Which state do the Canary Islands belong to? Regions of Spain: Canary Islands. The largest carnival in Europe

Which country does the Canary Islands belong to? In ancient times, the archipelago was inhabited by the Guanche tribes, who till the arrival of Europeans cultivated the land and were engaged in cattle breeding. In 1334, the islands were visited by French sailors, and the natives had to make room. According to the laws of that time, all newly discovered lands fell under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican, represented by Pope Clement VI, presented the Canary Islands to Count Alfonso XI, the ruler of Castile, the largest province on the island. For a while, it became clear who owned the Canary Islands. However, Alfonso XI did not know what to do with such a gift. The aborigines did not bring any economic benefits, and on the contrary, the ruler was now obliged to improve life on the islands. The count did not dare to give up the archipelago directly, but he tried, through complicated negotiations, to transfer his ownership into other hands. The question of who owns the Canary Islands is literally hanging in the air.

Who is the owner after all?

It would seem that the answer to the question of which country the Canary Islands belong to lies on the surface. The owner is Spain, but it turned out to be not so simple.

Half a century later, the French decided to seize the islands. Warships followed along the west African coast, which then approached two islands in the center of the archipelago - Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The local population sluggishly resisted the annexation.

In Gran Canaria, French troops celebrated victory a few days later, and in Tenerife it happened a little later. This was followed by periodic landings on the Canary Islands by conquerors of all stripes, from the Moroccan soldiers to the English admiral Robert Blake, who brilliantly spent near the island of Tenerife in 1657, engaging in battle with the Spanish armada. He emerged victorious from this confrontation, but the islands, nevertheless, were ceded to Spain.

After 140 years, the famous Admiral Nelson tried to capture Tenerife, but the capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz, stood in his way, and he was defeated. In the end, the British abandoned their imperial ambitions.

The question of which country the Canary Islands belong to remained unanswered for a long time, until in 1821 the archipelago was finally ceded to Spain. In 1982, the Canary Islands were declared an autonomous region of the Spanish state, and in 1986 the province of the Canary Islands became part of the European Union. Thus, the answer to the question of which country the Canary Islands belong to is now unambiguous. As a result of numerous renaming and status changes, the right decision was made. Today the Canary Islands belong to Spain.

Archipelago today

What is the Canary Islands - a country, a province or some special structure? Geographical position The archipelago speaks of its conditional belonging to mainland Spain, but the islands have full and unconditional autonomy.

The Canary Islands is a country, if we mean the social arrangement and the availability of services necessary for the observance of law and order. These are the police, courts and legal institutions. Although, on the other hand, all these services are practically inactive, since the Canaries are a super-tourism zone, millions of travelers come to the blessed land to relax, have fun and forget about the hardships of civilization for a while. At the same time, no one breaks the laws.

The Canary Islands are located just one hundred kilometers from the African continent and seven hundred kilometers from the coast of Spain. The archipelago adjoins Africa from the northwest (at the junction of Western Sahara and Morocco).

There are only seven large Canary Islands. The closest to the African coast is Lanzarote, the next island is Fuerteventura, then Gran Canaria, behind which are Tenerife, Gomera, La Palma and Hierro. These are the largest volcanic formations, but there are many more minor ones.

The list, which includes the most popular Canary Islands, a map of their location, directions, etc. - all this information can be obtained from the tourist offices of Spain or upon arrival on the island. Tenerife.

The islands are not alike, each of them is attractive in its own way. For example, Lanzarote is ideal for lovers of a calm, measured holiday, while Gran Canaria is a paradise for surfers and divers. For tourists arriving in the Canary Islands, a map and guidebooks will help them navigate in choosing the best vacation spot. There are also hotels for every taste - more expensive, more comfortable, economy class hotels with reasonable prices.

It is difficult to say how many Canary Islands are there in the archipelago, an exact calculation has not been carried out. However, it is known that not all of them are inhabited. At one time, the municipal authorities even opened the sale of small islands. Those who wished could purchase a small piece of land in the ocean at a reasonable price. Trade went briskly until the Spanish authorities on the mainland intervened. The capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was then forced to give part of its powers to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The climate also softens the permanent anticyclone over the Azores, located northwest of the archipelago.

The Canary Islands have been one of the most attractive beach destinations on the planet for many decades. The picturesque archipelago consists of 7 islands of volcanic origin. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean, not far from the northwestern coast of the African continent (the closest to the Canary Islands are Morocco and the western regions of the Sahara). The islands are part of Spain.

