Kulob, it is very rich in Stalinism, and its main ensemble is university:

The campus looks very solid:

And only Rudaki, whose name is the university, bashfully lurked in the backyard:

And on the far side of the park, the mausoleum of Mir Said Hamadani shines with golden domes, basically medieval (either at the turn of the 14-15 centuries, when the saint died, or in the 1590s - according to some reports, the grave was moved here at the behest of the Bukhara khan), and on the outside it is completely redecorated, and I have more golden domes in Central Asia I don't remember right away. Ali bin Shihabuddin of Hamadan (a city in Iran) lived in the 14th century, was a famous Sufi of the Kubrawiya order, and was most famous for converting Kashmir to Islam with his sermons. He died during the Hajj in Afghanistan, and I don't know exactly why he was buried here. According to the already mentioned Andrey Manchev, in Kashmir they are ready to carry a person who has visited Kulyab in their arms for the mere fact that his gaze touched this mausoleum:

The park was laid out, of course, on the site of a cemetery, in the middle of which there was a mausoleum. The most beautiful gravestone brought here from India is preserved under the canopy - the son of the local bey Muhammad bin Sheikh Abdullah was buried under it.

Also on the square near the mausoleum there is a museum and a couple of grandiose plane trees:

I don’t know, on whose money the marafet was introduced here - is it their own, India, Pakistan? Also in Kulob there are at least Iranian and Azerbaijani schools - with foreign connections, the "Kulob clan" is doing well.

The avenue goes further, past the garrison of the 201st division, which in 2015 relocated from here to Dushanbe. There was no war in Kulob itself, and the closest battle to the city unfolded on July 13, 1993, when militants from the territory of Afghanistan attacked the 12th frontier post of the Moscow frontier detachment near the village of Sari-Gor: out of 48 people at the outpost 25 died in battle, others managed to break through to reinforcements. I knew that the garrison had been withdrawn from Kulob, but still I did not dare to photograph the military unit, so the last shot was from the courtyard of the mausoleum.

a, which celebrated its 2700th anniversary in 2006. Located in Khatlon region, the valley of the Yakhsu river (Panj basin) not far from the foot Hazratishokh ridge, which is 203 km southeast the capital of the republic - the city of Dushanbe.

As of 2003, population of Kulob is 83 thousand people, ethnic Tajiks. The official language is Tajik, but many people in the city speak Russian well. The main confessional affiliation is Sunni Muslims.

12 km from the city is located international Airport Kulob city carrying passengers in all directions.
Kulyab valley, from time immemorial occupied a profitable geographical position... Abundantly irrigated by high-water mountain rivers, its fertile lands, from time immemorial, were places of settlement of ancient people, the earliest of which date back to the Stone Age.

In the VI-IV centuries. BC e., territory of modern Kulob was part of Ahmenid state and then was conquered Alexander the Great... It is known for certain that it was after the conquest Huttal region(former name Kulyab district), Alexander's troops should have moved to Sogdiana, however, were detained for a long time, incessant rebellions and uprisings of the rebellious inhabitants. Exactly because of this reason, Macedonian I had to build my outpost here on the river Amu-Darya (Oaks) - Alexandria Oxiana.

In the IV century A.D., Huttal country, spread over a vast territory between Pyanj and Vakhshim declares itself as a strong and economically developed state, taking one of the leading places in trade between countries Central Asia ... The trade turnover was huge, it was from here that the famous argamaks, the progenitors of Arab horses, legendary horses, later sung in Arab and Persian poetry, were exported.

In the XI-XII centuries, people left Khuttal city for completely unknown reasons. Its capital was destroyed and consigned to oblivion - Khulbuk, on the site of which, much later built new town named Kulyab.

Almost until the middle of the 20s of the XX century Kulyab Bekstvo remained a remote wilderness province Bukhara Emirate... However, even at these times the region was fully developed economically. According to Russian travelers: “Silver business flourishes in Kulob, they weave paper and silk fabrics, make copper, wood and earthenware. Cattle breeders felted felt, weave carpets, gilems (long-piled carpets), carpets. They also own huge herds of horses ... "

In 1934 Kulyab received the status of a city, and in 1956 a narrow-gauge Railway connecting Kulyab with Dushanbe and Termez... Today, instead of the old narrow-gauge railway, a modern railway line has been built, which serves passenger and cargo transportation throughout the country and to neighboring states. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and The Russian Federation.

Today Kulob - quite modern city , but, as before, its inhabitants honor the traditions of their ancestors, preserving the ancient crafts. Kulyab carpets, suzane and national dresses are among the best in the country and are considered the most desirable souvenirs.

The city's attractions Kulyab and its surroundings are simply amazing. I would especially like to note such historical and cultural monuments as: mausoleum of Mir Said Ali Hamadoni, Tillo Halloji's mausoleum, mausoleum of Khoja Durbod, mausoleum-madrasah of Khoja Mashhad, fortress Kalai Mir, Takhti Sangin (Stone throne), settlement Kofyrkala.

Natural objects are very interesting: Mount Khoja Mumin, mountain range « Childukhtaron», mountain gorge Sari Khosor.

Sights of Kulob city

The monument is located right in the center of Kulob city in a beautiful park area and is a multi-layered portal-domed mausoleum, built of baked bricks on clay mortar, covered with a double high dome. It was built at the turn of the XIV-XV centuries by local architects according to the project of Iranian masters and was a tribute to the disciples of Mir Said Ali Hamadoni to his teacher ...

A wonderful natural monument, located 22 km from the city of Kulob, near the village of Vose. The mountain consists entirely of pure salt of various colors: bluish green and pink, fawn and gray. Millions of years ago, an ancient sea, the Tethys, was spread on this place. At its bottom, salt was gradually deposited, which was squeezed from all sides by other rocks. As a result, the salt was layered ...
