Rules for the carriage of liquids in hand. Rules and regulations for the carriage of liquids on the plane: how many ml can be carried in hand luggage and baggage, why not some liquids? How to transport baby food

Each person, going on vacation or on a business trip, collects the things and personal hygiene items he needs. When you plan to use the services of airlines with a flight within the country or between states, you should first study the requirements for the transportation of liquid cargo. How many ml can be carried in hand luggage on the plane, and what types are allowed.

What is meant by "liquids"?

Traveling for the first time by air always poses problems with the correct collection of items for hand luggage and checked baggage. Particular attention is paid to the transportation of liquids. It is a mistake to believe that this is only water, drinks, juices. They are considered various products, even those that have a gel-like or jelly-like state.

Carrying on liquids in carry-on baggage includes the following list:

  • a variety of yoghurts (drinking or regular);
  • alcoholic drinks;
  • baby food of all types;
  • all kinds of conservation;
  • shampoos, perfumes, perfumes;
  • make-up removers;
  • oils and creams, for example, for tanning;
  • liquid deodorants.

Transportation of items from this list is allowed on board the aircraft (in the cabin). The cargo does not need to be handed over to a special department. Particular attention should be paid to canned food. This product may contain over 95% solids but is classified as a liquid. On average, the volume of containers is 200-250 grams, which violates the rules of transportation.

Established standards

The transportation of liquid cargo on board an airliner is strictly regulated by each airline. Therefore, when checking in for the flight, all bags and suitcases are carefully inspected. When making a domestic or international flight, you will have to comply with the established norms for the carriage of liquid in the plane in hand luggage.

Due to the increased dryness of the air during the flight, people often feel very thirsty and try to carry more water than they should.

All airlines operate according to standard rules with some minor deviations. Details about this are written on the official websites of the carriers.

Liquids must be transported according to the following standards:

  1. Maximum 100 milliliters.
  2. The packaging is transparent.
  3. There is a zip-lock fastener.
  4. One passenger has 1 package.

Cosmetics are best carried in special tubes (containers) with a specified volume. As for medicines, they must be in their original packaging, otherwise they will have to be thrown away. The collected vials are placed at the top of the bag. This will save time if the airport security service asks to show the contents of the luggage.

Rules for carrying liquids on an airplane

The amount of liquid that can be carried in hand luggage on airplanes has been determined international aviation... The established rules are mandatory. All airports in the world are closely monitored by security personnel. This minimizes the likelihood of a terrorist attack.

How much liquid can you take in carry-on baggage?

The majority of airlines have established a restriction, following which it is allowed to carry no more than one liter on board an aircraft. However, this volume should be distributed in 100 ml containers.

It is important to remember that if you fly to the United States of America or Canada, then the maximum bottle size is 90 ml or 3 ounces.

The question of how much liquid can be carried on airplanes in carry-on baggage is always relevant. You cannot take various personal hygiene products and products in packaging that exceeds the established size. This rule applies even if the container is incomplete. If you carry the rest of the cream in a 180 ml jar, it will not be allowed for transportation.

Is it possible to carry water in the baggage of the plane

Passengers are not prohibited from carrying water in the special baggage compartment of the aircraft. You can pack as much liquid in your suitcase as allowed for the purchased ticket. On average, airlines are allowed to transport 20-23 kg of cargo free of charge. If there is an advantage, you will have to pay extra for it.

Water transported in the hold is not hazardous. The passenger does not have access to it during the flight. If a traveler wants to bring home a local mineral water, no one forbids it. Provided that such restrictions are not imposed by the border control services.

Why you can't take water on a plane

Passengers will not be allowed to carry on board the aircraft a volume of liquids in excess of the established rules. This is due to increased security measures for passengers traveling by air. This need arose at the beginning of the 2000s, when the number of terrorist attacks sharply increased.

Since 2006, the countries of the European Union have tightened personal inspection of baggage, and special translucent devices have been installed at airports. Since 2007, identical restrictions have been introduced in the territory of the Russian Federation.

At this time, British specialized services were able to uncover a gang that was planning a fire on several aircraft using liquid bombs. Since explosives in this state are difficult to detect, even with careful inspection, it was decided to restrict the flow of water and other liquids.

To collect your bags when traveling by air should be approached responsibly. If some rules change, this must be indicated on information desks at airports, as well as on the company's official website.

Liquids in baggage

Take liquids in your luggage as much as you can carry (or how much luggage the airline has allowed to carry). The main condition is tightness. The contents of the suitcase should not harm and dirty the belongings of other passengers, even if the container is broken on the road.

