Bavarian Sea - Chiemsee Lake. Open left menu Chiemsee Lake Chiemsee in bavaria

Chiemseefreshwater lake v Bavaria, Germany, about 70 kilometers east of Munich, between cities Rosenheim and Salzburg... The locals call him "Bavarian Sea". Exactly this large lake Bavaria. It originated from a glacier. The lake is 18 kilometers long, 14 kilometers wide and has an area of 85 square kilometers. Tyrolean rivers flow into the lake Ache and Prien and the river Alz originates in it near the city Zebruck (Seebruck)- a former Roman fortress Bedaium... In the south, the lake is bounded by the remarkable peaks Kampenwand, Hochgern and Hochfelln, and three islands are visible on its mirror-like surface: Herreninsel, Fraueninsel and Krautinsel.
The combination of light and color, which conquered artists and poets, kings and saints, sometimes seems too perfect. Enchanted by this beauty Benedictine nuns back in the 9th century, they decided to establish here monastery. Here lived the Bavarian king Ludwig II, the writers Ludwig Ganghofer and Ludwig Thoma, a whole colony of artists and the fathers of the German constitution. But the Celts and Romans also settled on Chiemsee, who were attracted by the rich reserves of fish.

Islands
The largest island in the lake - Herrenchiemsee an area of 2.4 km 2, on which in 1878 was built famous castle"Fairy king" Ludwig II. New Palace Park (Neues Schloss) resembles its prototype - the Versailles park. The cascades and seven fountains of the garden have been restored.
Monastyrsky Island Frauenchiemsee... Around 766, the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III founded on the island settlement Canoness which is famous Abbess Irmingard, daughter of the king Louis II of Germany, in the IX century turned into Benedictine monastery... Construction began in the 11th century monastery church in the style of high romance. Its octagonal rounded dome rises above the lake to this day. Both islands are accessible all year round by boat trips.
Between the islands of Herenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee is located Krautinsel- most small island of three with an area of 3.5 hectares. There are no residential buildings on it, and it is used exclusively for agricultural purposes. The name of the island comes from the word Kraut, which in German means "tops" or "herbs": in former times, the island was the garden of the Frauenwerth convent. Livestock grazes in the meadows of the island.

Chiemgauer Hausberge do not exceed an altitude of 2000 m. Sontagshorn (Sonntagshorn), the twin mountains Hochfeln and Hochgern, Kampenwand and other peaks are covered with snow only in winter. In the spring and summer, the mountains literally bloom, as, for example, Mount Geigelstein, which is rightfully called "Flower mountain Chiemgau"... Almost any peak can be climbed along good mountain roads. Especially popular hiking trips to high-mountain alpine meadows.

There is hardly another region where so many interesting things are collected in such a small area. Do you want to admire nature, visit reserves, swamps, lakes, discover Chiemgau Alps? Or are you interested in The cultural program? Everything is close by: not only great hiking trails, locks, cable cars but also heated pools or golf courses. Here you can practice horse riding, gliding and paragliding, to ride on raft and hot-air balloon or fly a kite. This area is great for hiking, climbing mountains, trips to walking and mountain biking as well as various water sports... Just as varied and cultural program: from folk and musical holidays or competitions in horse riding before festival of classical and sacred music Musiksommer zwischen Inn und Salzach.

Open for children on Lake Chiemsee Mammoth Museum, which will not leave indifferent parents.

The ideal spas for treatment are Prien am Chiemsee with its healing air and Bad Endorf with thermal waters saturated with iodine.

"Bavarian Sea", one of the most picturesque lakes at the foot of the German Alps, Chiemsee is located just 97 km from Munich. Those who are not greedy for an extra day in the capital of Bavaria and come here (after spending a little over an hour on the way) will get a lot of pleasure: from walks along the lake, and from sightseeing of local attractions and, of course, from swimming in the purest water.

Two main attractions on the lake are also two main islands: Herrenchiemsee, which translates as "Male") and Frauenchiemsee (respectively "Female"). On the first is the graceful Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by the last king of Bavaria Ludwig II in 1878. On the Women's Island there is an ancient monastery of the Benedictine Order in 782.

Another Chiemsee "trick" is a golden cauldron found by an amateur diver in the waters of the lake in 2001. Made of 18K gold, this pot, 50 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height, weighs over 10 kg. Of course, there was some mystery here. The bowler hat looks like it is decorated with a 2000-year-old Celtic coinage, but in fact it turned out to be a modern work of the 20th century, most likely the period of the Third Reich. Why the pot was made and why it was flooded 200 meters from the lake shore near the village of Arlaching is still unknown.

