Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls have been declared forgeries. The Dead Sea is dying - its level drops by more than a meter in a year (19 photos) Who Killed the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is a wonderful place where you can not only have a great rest, but also improve your health. People from all over the world come here to look at this unique reservoir and enjoy its beauty. In addition, this sea has unusual properties that help people cope with many diseases.

Salt, minerals, pure water and oxygen - these are the main advantages of a holiday at the Dead Sea. The best thing is that the water of this sea is so clean and transparent that you can see all the smallest details of the relief to the very bottom. Such beauty cannot be seen anywhere else. And besides, the landscapes that complement the overall picture of the atmosphere are no less beautiful.

Where is the dead sea

The sea does not occupy a very significant part of the land, but extends over the territory of as many as three countries - Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

Scientists are still arguing about what is the correct name for this reservoir? Sea or lake? Many people used to call it the sea. The length of the lake is about 70 kilometers, and the width is about eighteen.

Dead Sea Coast Climate

It is worth noting that the temperature on the coast of the sea is kept at about 24 degrees almost all the time. Therefore, you can enjoy such a vacation at any time of the year.

What to do with yourself at this resort?

For vacationers and tourists, large-scale complexes have been created here, consisting of good hotels, hospitals and spas. Probably, many people know or have heard that medicine in Israel is one of the best, therefore it is here that many medical and health procedures are carried out. Many tourists are wildly delighted with the local spa. The effect, as they say, is on the face. Well, on the body))). In general, the Dead Sea Coast is not a landmark beach resort... But despite this, there are a great many tourists and vacationers.

Zest of the Dead Sea

The most interesting thing is that it is almost impossible to swim in such a sea. This is due to the fact that there is a huge amount of salt. Its concentration and density is so great that you can just lie on the water without making any movements. In order to swim at least a little, you need to make every effort, and turn out and, as it were, spin around you. From the outside, these movements seem strange and funny. But this also has its advantages. Can you imagine what a wonderful exercise this is? Almost titanic efforts))).

By the way, even those who cannot swim at all can have a great time here. Drowning in the Dead Sea is practically impossible, unless no one will drown you on purpose. Personally, I really liked lying on the surface of the water and sunbathing with a magazine in my hands. Several pleasures at the same time - such a pastime is possible only here.

As soon as you enter the sea, you can feel how all the small scratches on the body react to the salt water. The skin begins to tingle and pinch. That is why, if the integrity of the skin is violated, then it is better to avoid such bathing. Otherwise, you will be able to fully feel the meaning of Vysotsky's song "Don't rub salt on my wound, it still hurts."

You need to be especially careful with your eyes. Try to swim so that water does not get on the mucous membrane. The eyes immediately begin to burn very strongly, tears run in a stream. Unpleasant sensations, I can tell you. I was not lucky. Here I was lying on some water, did not touch anyone, but there was a couple with a child about 8 years old. So this young bully took and splashed some water on my face. Naughty. I just experienced a gamut of non-transferable sensations. Surprise, sharp pain in the eyes, watery eyes and wild anger at all ill-mannered children in the world!

By the way, many scientists argue that such a miracle of nature as the Dead Sea may soon disappear from the face of the Earth. Therefore, it is definitely worth visiting right now, so as not to miss the opportunity to see the unique sea and personally appreciate the charm of the surrounding nature.

The Masada Hostel.

The main advantage is inexpensive. A good location - we also add a plus sign at the foot of the mountain. Rooms for several people, cleanliness is acceptable. Not very comfortable, noisy and crowded. In Israel, certain problems arise with communication. But it is worth noting that in some hotels the staff speaks Russian, and no one canceled the audio translators. So, it's not worth learning Hebrew to visit the famous lake.

Contraindications for recreation at the Dead Sea

There are some diseases and abnormalities in the body with which you should not visit such resorts. Such diseases include malignant tumors, heart disease, diabetes, renal dysfunction, bleeding, infectious diseases, epileptic seizures and other severe diseases.

People who suffer from such diseases are not recommended to visit such resorts, swim in salt water, and also be treated with mud.

Why was the sea called dead?

This is because no living creature can survive in such salty water. There is nothing but a few species of bacteria that have adapted to such a habitat. It is also impossible to cross this lake, even by boat. The fact is that all objects that have fallen into the water are simply pushed to the surface by the lake. There were daredevils who tried to prove to the world that nothing is impossible. But in the end it all ended in failure. The boats overturned, and people did not die from drowning, but from poisoning. The salt concentration is so high that the consistency of the water resembles a jelly.

Why don't the Jews bathe in the Dead Sea?