Aerosols and cans under pressure must not be brought into carry-on luggage... Put in checked baggage: if you have a cap, the volume of the bottle is less than 500 ml and the weight of all cans is not more than 2 kg.

Liquids in carry-on baggage

If you are flying alone, take a maximum of 1 liter of liquid and jelly-like substances in separate packages of 100 milliliters into the cockpit. We will tell you in detail how to fulfill these restrictions.

How to carry liquid on the plane?

Pack all liquids in containers of 100 ml or 1 deciliter and wrap in one transparent bag. Do not take more containers (even those poured on the bottom), they will not be allowed on the flight. Choose a package with a fastener, but this requirement is not critical. Follow the rule: one passenger - one package.

When flying to the USA and Canada, the permitted volume is slightly less - 90 milliliters (3 ounces).

Pour all liquids into small containers. Where to get them:

  • buy a mini version of your product,
  • keep your hotel miniature shampoos,
  • adapt empty containers, such as cosmetic jars,
  • buy a flight travel kit: cosmetic bag plus tubes.

Pack the bottles:

  • Tie a transparent plastic bag or fix it with an elastic band;
  • buy a stationery bag with a zip fastener;
  • fill in the transparent zippered cosmetic bag.

It will be a plus if the container has a mark in milliliters. Do not overfill medicines, they will be allowed only in the manufacturer's box. Put everything on top of your bag - in case you need to show it at the airport.

Where to buy a bag for liquids on the plane

Such a package is not uncommon. Look for packing bags with a Zip Lock in a stationery store, the size 20x20 cm will suit you, colorless and without a pattern. You will find the same bags in hardware stores.

Choose a clear, riveted or zippered cosmetic bag from a makeup store. In the same place, ask about special travel kits for cosmetics: several empty bottles of 50-100 ml in transparent packaging.
Travel kits in supermarkets and fixed-price stores are also great options.

There is no time to search - take a simple transparent bag or file and put everything in it. Do not tie tightly - when you inspect the bottle, you will be asked to get it, it is better to fix it with an elastic band.

There will be a lot of surprises in this list, so read and remember which substances airlines consider liquid:

  1. food products: canned food, caviar, pate, sauces, soups, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, jelly, jam, preserves, butter, soft cheese, honey, chocolate and peanut butter;
  2. cosmetics and perfumery: perfumes, Eau de Toilette, cream, sun lotion, cosmetic mask, varnish, lipstick and lip gloss, mascara, creamy shadows;
  3. personal hygiene items: toothpaste, roll-on deodorant, shaving foam and lotion, shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, shower gel;
  4. medicines: aerosols, inhalers, sprays, syrups;
  5. drinks: juice, syrup, carbonated drinks, water, alcohol.

That is, everything liquid, pasty, jelly-like, puree-like, gel-like, a mixture of liquid with solid particles of the airline is referred to these rules.

Why you can't take liquids on a plane

Due to the growing terrorist threat and the danger of sabotage on aircraft at the beginning of the 2000s, security measures were strengthened and the requirements for baggage and carry-on luggage of passengers were changed. The impetus was the disclosure of a terrorist cell by the British special services, which intended to detonate a “liquid bomb” on several planes. Due to the difficulty of identifying liquid explosives and flammable substances during inspection, restrictions were introduced on the volume of containers and the amount of liquid per passenger.

In 2006, the countries of the European Union agreed on additional safety regulations for civil aviation, it included strengthening the screening procedure, installing translucent devices and restrictions on the carriage of liquids in carry-on baggage. In 2007, Russia also introduced such rules. During major events, such as the Olympics, a complete ban is imposed on the carriage of liquids in carry-on baggage.

Did you take with you on the flight and put in your hand luggage toothpaste, moisturizer, shaving foam, and other liquids and gels?

Have you made it to the customs control and find out that you are not allowed to carry them with you because you either simply did not pack them correctly, or, worse, collected prohibited items?

You can easily avoid this scenario by following our advice. Transporting liquids on the plane will not give you any problems and you will significantly speed up your way through the security checkpoint.

Three simple rules transportation of liquids in an airplane:

  1. The capacity of the container with liquid should not exceed 100 milligrams
  2. Pack all liquids in a resealable transparent plastic bag, no more than 1 liter (approximate size: 20x20 cm)
  3. Each passenger can take only one package

Things to do before leaving for the airport

Carefully select the liquids, gels and aerosols you need during your flight. In your carry-on baggage, put those liquids that you really need on the plane. Check in the rest as baggage.