How to get there

The easiest way to arrive at Chiemsee is from Munich, for this it is enough to buy a train ticket (best of all - the so-called "Bavarian travel card", which allows five tourists to travel an unlimited number of times during the day on all railways of the region at once). The destination is Prien am Chiemsee, which takes about an hour to get to.

To get to the islands, look for a pier in Prine, from where steamers start to the main resorts of Chiemsee. You can get from the pier to the station by a funny old train or bus. The sailing time to Herrenchiemsee is 15 minutes.

After arriving at the Herrenchiemsee, immediately buy tickets to the castle; where souvenirs are sold.

Beaches and resorts

The beaches of Chiemsee are created by nature for swimming, and the relief at the bottom of the lake is almost sea. And the shallow sandy entrance to the water allows families to relax here even with the smallest travelers. Fortunately, a lot of equipped beaches are scattered along the entire Chiemsee line: in Prine, where trains come from Munich, and in Rimsting, and in Breitbrunn. In addition, you can find pretty, well-groomed beaches in Gstadt, Gollenshausen, Seebruck and Chieming.

By the way, tourists with children can have a wonderful time at the Prienavera water park in Prine, as well as at the Chiemgau Thermen in Bad Endorf.

While the little ones with the fathers of families will splash on water slides, mothers can relax body and soul in the spa and thermal baths. For example, in one of Prina's clinics, in the Baths of Bad Endorf, in the clinic in Markwartstein. Lymphatic drainage, thalasso programs and all kinds of procedures to maintain the fragile beauty of beautiful ladies in stock and assortment.

Chiemsee attractions and attractions

Once on the Chiemsee, everyone first of all strives to visit the "Male Island" of Herrenchiemsee, where the amazingly beautiful palace of Ludwig II is located. You can get there from the pier in the traditional way - on foot (about half an hour's walk), or in an authentic way - by cart. I don’t want to talk about the palace for a long time - it’s worth visiting, we will discuss the beauties surrounding it. For example, a French park, laid out right in front of the entrance. It is a real pleasure to walk here, especially in summer, when the fountains “Glory” and “Fortuna” work, as well as a copy of the fountain from Versailles “Spring of Latona”. To the right of the Herrenchiemsee is a cozy lawn with a small zoo, where children’s laughter is constantly heard and a crowd of little smart "gnomes" can be seen. The second attraction of the island is the monastery near the pier. And right behind him is always a flock of horses that you can feed. Having completed this program as much as possible (with an inspection of the castle and admiring the horses), it is worth going to the "Women's Island".

Once on the Chiemsee, everyone first of all strives to visit the "Male Island" of Herrenchiemsee, where the amazingly beautiful palace of Ludwig II is located.

Here, as mentioned above, is the ancient Benedictine convent. The first abbess of the monastery was the daughter of King Irmengard, who in 1929 was named the patron saint of Frauenchiemsee.

In the main monastery church, you can find more than one sign of thanks to Saint Irmengarde.

What else is worth exploring while relaxing on Chiemsee? For example, the powerful Hohenashau castle in Aschau (Aschau im Chiemgau) or the Amerang castle in the town of the same name (Amerang). There are also many pretty old temples in the region, for example, the Church of St. James in Urshalling or the Zeeon monastery in the city of Seeon. You can replenish your cultural baggage by visiting one of the surrounding museums: Bedaium Roman Museum in Seeburk, Museum German cars in Ameranga, the Museum of Peasant Life in Ameranga or the Museum of Local Lore in Prine. As a bonus, the nearby Salzburg, Wasserburg am Inn and national park Berchtesgaden with its salt mines and Hitler's summer residence "Eagle's Nest".

Chiemsee- the largest and one of the most picturesque lakes in Bavaria, located at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. For its size local residents it is called the "Bavarian Sea". The lake is located just 90 km east of Munich, and is great place for weekend trips and outings with the whole family.

Previously, we only saw Chiemsee from afar from the Kampenwand panoramic road, heard a lot about its beauty, and finally got here this fall to explore more closely.

How to get there

You can get to Chiemsee by car along the A8 Salzburg autobahn to the town of Prien am Chiemsee. But the best way to get here by train is to buy a "Bayern ticket". The journey takes only an hour. From railway station you will have to walk a couple of kilometers to the lake itself, or, if you're lucky, in the summer this path can be taken by an old train along the narrow-gauge railway passing through Prien to the pier on the lake.

On the way to the lake, you can admire the typical Bavarian houses, decorated with many flowers. We were here at the end of October and it was still blooming.

