You ask, why is it that suddenly it is Indonesia? After all, there is China, India, Japan, Nepal ... I agree that there are many more in Asia interesting countries... But there is no such as Indonesia anymore! A huge state with a length of 5000 kilometers, there are more than 17,500 (!!!) islands, which are home to 220 million people speaking a hundred different languages.

Indonesia has a unique geographical position. It connects Asia with Australia, and separates the two oceans - the Pacific and the Indian. This is the reason for the unique biological diversity. In no other country in the world do arboreal marsupial kangaroos and tigers live at the same time. Nobody's waters are teeming with such a variety of fish.

And finally, volcanoes ... Yes, it is because of them that the soil here is so fertile that Indonesians harvest three crops a year, and the island of Java is the most densely populated place on the planet. The population density here is the same as if all Russians were settled in the Tver region. There are more than 150 volcanoes here, and they are still awesome! I think everyone has heard about Krakatoa! And finally, the emerald sea of sandy beaches, dinners for $ 5, and bungalows for $ 10. Do you agree that you SHOULD GO ??

This trip was organized in a very unusual way for me - via the Internet. Getting ready for your first trip on the planned BIG TRIP YEAR Great Journey) I accidentally stumbled upon a cool photo story about a trip to the islands of Indonesia .. Photos of azure the cleanest sea, coconut trees, smiling kids and the simplest fishing shacks, filmed clearly not on digital, and not on film, were forced to leave respect in the traveler's LiveJournal. Almost immediately I received the answer: “This summer I am going again. Let's go together!". This is how I met Serega (http://sergeynovikov.com/). We agreed to write off after my return from a solo trip to Thailand and Laos.

August was approaching inexorably, and we still haven't bought tickets. For a long time, cheap "last-minute" offers were on guard, and as a result, tickets were bought three days before departure! Everything turned out the way we wanted. Tickets were bought "only" for 30 thousand. Seryoga said: "Now we have tickets to paradise!" And away we go ...

After the first experience of swimming among the reefs (it was in Jordan), I realized that it was very cool. And now, for reasons of hygiene, I decided to buy my personal set # 1 (snorkel, mask and fins), as well as special shoes (riffs). In addition, there was a risk that equipment will be rented not everywhere where you want to swim, and it would be sacrilege to waste time looking for them! I bought diving equipment at the diving center of Moscow State University, gave it ... rubles for everything. I also took special "military series" boots for trekking in the jungle from the "non-standard equipment" and a one-time film camera (spared money for digital) for underwater photography.

About the photo. On this journey, I took the "number". No film can be enough for such exoticism, and the colors (my main complaint with the digital) here are such that there is enough for the digital.

"Starting data" by money as of the date of the start of the trip:

  • Cash - $ 654
  • On the card - 27,723 rubles.
  • On the phone - 3876 rubles.

I have broken a big photo story about this cool trip into three parts: a trip to the Java island, the Bali island and the Loboc and Gili islands. Below, as usual, a little useful information for those who liked this idea.

Sights of Indonesia (my opinion)

After almost a month of non-stop travel to the islands of "Central Indonesia" I would say that you need to go here to:

  • Watch volcanoes
  • Dive for fish
  • Learn to surf
  • Meet orangutans and dragons

To say that Indonesia is rich in attractions is to say nothing. Having visited myself, leafing through the guidebooks and talking with the experienced, I would single out the following, the most interesting places country:

Volcanoes:
- Krakatau. The greatest catastrophe in human history
- Rinjani. Beautiful volcano with a lake in the caldera. Near Bali
- Bromo (Bromo). A group of volcanoes, a huge caldera, a temple inside a crater
- Kawa Ijen Boiling, liquid sulfur. Extraction with the help of porters
- Kelimutu. Caldera with colored volcanic lakes

Snorkeling, diving:
- Pulau Veh. The greatest catastrophe in human history
- Banda islands. Absolute idyll
- Komodo. Super Dive Plus Komodo Dragons
- Gili Islands. Perfect place near Bali

Natural National parks:
- Gunung Leuser. Orangutans
- Park Gunung Palung (Gunung Palung). Second orangutan reservation

Architectural monuments:
- Borobudur. Greatest Buddhist Monument
- Prambanan. Hindu temples
- Tana-Lot (Tanah Lot). Balinese temple in the sea

Ethnography:
- Papuans in New Guinea
- the culture of the people in Sulawesi
- Christians-cannibals in Sumatra
- Sumba culture

Relax:
- Kuta. Huge beach and surf waves
- Gili Islands. Three small islands for complete relaxation

Pros of Indonesia

  • huge natural diversity (volcanoes, jungle, underwater world)
  • cheap housing and food