REMEMBER! The liquids are:

  • all drinks, including water, coffee, juices
  • liquid and semi-liquid foods such as soup, jam, honey
  • cosmetics and hygiene items, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara
  • sprays including shaving foam, hairspray, deodorants
  • pastes, including toothpaste
  • gels including hair gel, shower gel
  • contact lens solution
  • any other substance of a similar consistency

How to pack liquids for carry-on baggage

STEP 1. Take a transparent plastic bag with a capacity of 1 liter

STEP 2. Find the volume information on the package. It should not exceed 100 ml

STEP 3. Pack them in a zip-lock bag

STEP 4. Zip up the bag and put it in your hand luggage

STEP 5. At the inspection, take out the package and put it in the box along with other small things.

Exceptions

You can take liquids in containers larger than 100 ml if they:

  • intended for medical purposes
  • designed for dietary needs
  • contain baby food or baby milk

ATTENTION!

Airport security officials have the right not to let anything in if they deem it dangerous - even if allowed by carry-on baggage regulations.

Advice

  1. Take only the most essential liquids in your carry-on baggage.
  2. Use containers only with labels. Do not pour a few milliliters of shampoo from a large bottle into an unmarked small bottle. It is a bad idea! If the security officer does not detect the liquid, it will not be allowed on board, you will have to throw it away.
  3. Many people make the mistake of carrying the correct amount of liquid in a larger bottle. Nothing good will come of it! The container must have a capacity of no more than 100 ml.

The rules for carrying liquids on board an aircraft can vary significantly from airport to airport in Russia and abroad. Why? Due to the lack of proper preparation, personal interpretation, or simply the presence of laziness among the security personnel. For this reason, carrying certain liquids in hand luggage can turn into a tape measure.

As a traveler, you can get into an argument when faced with a demand to throw your belongings away. Alternatively, you can simply follow the steps outlined in the article you read.

Agree, traveling light is cheaper and easier than with a large and heavy suitcase. Especially if you have to move from one city to another and visit several places. In this sense, abandoning bulky luggage in favor of light and compact carry-on luggage is the best solution.

Earlier, in the article about, we already talked about what can be considered carry-on baggage. Let me remind you once again that these are things that passengers take with them on the plane for free. But not in any quantity, but within strictly established limits in weight and size, which allow you to place luggage in the aircraft cabin under the seat, on a special luggage rack or in a special locker. It can be a small suitcase, backpack, bag, plastic bag or basket, and all responsibility for the safety of the baggage in this case rests with its owner.

Size and weight of carry-on baggage on the plane

In the Rules air transportation after the amendments were made (order of the Ministry of Transport dated November 5, 2017), the minimum allowance for hand luggage was prescribed for Russian airlines.

Previously, the dimensions of hand luggage and the weight limit were set by the airlines themselves. For some carriers, this norm was just scanty, according to it, it was allowed to take on board only small bags with documents. Under the new rules, a passenger with a ticket (regardless of their fare and flight) can be guaranteed to take at least 5 kg of hand luggage on board for free.

It is impossible to reduce the established minimum of 5 kg, worsening the conditions for passengers, but to increase it if the airlines so wish, please. These parameters are often determined by the policy of the company and depend on its requirements, tariff, route, flight distance.

Most often, Russian carriers have a carry-on baggage weight limit of 10 kg in economy class and 15 kg in business class. Acceptable dimensions - 55 x 40 x 20 cm (for example, in Aeroflot - 55 × 40 × 25 cm). Such dimensions allow you to place things in the cabin without problems, without causing inconvenience to passengers.

There are more varied limits and tolerances for the size and weight of bags (from 5 to 18 kg) allowed for transportation on board foreign carriers. They can be very different from each other.

But it happens that even with cheap tickets, very generous allowances for hand luggage are sometimes provided. Therefore, before buying a ticket, you need to find out what the maximum allowed dimensions and weight are provided for at the selected fare. This information (which is often available in Russian from foreign companies) can be found on the official website of the carrier.

Such preliminary awareness allows you to avoid unpleasant moments at the airport in the form of large surcharges for things that, if the established norms are exceeded, must be checked in luggage on the terms of the carrier, or getting rid of some things urgently. You won't be able to pay extra for extra weight of hand luggage.

It is especially worth paying attention and clarifying with the carrier the conditions for the carriage of hand luggage if there are special bonus programs and for tickets purchased from budget companies. By saving on a cheap ticket, you can later spend a lot more.