There is a legend that earlier on the site of this lake there were Sodom and Gomorrah. The inhabitants of these cities were such sinners that the Lord sent down punishment on us in the form of a sulfur-salt rain. All the wicked have died. Only one righteous man by the name of Lot survived, though he remained alone, because his wife turned into a pillar of salt. Apparently she also sinned a lot. The Jews believe that at the bottom of the Dead Sea are the corpses of those wicked people and to swim in this water means to share in their sins. This is one of the versions, since the disputes of the Jews about this sea-lake still do not subside.

Conclusion

I enjoyed relaxing on the Dead Sea coast. Plus I brought with me a lot of natural cosmetics. And my skin is so cool after the local spa treatments. As a spa destination, the Dead Sea cannot be compared to any other spa in Moscow.

This was stated by American researchers

Some of the Kurmanian manuscripts, also known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, may not actually be of ancient origin. This statement was made by experts from the Museum of the Bible in Washington. Scientists have questioned the authenticity of 5 of the 16 fragments stored in the collection of this American institution.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are called manuscripts discovered since 1947 in caves in the area called Qumran, as well as in its vicinity. It is believed that some of these scrolls were written in the Kurman community, which existed in the first quarter of the 2nd century BC. Fragments of ancient manuscripts continue to be found in Qumran to this day - new such finds were reported, including last year.

The Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, took part in a study of ancient manuscripts two years ago, during which scholars had their first doubts about the authenticity of the manuscripts in their possession. They were prompted by the technique of writing texts, as well as the state of the art of manuscripts.

After that, five of the fragments that aroused suspicion among scientists were transferred to outside specialists for additional research. Experts from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Germany, who carried out the expertise, used a number of the most modern technologies, including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence analysis and three-dimensional microscopy. Tests have shown that many of the characteristics of the manuscripts do not allow confirming their ancient origin, and therefore the museum decided not to exhibit them anymore. In the future, the remaining 11 fragments will be studied in a similar way.

Experts note that they hoped for a different result, but they see in the current situation an opportunity to draw attention to the significance of such checks. Museum staff urged colleagues around the world to pay as much as possible to inspect ancient artifacts so that visitors can be sure that they are seeing authentic cultural heritage sites during exhibitions.

Dead Sea - myths and reality

Recently, in a certain environment, the theory has been spreading that they say the Dead Sea is "cursed" ... You cannot swim in it. Women are not allowed to use his cosmetics, etc. About the Dead Sea cosmetics I will say a few words below, but this will in no way be connected with this theory ...
So, the essence of the spreading "horror stories" about the Dead Sea is that, they say, on its shores there were famous cities Sodom and Gomorrah, which, according to the Old Testament, were punished by God for the depravity and unnatural behavior of the inhabitants and were destroyed ... According to another version, the sea itself was formed later exactly on the site of these cities ...
Perhaps these cities were really here ...

But here again, two small details from the same Holy Scripture, but from the New Testament, and at the same time from geography.
First, the Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea. And on the Jordan River, as we know from the Gospels, the Baptism of the Lord took place. And Baptism sanctified the nature of the waters ... And since the Jordan flows into the Dead Sea, it means, therefore, if there was something negative there, then Baptism neutralized all this negative ...
Secondly, in the Acts of the Apostles there is good phrase: "What God has cleansed, do not consider that unclean" .... That is, "unclean" natural objects simply do not exist ... There is our specific attitude towards them and we ourselves sometimes make them truly unclean when we pollute them. ..
And finally, let's think logically, can nature be responsible for the sins of people and be damned? I don’t think so ....
And one more very important thing.
The theory that the Dead Sea supposedly keeps the memory of the history of Sodom and Gomorrah is based on ... the occult theory that every place on Earth keeps the memory of the events that happened on it throughout history ... According to this theory , you cannot live in places where there used to be places of battles, cemeteries, prisons, concentration camps, places of executions, hospitals, etc. in places where people suffered or died forcibly ...
Of course, in a purely human way, this theory can be understood ... If you know that there was once a cemetery on the site of your house or there was once a place of mass executions, then when you remember about it you will clearly not be yourself ... And remember, if you know about it, you will, where can you get away from it ... But firstly - this theory is purely occult and scientifically not confirmed. And secondly, excuse me, over the past centuries on our Earth there are almost no places left where there would be no cemeteries, hospitals, prisons, places of executions, places of battles, etc. So where can we go? Perhaps the Arctic and Antarctic? But it’s cold there and they don’t accommodate everyone ...
But back to the Dead Sea ...
In fact, as we see, again, relying on the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, from a spiritual point of view, it does not carry any harm ...
Moreover, if we take a purely medical point of view, then it is very useful ... Nowadays, it is located on the border of Israel and Jordan. And both states are building hotels and sanatoriums on its shores, and bathing procedures in this sea are prescribed in sanatoriums, the salts of which are useful for many diseases ...
And it’s just interesting to even swim in it ... Imagine that there is such a density of salt that even if you absolutely don’t know how to swim, it will keep you ... There are photographs where bathers and bathers just lie on the water and read newspapers seem to be lying on inflatable mattresses ... In fact, there is nothing under them but water that holds them ...
And finally, one detail about the Dead Sea cosmetics.
There really is one problem with her. But it has nothing to do with all sorts of horror stories about the alleged "sinfulness" of the Dead Sea ... The fact is that cosmetics in our space the former USSR commercial pyramids are often distributed ... And there, alas, there is a considerable danger of falling for a banal fake ... If you are sure that this cosmetics is really real, then there are no purely scientific contraindications to it.