Cons of Indonesia

  • Weak transport infrastructure (almost complete absence of public transport, slow speed of movement on the roads (heavy traffic, frequent stops). Average final speed - 15-20 km / h.
  • Long, expensive and tiring journey (unless of course a direct charter)
  • Absence fresh water on truly wild and interesting islands
  • Not very interesting cuisine, rice with vegetables and chicken and juices, that's all your menu!
  • Not 100% stable political situation. Even terrorist attacks are potentially possible! Before leaving, be sure to study the media (of course, English-speaking)
  • Indonesia stands exactly on the Pacific "belt of fire", and therefore volcanic eruptions and all kinds of tsunamis here occur with enviable regularity. But ... who does not take risks, he does not drink champagne will not see the world!

Visa for Indonesia

Visa to Indonesia is obtained without any problems. Upon arrival, at the airport you pay $ 25 for a monthly visa or $ 10 for a seven-day visa. This closes the question.

When to go to Indonesia

In Indonesia, as in any tropical country, there are two seasons - wet and dry. The best time is the dry season, which lasts from May to October. Peak season is August. The weather is good, but the tourists are crowded. During our trip, most of the hotels were "full", i.e. did not have empty seats. To avoid difficulties with finding accommodation, and most importantly, crowds of tourists in the most interesting places, I advise you to go in September, when traveling European students go home.

Basic facts about the country

Capital - Jakarta (Java island), 9 million people The population of all Indonesia is 230 million people. (the fourth largest in the world after China, India and the USA). Of which 88% are Muslims. The control system is a presidential republic. Independence Day - 17 August. Natural resources: oil, tin, gas, nickel, wood. Main agricultural crops: rice, peanuts, rubber, cocoa, coffee. Major trade and economic partners: Japan, Singapore, USA, China, South Korea, Australia.

Travel safety issues

Basically, we can safely say that it is safe to travel in Indonesia. The people of Southeast Asia are calm, peaceful and smiling. In tourist cities, Europeans are called "mister", or flatteringly "boss", and on the beaches "may friend" or in general "braza" (brother). Cases of attacks or robberies of independently traveling tourists are not known to me. During our trip, we met a lot of young girls, mostly American women, traveling in twos (no guys), or even alone. One girl from Canada who has traveled to many countries around the world said in a conversation that Indonesia is "very safe, compared to many countries in the world, for example Latin America and Africa. ”This seems to be the case.

The only moment with which you need to keep an eye out is the desire to cash in on you as much as possible, which is especially pronounced in places where tourists gather. For example, the term "price tag" is present only in supermarkets. In other cases, the price is called from the ceiling, and usually two or three or even five times higher than what this thing (souvenir) or service (transport) costs. Feel free to offer your price, halving the stated price! Always agree on the price of the trip before getting on the transport and have small bills to give the amount without change. Otherwise, you will be told that "unfortunately, there is no change" :) Many are afraid of the tropics, thinking that everything is teeming with snakes, crocodiles and leeches here. I can declare with full responsibility that this is a delusion. In three weeks of travel, I have not met any of the creatures listed above. I think in wet season There may be problems, but in summer, during the dry season, there are even fewer mosquitoes here than in Moscow.

Someone heard something about malaria, a difficult infection, the disease of which is not easy to cure. In fact, this is not a reason not to go to Indonesia to see the most basic and popular places... Yes, malaria still remains "on the outskirts of the empire", but neither Bali nor Java has it practically. The likelihood of contracting malaria in these places is not higher than the risk of catching tick-borne encephalitis in Russia.

And finally, food. Probably, someone is afraid of the problems caused by the insufficient level of hygiene in the countries of Southeast Asia. To be honest, I once, before my first trip to Asia (Thailand), was afraid of problems caused by dysfunction of the digestive tract. But I will tell you one remarkable thing: in the 50 days that I spent in the countries of Southeast Asia, I have never had a stomach ache. Draw your own conclusions!

However, there are two factors that create the potential danger of traveling in Indonesia: a) theoretically not stable political system with the likelihood of terrorist attacks and natural disasters (volcanoes, tsunamis). But, of course, the chances of getting into such a "scrape" are extremely low, so I decided for myself that because of this, I should not refuse a trip to Indonesia.

transport and logistic

V large cities(Jakarta, Yogyakarta) there are modern city buses (3 thousand rupees or $ 0.3 for a trip around the city) or cycle rickshaws ("bechak", 5000 rupees for a 10-minute trip). But the fastest and most inexpensive option for moving short distances (3-5 km) is a motorcycle (ojack). The driver puts your bag (backpack) between his legs and you rush along the roads like the Indonesians do. Fast, but still potentially unsafe. A 10-minute trip of 5-10 km costs 10,000 rupees ($ 1).