And if this is a trip to another country, then you need to know not only the rules of your country, but also the states where you plan to enter.

To help you, we present a table with the allowance for hand luggage in some domestic and foreign airlines.

What can I carry in my carry-on baggage?

In addition to free 5 kilograms, passengers can carry some other things and items with them, also without paying anything for their transportation in the cabin - these are personal belongings of the passenger not packed in a bag / suitcase, the list of which is defined in clause 135 of the Federal Aviation Rules, updated by the Order Ministry of Transport No. 409.

From what was not there before, the new list added backpacks, duty free purchases (albeit with a certain caveat) and medicines to handbags and briefcases.

Also, free of charge in excess of the allowable carry-on baggage allowance is allowed:

  • packed suit - garment bag
  • bouquet of flowers
  • outerwear
  • food for the child in the required amount
  • crutches, stroller, walker, carrycot, folding wheelchair and other items, provided they can be placed under the seat in front of the chair.

But something has disappeared from the new list. These are such necessary gadgets for the traveler as phones, cameras, camcorders, laptops, as well as umbrellas and books. The developers of the law explain this by the fact that all this can be carried free of charge as carry-on luggage (naturally, if they fit into its norm), by removing it in the same briefcase, handbag or backpack. But in fact, this reduces the number of allowed free pounds for other things.

Although, as before, there is a small loophole for passengers. Some of the items that are not taken into account in any way, are not hand luggage or additionally allowed items, can be carried free of charge in the pockets of the passenger's clothes.

Among the innovations: at airports, control over the weight and dimensions of additional items and hand luggage has been strengthened. This is especially true of that part of passengers who use electronic registration... Naturally, such a check is done selectively, for example, if a bag or suitcase raises some doubts about permissible weight or dimensions.

Airline employees can easily weigh hand luggage not only at check-in, but also before the passenger is ready to leave the airport building before boarding, and even at the airport of arrival. Technically, this is not at all difficult to do. If the baggage does not fit into the size control frame, or the scales at the boarding gate show more, then it may not get on board.

According to the new rules, the "carry-on" tag is not attached to passengers' belongings.

Of course, among the things that are delivered to the passenger compartment, there should be nothing that would violate the rules of safe transportation.

What cannot be carried in carry-on baggage?

Safety standards are not always the same. In each country (and even at different airports), in addition to general rules, private norms have been developed. But the differences are mainly in some small details and nuances. Somewhere airport workers will make an exception for some items, while in others they will force them to throw them out unconditionally.

In general, the lists of things allowed and prohibited for carrying in hand luggage are similar. Nevertheless, for your own peace of mind and in order not to be trapped, it is better not to be lazy and get acquainted with the intricacies of carrying hand luggage and baggage in the selected airline.

As for Russian carriers, the basic list of prohibited items is contained in Appendix No. 1 of the Rules for conducting pre-flight and post-flight inspections No. 104 of 25.07.2007. This list is long enough. In short, nothing poisonous, flammable, nothing that can be pricked or cut, no scissors, knives, corkscrews, knitting needles, razors, blades and other potentially dangerous tools, substances and objects.

Some seeds, live plants, soil cannot be imported into the country (the law "On plant quarantine", article 16 is in force). Certain types of pets cannot be transported without the consent of the carrier. It is not recommended to carry dummy weapons on board. And even the child's favorite toy in the form of a pistol is better to put in luggage.

Special rules have been developed for the transport of liquids, food and medicine. Here, in addition to the general rules, there are customs regulations states. And, of course, they need to be clarified.

Rules for carrying liquids in carry-on baggage

This category includes not only drinks and water, but also all kinds of creams, gels, deodorants, sprays, mascara, toothpaste, various oils and paints, lipstick, shaving foam, soups, canned food, jams, soft cheeses, homemade products, honey, caviar, yoghurts, sauce, pate, jelly, cottage cheese, sour cream, drops, ointments and more.

Much of the above can be carried in hand luggage, but subject to a number of conditions:

  • Anything that exceeds a volume of 100 ml must be removed and disposed of.
  • All containers with packed liquid (cosmetics, food, medicine) must be transported in a transparent bag (20 x 20 cm) with a fastener. The total volume of all liquid substances contained in it should not exceed 1 liter.

Obviously, everything that fits into the permitted norm and does not fall on the list of categorically prohibited items or substances can be taken on board. If there are some among them that cannot be carried in hand luggage (excess of 100 ml, nail scissors, nail files and other items), check them in as checked baggage, if there are no obstacles in their transportation in it.