In Prine, on the shore of the lake, there is a beautiful promenade called Seestraße ("lake street"), which is a pleasure to walk along, especially in the evening with the lights on.

But the most interesting thing about Lake Chiemsee is the islands, which can be reached by small pleasure boats.

Seagulls, circling overhead, reminded of their northern relatives, who also pursued the ship during our recent trip to Solovki.

For those who are fond of yachting, there is complete freedom here.

Islands on Chiemsee

There are two main islands on Lake Chiemsee: Male ( Herreninsel or Herrenchiemsee) and Female ( Fraueninsel or Frauenchiemsee). In principle, you can visit both in one trip, but then it is advisable to arrive early.

The main attraction of the Male Island is the palace built by the Bavarian king Ludwig II, the very lover of palaces and castles who built Neuschwanstein. Since we arrived here late in the day, we decided to skip the Male Island this time and come here sometime again. Yes, in the photo below this is the so-called "old palace", which once served as a male monastery of the Augustinians - for this the island got its name. And the palace of Ludwig II is located in the very center of the island, and it is still half an hour to stomp before it.

Small chapel on the Male Island.

Our main goal on this day was the Women's Island, and it certainly deserves a separate post.

And the final point of the boat route along the lake is the town of Gstadt, located on the north-western bank of the Chiemsee - we did not go there.

In the evening in the sunset rays and the lake and both islands are especially good.

And we were also lucky to get here almost at the full moon, and returning back along the lunar path - sheer romance. (Not us in the photo, but these guys got into the frame very romantic)

Sunset sky over both islands.

We returned to Prien after dark, had dinner in a cafe and went to the station. And in the photo is the same narrow-gauge railway leading to the station, built here more than 120 years ago.

Lake Chiemsee - "Bavarian Sea" at the foot of the German Alps. The lake is 15 km long, 11 km wide, and maximum depth 72 m. Water in summer months warms up to + 23-25 ° С. Every tourist who comes here will have a lot of pleasure from walks along the lake, sightseeing and swimming in clear water.

What to see

Lake Chiemsee, also called Chiemsee or Chim, flows into two rivers: Prien and Tyroller-Aachen. The Alz River flows out of Chiemsee. Therefore, there is not only entertainment and beach holidays, but also water tourism.

On the "Bavarian Sea" there are four large islands and many small ones. The most famous are Herrenchiemsee (Male Island) and Frauenchimsee (Female Island).

On the Women's Island there is an old monastery of the Benedictine Order, erected in 782.

Taking a tour of the lake's surroundings, you can get to know the Hohenaschau Castle - one of the largest castles in Bavaria. It was erected in 1165. The fortress impresses not only with its appearance, but also with its interior decoration.

The walls are decorated with sculptures, knightly armor and numerous paintings. Castle floors connect spiral staircases... The windows offer a breathtaking view. Tourists are trying to capture all these beauties with the help of various gadgets, but no photo can convey the surrounding reality.

Amerang Castle, also located here, was built in the 11th century. The building is known for its Gothic-style chapel, knights' hall and noble chambers.

The Herrenchiemsee Palace, built in 1878 by the last Bavarian king, Ludwig II, stands on the Male Island. The king dreamed of creating his own Versailles in Bavaria. We can say that he did it. The palace, which really looks like Versailles, is surrounded by a luxurious park, where you can find beautiful fountains... In front and behind the palace there are canals connecting the island with the lake.

Walking through the hall of mirrors, which is more spacious and brighter than the original in Versailles, tourists seem to find themselves at a royal ball.

It was assumed that the palace will have 70 rooms, but during the life of the owner, only 20 were equipped, and they are shown during the tour. All rooms amaze with their lush decoration. There is even a swimming pool in the palace.

And the portraits that adorn the walls depict the same person in different outfits - the king Louis XIV who was Ludwig's idol. V winter time most of sights of the palace are mothballed.

Recreation

People come to Lake Chiemsee not only to admire the beautiful nature and fairytale castles, but also to improve their health. Nature itself has made sure that these places are ideal for tourists of all ages and with different needs.

Those who are not in the mood for treatment can enjoy a quality beach holiday.

On the shores of the lake in the towns of Prien, Rimsting and Chieming, wonderful beaches are equipped. They are found in other places as well, but these three are considered the most popular.

Contemplative rest is also provided here. To do this, you just need to get on a boat plying on the water surface. From its deck you can admire the coastal nature and islands of Lake Him. You can even watch the trout that inhabit the calm waters of the lake.

Historic railways are specially equipped for exciting walks.