Intercity public transport is poorly developed. There is a railway connection only on the island of Java (there are only seats on the trains), and we have not found a municipal bus connection between the cities. All transportation is carried out by private traders different types transport - from large buses to "minibuses" such as our "Gazelles", here called "bemo" (bemo). They are easiest to find near city markets. The worst thing is that no one will sell you a ticket and you won't find a timetable anywhere. Transport leaves as it fills, and the price of travel for tourists is taken from the ceiling. The only way to pay the "right" price is to know in advance how much this particular move should cost. For reference, I can say that the price in 2008 was in the region of 20 thousand rupees for a 2-hour drive. You can travel between the islands by ferry (very cheap and very long) or by plane (convenient, fast, about $ 35-40 for a flight from Bali to Lombok). Domestic flights are operated by more than ten airlines, the planes are small, and flights are often canceled or delayed. Do not plan multiple connecting flights to the butt, without headroom for complications.

Traveling on the roads

I advise you to ditch the idea of getting around Indonesia on a rented motorcycle or scooter ($ 5 per day). Left-hand traffic, wild Asian traffic, all of this is a serious danger. The car may be safer, but harder to find. Personally, I have found for myself the best option for exploring the immediate vicinity - a bicycle. You can ride it on the sidewalks, climb into the wilderness, where you can tie it with a special cable lock, which is always included in the kit, and you can find rental bikes everywhere. The price is about $ 2 per day.

Food, nutritional issues

The cuisine in Indonesia is simple and unobtrusive. The main foods are rice, chicken, eggs, fruits. The main "folk" dishes are Nosi Goreng (rice fried with vegetables) and Sate Ayam (rice with small chicken skewers). For breakfast, banana pancake, beer - Bintang. An average lunch - rice with meat and vegetables, soup, juice and tea with a banana pancake - in an inexpensive cafe will cost you 50-60 thousand rupees ($ 5- $ 6).

Religion

Despite the fact that almost all of Indonesia with the exception of Bali is Muslim, this does not cause problems. Religiousness here is manifested for the most part only in the fact that you cannot order pork for dinner, and women wear headscarves. Beer, for example, is sold everywhere, and the morning calls of the muezzin, which were so received in Jordan, are barely audible, and then only in large cities. Men do not wear dresses, women do not wear burqas. Bali is a separate topic altogether. Historically, back in the 14th century, Hindus fled to this small island from the Muslim expansion. And now Indonesia is completely different here. With a cult of monkey worship and mega-tourist infrastructure.

A Brief History of Indonesia

From 1st to 5th century AD under the influence of India, Indonesia became Hindu Buddhist. Then, in the 13th century, Islam penetrated the country through Arab traders and drove the Hindu elite to the island of Bali.
The first Europeans (Portuguese) sailed to Indonesia in 1509 and began the spice trade of the Moluccas. While the British explore Malaysia, and the Spaniards the Philippines, the Dutch set about Indonesia. Within 10 years, 65 ships with spices were sent to Europe, which made a splash in Europe. The Dutch held out in Indonesian until 1953, when the country, led by Sukarno, gained independence. The movement he founded under the slogan "One people one Language One Nation" finally united the nation.

List of things to travel

Its own sheet and bedspread. In cheap bungalows, the linen is not changed, and in principle there are no bedspreads and blankets. Despite the hot climate, it gets cool in the morning.
- slippers-reefs. Very often approaches to reefs are hampered by small rocks and broken corals. It is best to buy special neoprene slippers to overcome such shallow waters, which are sold in diving shops. If you have limited luggage, you can get by with regular sandals. Just pay attention that the heel is fixed in them, otherwise you risk losing them in the water.

Our travel itinerary

Java island

Java is main island country and wildly populated. The capital of the island (and country) is Jakarta. A city of contrasts, like everyone else Asian cities... In my opinion, there is nothing to do in Jakarta, except for shopping in the city center, where there are modern shopping centers.
We left Jakarta as soon as we flew into it. Since we were traveling to Yogyakarta (near this city, the famous Borobudur), we went straight from the airport to Train Station... Comfortable buses run from the airport to the station every half an hour. The ticket price is only $ 2.
Trains to Joju leave in the evening, after eight o'clock. We arrived at the station at five o'clock, stood in a huge queue and bought tickets for sit-down car(they don't have coupes and reserved seats in our understanding).
The train arrives in Yogyakarta at about five in the morning. Yogyakarta itself is a decent city. Everything is there - both shops and the Internet. I even managed to find a good Nikon lens there in a couple of hours.
Excursions to Borobudur usually start early in the morning to meet the sunrise there.
In the evening you can go to the Bromo volcano - this is the most interesting thing in Java. The easiest way is to buy a tour at the tour office in Yogyakarta. Then you and other tourists will be taken to the volcano during the day, and the first half of the next day you will be in Bromo. In the evening you can reach another interesting volcano - Kava Ijen. Watch it in the morning, and in the evening you reach the ferry in Bali, an hour by ferry and that's it, you are in Bali!