Israel has always attracted tourists from all over the world with its many attractions. Today we will not talk about places of pilgrimage, unique places of worship... This article will focus on the amazing natural monument- a huge lake, which most of our readers know as the Dead Sea. Why is it called that? What are the mysteries? What are its features?

You will find the answers to these and many other questions by reading this article.

This is a truly amazing and mysterious body of water. The legends of the Dead Sea have been folded since ancient times, it is fanned different stories and rumors. Even in its name there is a mistake: in fact, it is not a sea, but a lake (closed), and scientists managed to find some life here in the form of an insignificant number of bacterial species in the XX century. It follows from this that the name of the reservoir, which sounds in Hebrew, like Yam ha-melah ("sea of salt"), is much more consistent with the truth.

Description

Along the border of Jordan and Israel is an amazing creation of nature - the Dead Sea. Its shores, which are by no means sandy, attract tourists from all over the world. People are interested in seeing this miracle with their own eyes and plunge into the waters in which one cannot drown.

The Dead Sea is the saltiest body of water on our planet. Thanks to this, you can calmly lie down on a quiet water surface and read your favorite magazine. The concentration of salt in the local waters is amazing - more than 270 grams per liter of water. For comparison, in other salt water bodies this figure rarely exceeds 35 grams.

Unusual name

Many people know about the existence of this amazing lake in Israel, but not everyone understands why the Dead Sea is called dead. One of the reasons for such an eerie name lies precisely in the salt. Due to its highest concentration in water, only rare species of microorganisms survive. Shellfish, fish and even algae cannot stand that much salt. Fish accidentally caught in the sea die instantly, and their bodies covered with salt are carried ashore. Now you can understand why the Dead Sea is so named.

In Hebrew it is called Yam ha Maved, which translates as "sea-killer". But this one has unusual lake and more optimistic names - Arava, Lot Sea, Salt, Asphalt.

Features of water

It would seem that we have figured out why the Dead Sea is called dead. But in this regard, the following question arises - where is the amount of salt in the waters of the lake? This is explained simply, as in the case of the name. The salt sea is a kind of trap for all streams and rivers flowing into it, the water is not able to leave the boundaries of this unusual reservoir. The only way out for it is evaporation. And the salt does not evaporate, remaining in the lake. As a result, over the centuries-old history, such a huge amount of it has accumulated here.

As you can see, it is quite obvious why the Dead Sea is called dead. Due to its impressive size, the ancients mistakenly mistook the lake for the sea, and the complete absence of living creatures in it became the reason for the appearance of a frightening name.

Why the Dead Sea is so called: mysteries of history

Scientists are confident that a unique reservoir appeared on our planet during the movement of tectonic plates. The creation of depressions or mountains by the slabs is due to their displacement. When two plates collide, mountains are formed, and if they diverge, depressions appear. Many of them are filled with water, which forms lakes. Other depressions become valleys in which riverbeds run, for example, the valley through which the Jordan flows.

Twenty-five million years ago, the Syrian-African rift occurred, and much later, the plate fracture occurred across the Israel Valley. It got seawater, which was associated with a rise in ocean levels. The bay was named Lashon. This name is translated from Hebrew as "language". Its height was about 180 meters below sea level. Today, the surface of the Salt Sea is fixed at 422 meters.

About four million years ago, volcanic eruptions in the Galilee and the Golan Heights, which severed the connection between the Gulf of Lashon and Mediterranean Sea and the bay began to dry up. The Israel Valley was the first to dry up, leaving a long strip from what is now Lake Kinneret to the Dead Sea. Over time, the part that connected these two reservoirs dried up, leaving the Kinneret in the north, into which the Jordan River and numerous streams flow, and in the south the famous Salt Sea appeared.