And if the hand luggage is the only baggage of the passenger, then, apparently, you will have to part with something or leave it in the storage room at the airport.

There are also exceptions to the rules for transporting liquids - these are baby food, vital necessary medications and goods (drinks, perfumes, gels) from duty-free shops. They are allowed to be transported in larger volumes.

Duty Free Products

Foods of regular consistency from Duty Free can be eaten on board. As for liquid products (and other liquids - perfumes, alcoholic beverages), it should be borne in mind that when departing from some countries (Russia, EU, Canada, USA, Singapore and others), the package from the duty-free shop of the airport of departure must be transported only sealed and sealed. The same rule applies if there are transfers on the way. You cannot print the package until the passenger has arrived at the destination and left the airport in the city.

If the liquid products were purchased outside the EU in Duty Free, then in the event of a transplant in any of the EU countries, the limitation on the volume of liquid will apply to them.

If this is going abroad, the main rule is to clarify which medications can be brought in, in principle, without violating the customs rules of the country of entry. It happens that some drugs that are freely purchased at their own pharmacy are banned in other countries.

After reviewing the composition of drugs for the presence of prohibited substances in them, the second thing to do is to select those drugs that are required on board. Put the rest in your luggage.

Some aspects of carrying medicines in carry-on baggage:

  • packaging must be original;
  • for some medicines being transported, a prescription is required (a certificate from a doctor);
  • when transporting drugs that contain a psychotropic or narcotic substance, you must take a prescription indicating its name in Latin. Such a medicine is declared when imported into another country (you need to go through customs through the red corridor);
  • medicines in the form of ointments, liquids, gels, creams, syrups, aerosols are transported in containers up to 100 ml. Essential medicines for medical indications if you have a prescription and other documents from a doctor, you can take the required amount.

Carrying food

With regard to domestic flights, you can carry any products, as long as they do not violate the norm in terms of weight and dimensions and general rules transportation of liquids.

If it is international flights(when flying between countries or traveling with transfers), things are not so simple here. The import and export regulations of each visiting country come into effect. Therefore, when planning such a trip, it is necessary not only to familiarize yourself with the rules of export and import at the customs of the Russian Federation, but also to study the requirements of customs control in the country of destination or transfer, which are sometimes very specific.

So, for example, it is not allowed to import dairy and meat products into the EU countries. US Customs does not allow most goods and products from other countries Agriculture... In some countries, there are restrictions on the export of any products.

Some foods are banned due to their strong and unpleasant odor, such as durian. From time to time, fruits, vegetables, dried grass, herbs, nuts, tea, regulated products of animal husbandry and plant growing are banned. There are restrictions on the export of fish, seafood, and caviar from Russia.

In any case, if there are doubts about the legality of the import and export of a particular product from Russia, you can refer to the official source (website of the Federal Customs Service).

  • it is not allowed to bring home products and not in their original packaging;
  • all products belonging to the category of liquid must be transported without breaking the Rules: no more than 100 ml in one package;
  • Strongly smelling foods should be well wrapped in plastic wrap or a sealed bag.

Each carrier sets its own standards for baby food for small passengers, while taking into account that general restrictions on the carriage of liquid products do not apply for babies under 2 years old. Therefore, for this category of children, you can safely take milk, juice, baby food, water in any quantity with you: the main thing is that there is enough for the entire flight, taking into account transfers.

If the flight is long (more than 3 hours), as a rule, you don't have to worry about going hungry. They can feed not even once, but twice. Many carriers offer preschool meals on board, which must be ordered in advance.

However, it will not be superfluous to grab something tasty and favorite for a snack in reasonable quantities. Children (like adults) love to have a snack with dried fruits, fresh fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, cookies, nuts, and chocolate. Everything should be well packed, and vegetables, bread and fruits should be sliced (you cannot use a knife in the cabin of the plane).

This is especially true if the flight is short, takes place on low-cost flights or with tickets at special promotional fares.

It is worth taking care of what to eat for those who require special nutrition (for example, allergy sufferers). Not all flights offer a special menu.

There are always a lot of questions related to the carriage of baggage and hand luggage, and even for experienced travelers... This is partly due to the fact that there is no single document on aviation security that would be applied by airlines around the world. These rules are developed and established by international organizations, laws within each country, airlines and airports.

As for Russian air transportation, many answers can be found in the "General Rules for Air Transportation" dated June 28, 2007, as amended on October 5, 2017 (Order of the Ministry of Transport No. 409).