Canary Islands on the map

The Canary Islands include not only 7 large and inhabited island formations, but also 6 tiny, practically uninhabited islets. Only one of them - the island of Graciosa with an area of about 30 km 2 - has a population. Roque del Este, Alegranza (area 10 km 2), Roque del Oeste, Lobos (area 6 km 2) and Montaña Clara (area 1 km 2) are real corners of virgin nature. .

Canary Islands on world map

The local climate belongs to the tropical trade wind type and is considered warm and fairly dry. Since the islands are located close to the Sahara Desert, sirocco often blows from there, bringing heat and sandstorms. Most often dry weather prevails on the eastern islands. The rest of the area is dominated by northeasterly trade winds, bringing precipitation and somewhat softening the African heat.

The cold Canary Current off the coast of the archipelago also softens the climate, although it is responsible for reducing the amount of precipitation. Tourists are also attracted by the lack of heat on local beaches... On the most mountainous islands - Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Palma - the weather changes dramatically when descending from the mountains to the coast. If in the coastal zone, even in winter, the thermometer rarely drops below + 10-20 ° С, then on mountain peaks at the same time, a thick layer of snow may lie. In summer, the air temperature is + 20-30 ° С, and the weather is mostly dry and clear. On northern islands more precipitation usually falls than in the south.

Seven large islands of the Canary archipelago

Popular among tourists big islands, among which:

  • Homer;
  • Hierro;
  • Palm;

Tenerife

It is here that you can see the 6 mysterious step pyramids of Guimar, the picturesque nature reserve of Infierno and the ancient Basilica of Candelaria - the largest sanctuary in honor of Our Lady on the islands

Homer

Visitors to the island will be able to visit its capital, San Sebastian de la Gomera, with unique ancient architectural monuments, cross the Garajonay National Park and hear the famous "Gomeric whistle". Due to the rugged terrain of the island, this is how local shepherds talked among themselves through gorges and abysses.

Hierro

Its area is about 280 km 2. The island is considered the smallest inhabited island and is located in the westernmost part of the archipelago. Hierro has an almost alpine relief. From a wide mountain plateau, located at an altitude of almost 1,500 m above sea level, an almost sheer row of rocks descends to the coast. A gentle and comfortable descent leads only to El Golfo Bay.

Palm

Quite a large island with an area of almost 700 km 2. Almost the entire area of Palma is occupied by chains of high volcanoes alternating with laurel and pine forests.

Gran Canaria

The island is the third largest in the archipelago with an area of about 1600 km 2. On it is the second capital of the Canary Islands - the city. The center of Gran Canaria is characterized mainly by a mountainous landscape, which is cut by deep gorges that stretch all the way to the coast. This is one of the most popular tourism centers in the Canary Islands: here guests of the island are provided with all conditions for cycling and water sports, playing golf, exciting hiking trips.

Scientists consider it to be the oldest of the Canary Islands (an area of about 1700 km 2). There are most of the beaches here, and the height of the mountains does not exceed 1000 m, which provides a relatively mild, warm and comfortable climate. Fuerteventura is a popular destination for secluded relaxation and windsurfing.

The area of the island reaches 850 km 2. You should be careful when traveling here, as volcanic eruptions in Lanzarote happen quite often. As a local attraction, the guides show tourists the volcanic cave of Cueva de los Verdes.

In the south of the island, near Las Palmas, there is a narrow sandy strip of beach Las Canteras. It is reliably fenced off by a reef from the sea side, therefore it is completely safe for swimming.

Fuerteventura beaches

They are covered with fine white and golden sand. On the Jandia peninsula are located as a quiet and uncrowded beach Kofete and lively Sotaverno... The beach looks original, where black volcanic sand and fine gravel are mixed.

Canary Islands cuisine

The cuisine on the islands of the archipelago is truly distinctive thanks to the complementary influences of several culinary traditions: Spanish, Latin American (in particular, Venezuelan), African and Canarian Guanches. The local restaurants are definitely worth a try.

The Canary Islands are practically invisible on the world map, but they are popular as a tourist destination. Few people know that the archipelago was formed on the site of volcanoes acting on seabed.

The Canary Islands on the world map resemble a rainbow in their shape, can be seen off the African coast in the Atlantic Ocean, at the same latitude as the Kingdom of Morocco. Despite the proximity to Africa, they belong to Spain. Their total length is about 500 km. 7 large inhabited islands: Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Also, the islands include 6 small ones. The bulk of the population is concentrated in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote was discovered 20 million years ago.

According to another version, dogs were called sea dogs or sea lions, which formed large colonies on the islands.

According to the third version, the aborigines of the Guanche Island considered dogs to be sacred animals. Perhaps there is a relationship between the dog-headed Egyptian deity Anubis and the Canary worship of this animal.