Dead Sea: Legend

We figured out what scientists and researchers think about the emergence of a unique reservoir and the origin of its name. It's time to introduce you to an interesting and instructive legend that interprets this event in its own way.

So why is the Dead Sea called dead? Legend has it that this happened in ancient times, when there were several cities in the picturesque plain. This blessed land was famous for its olive trees, vineyards, and the scent of magnificent flowers. Orange and cypress groves surrounded the cities in which houses were built from white stone... The courtyards were decorated with fountains with water shimmering in the sun, pools in which goldfish swam silently. And beautiful and rich people lived in these cities. Each had herds of sheep, horses and camels. They dressed only in silk, ate exquisite dishes, drank excellent wines, and enjoyed freshly baked bread and aromatic fruits.

And they did not realize that vile laws reigned here, upside-downs. Archers and guards were always on the border with this area. They shot down sparrows, pigeons and crows, which were not very good for these places, on the fly with arrows. In these cities, only purebred animals were allowed to live - no stray cats or dogs. Both sick and infirm people could not get into this territory. Those who made such an attempt were severely beaten. Rich and beautiful people did not want to share even a small part of their good, and hospitality was taken here as a grave sin.

Even sick townspeople were driven out of the region, and if ugly or sick children were born, they were killed. Society was only supposed to be strong, wealthy and healthy. Here the law "push the falling one" ruled. Gradually, the people who inhabited these lands became dull with wealth, well-fed life and cruelty. Their souls dried up: there was no room in them for Faith, Wisdom and Love. They only worshiped money. They did not want to think that their well-fed life was possible only because it was given to them by the Almighty, who had been watching this country for many years.

Test of fear

And he called the angels-punishers, and ordered them to open the cave of Fear. The Almighty chose to punish this area with fear. One night, when all the inhabitants were sleeping peacefully after fun and abundant food, Fear burst out of the dark abode. As a brown monster, he sank into the plain.

In the early morning, horror awakened people. Their hearts clenched, beating so fast that in their trembling they resembled animals driven into a cage. And the faces became so pale that they seemed generously sprinkled with powder. The residents did not understand what was happening to them. The fear was passed on to animals and birds. Donkeys and camels screamed terribly, horses whinnied, peacocks lost their grandeur and ran like chickens around the yards.

Great despair shook the inhabitants, and Fear ruled the black mass. In the moments of the highest sorrow, unfortunately, none of the inhabitants of the cities remembered the Almighty, did not kneel down, did not say prayers. And fear began to break hearts, people fell dead. Those who survived had bitter tears streaming down their cheeks. But these were not tears of repentance, but only fear and despair. A few hours later, there were no survivors in the city: neither people, nor animals and birds.

And then the Almighty wiped this area from the face of the Earth. Fire fell from heaven, and the once blooming valley turned into a desert. And the tears of the inhabitants formed a sea in which no living creature can live. They called him Dead.

We have presented you two versions of why the Dead Sea is called dead - scientific and mythical. Which one is closer to you - decide for yourself.

Dimensions of the sea

This indicator changes annually, and it must be admitted that it is not upward. The Dead Sea dries up, and as a result, its length, width and depth change. According to the latest data, its length is 67 km, depth (maximum) - 380 m, width - 18 km, area - 650 sq. km.

Dead sea today

Throughout its centuries-old history, the Dead Sea was fed, in addition to mudflows, by the waters of the Jordan River. This was the case before the construction of a hydroelectric power plant designed by Pinchas Rutenberg. The permanent and main source that replenished the lake with fresh water turned out to be behind the Dgania dam, which was built in the thirties of the last century.

It opens only on rare occasions, when a particularly rainy winter is issued, so that the water does not flood the coastal settlements. The salty sea is drying up nowadays or receding by one meter a year. This is too high a rate of drainage of a unique reservoir, and therefore people have sounded the alarm. On paper, there are many desalination plans along the Mediterranean coast. This is necessary to use it instead of the one taken from the Kinneret Lake. Water from the Kinneret is planned to be directed to the Dead Sea, as it was before the construction of the dam.

Projects were developed to connect the Dead Sea with the Red and Mediterranean canals. But so far they all remain only on paper, and unique lake gradually dies.

We have told you why the Dead Sea is called dead. I would like to talk about healing properties water from this lake and mud, which are widely used in medicine and cosmetology, but this is a topic for another article.
