The Mediterranean Sea has long been one of the favorite vacation spots for Russians. Antalya is especially popular with our compatriots with its All Inclusive hotels. However, do not forget that this country is also washed by the waters of the Marmara, Black and Aegean Seas. Thanks to this circumstance, there are resorts in Turkey where two seas merge. Marmaris, which is one of them, relatively recently began to be mastered by Russians. This article is devoted to the peculiarities of recreation at the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas.

About Sultan Suleiman and the unlucky builder

Marmaris on the map Ottoman Empire appeared in 1522. The name of the city is associated with the name of Sultan Suleiman, who, according to legend, ordered to hang the architect who built an unprepossessing fortress there, exclaiming: "Mimary as". However, the version that it comes from the Greek word that translates as "Shining" deserves more credibility.

For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that the city on the coast of the bay near the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, which was called Fiskos, appeared at a time when no one had even heard of the Turks. Already by the 11th century BC. NS. he conducted intensive maritime trade with the Mediterranean countries. Later, Fiskos was owned by the Persians, Romans and Byzantines. It was only at the end of the 14th century that it was captured and plundered by the Turks, who, however, took another 3 decades for its final annexation to their empire.

A new impetus to the development of Marmaris was given by the construction of the fortress in the 16th century. The appearance of this defensive structure made trade more secure, which led to the economic prosperity of the city.

In 1789, an English flotilla, led by Lord Nelson, stopped in the bay of Marmaris. For the next century and a half, nothing special happened in the city.

Modern history

In 1957, Marmaris was badly damaged by an earthquake. Oddly enough, this tragic event gave impetus to the development of the city. In particular, when they began to rebuild it, wide avenues, an embankment and modern infrastructure facilities appeared on the map of Marmaris. However, turning these places into modern resort began in the 80s, when many hotels and entertainment establishments appeared there. Thanks to an intensive advertising campaign outside Turkey, tourists from Western Europe began to come there, and in the 2000s the Russian language began to be heard more and more often.

Small village Icmeler is located a few kilometers from the popular Turkish resort of Marmaris. There is a mild climate with a gentle gentle sun and a light sea breeze. Crystal pure water in the Aegean Sea has all shades of blue. The sea is all indented with islands and forms stunningly beautiful and cozy bays with its own unique nature, which you can enjoy endlessly.

The population of Icmeler is about 10,000 people. But during the season it rises to several hundred thousand people. Translated from Turkish Icmeler means "city of springs" or "drinking streams": there are many underground sources, and streams of spring water descend from the mountains into the sea, therefore the water temperature in the Ichmeler Bay throughout the summer does not rise above 26 ° C, and in May-June it does not rise above 20 ° C. For some, this may be too cold, but for amateurs like me, it’s just that!

The entire Icmeler embankment can be walked in 20 minutes. You can also walk along the promenade to Marmaris. The total length of the Marmaris-Icmeler embankment is about 15 km.

Icmeler is especially popular among tourists from Europe (especially the Dutch and the British), who come here primarily because of the silence and clean air. Compared to Marmaris, which is considered the main party center of the coast, Icmeler is really quiet. NS According to the law, all cafes and bars here are obliged to turn off the music at midnight, and there are simply no disco clubs in Icmeler. So at night nothing will prevent you from enjoying the silence while walking along the beautiful streets of Icmeler.

As for the air, it is really unique in Icmeler. Because of him, people come here even in winter - not to swim and sunbathe, but simply to breathe. It is believed that in the winter-spring period (rainy season) the air has the most healing properties. This is facilitated by the abundance of pine forests in the mountains surrounding Icmeler, which begin to bloom in early spring. In addition to pines, there are still many different trees and shrubs, the flowering of which pleases the eye throughout the summer.

Rich vegetable world Icmeler

Stunning pale pink azalea bushes grow throughout the Aegean coast. Very beautiful. Impossible to pass by.

The climate on the Aegean coast is milder compared to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. In summer, the air temperature rarely rises above 35 ° C. Another feature of this region is coastline it is indented with bays and is rich in islets, so the sea is always calm, there are practically no waves.

This view opens from the Rock of Lovers, which is a 20-minute walk from Icmeler. This is one of the few places where you can see the open sea. They say that if, having climbed this rock, make a wish for love, then it will certainly come true. The small island on the left is called Paradise. According to legend, it is the separator of the two seas - the Aegean and the Mediterranean. The geographic border runs somewhere nearby.

One of the bays during a yacht excursion in the Aegean Sea. On the right - wild, but already accustomed to tourists, mountain goats

A standard one-day excursion on a double-deck pleasure yacht to the islands of the Aegean Sea includes six stops in picturesque bays ( somewhere swimming from a yacht, somewhere with access to the shore) and costs 35 USD.

Fishes flock to the bread in flocks. The depth in this place is several meters.

During the excursion, you can meet many local inhabitants, whom tourists are happy to feed - these are fish, mountain goats and even a donkey that lives on one of the islands.

A donkey awaiting the arrival of a yacht with tourists (and, of course, food!) In one of the Aegean islands

The beaches in Icmeler are sand and small pebbles. City beaches are paid. But half an hour's walk from the center of Icmeler there is an excellent, completely free and practically empty wild beach - a great place for lovers of solitude and silence.

Between Icmeler and Marmaris there are four club-type hotels that are open all year round - especially for European tourists who come here in winter and spring for a breath of air. But the majority of Europeans prefer apartments to rest in hotels, of which there are a lot of Icmeler. Some wealthy Europeans come here on their yachts.

So, Icmeler is a mild climate, wonderful nature, clean air and water, peace and quiet. But e If you want an even more relaxing holiday (after all, it is very busy during the season), then choose the town of Turunc, which is located even further from Marmaris, a few kilometers from Icmeler, in a closed bay.