Bali island

To be honest, Bali I liked the least of the places where we have been. The dive here is worse than on Gili. In my opinion, Bali, compared to the rest of Indonesia, has only two advantages - cheap and waves. Cheap, because you can buy a "ticket" with a direct charter in Kuta (Bali's main beach) cheap food and housing. Waves - because Indian Ocean... They say - here is one of best places for learning to surf. But be careful. Waves are very dangerous for simple swimming. Very! In Bali, we visited four towns - Lavina, Amed (Dzhimilyuk), Kuta and Ubud. You can read about each place in more detail in Lonely Planet, without it anywhere. I will only note interesting places and proven inexpensive bungalows.

Kuta, Bali
Cheap overnight stay:
Suka Beach Inn
Coordinates: S08 ° 42 "57" E115 ° 10 "20"

Cheap food:
$ 3 for a hearty lunch
Coordinates: S08 ° 43 "10" E115 ° 10 "25"

Avalanche
There are three main attractions in the vicinity - a sea excursion to the dolphins, warm springs (with bars and cafes, everything is civilian) and a waterfall (drying up in summer). In general, in my opinion, there is not much to do here, especially with a limited amount of time. The beach is black volcanic sand, there are no reefs, corals and fish.

Amed and Dzhimilyuk
The place is located on the northeastern coast of Bali. The guide says it has one of the best "coral gardens" for snorkelling. In fact - so-so. The Gili Islands are much better. But for a change, you can go.
For accommodation I recommend the "Good Karma" bungalow with an awesome beach surrounded by rocks and "Blue Divers" in Dzhimilyuk (the best corals), where you can take a diving trip (one day - $ 40)

Ubud
I advise one super-duper place surrounded by rice fields and with very tasty cuisine:
"Lala & Lili Hotel"
Coordinates: S08 ° 30.194 "E115 ° 15.089"

Lombok island, Rinjani volcano

You can get to the island of Lombok in two ways - by plane from Kuta (Bali) or Jakarta, or by ferry from Bali. The plane from Kuta takes only 20 minutes and costs $ 40. This is the most quick way... If you want to save thirty dollars, but lose a day of time, you can take a ferry. We flew by plane. And I think this is correct.

The capital of Lombok - the city of Mataram - is a terrible hole. There is absolutely nothing to do. Better to immediately blow either to the Gili Islands (an hour's drive to the ferry and 15 minutes by boat to paradise islands) or take a taxi (or take public transport) to the village of Senaru, which is located at the foot of the Rinjani volcano. You have two ways to go to Rinjani - buy a tour or go yourself. Tours are expensive. The official price is $ 100 for a two-day trekking with porters. We walked on our own. The trail there is good, and for safety reasons I had the coordinates of five main points on the trail. Here they are:

Tourist office - S08 ° 18.189 "E116 ° 24.056
The gate to the nat. park - S08 ° 19.180 E116 ° 24.133 "
Parking 1 - S08 ° 19.705 "E116 ° 24.113"
Station 2 - S08 ° 20.936 "E116 ° 23.721"
Parking 3 - S08 ° 22.155 "E116 ° 23.960"
Crater edge - S08 ° 22.742 E116 ° 24.081 "

Mataram, Lombok
Hotel "Puri Indah". There is fresh water, air conditioning, TV and a nice pool. A very decent place.
Coordinates: S08 ° 35.623 "E116 ° 07.184"

Gili Air Island

Tiny islands with sandy beaches and coral reefs are located near Lombok Island, directly adjacent to Bali. The trick of the islands is that petrol transport is prohibited on them. You can only move around (just to bring heavy bags to the hotel) on horse-drawn carriages. You can get to Gili either directly from Kuta by speed boat ($ 70, 2 hours from the port) or by plane or ferry to Lombok Island ($ 40), and then 15 minutes by boat.

A cheap boat (public boat) departs from the pier on the island. Lombok is only twice a day - in the morning and at lunchtime. But it costs only $ 1, instead of $ 20 for an individual "charter" to the island. Be careful! On the approaches to the pier from the side of Lombok, there are several scammers who sell fake tickets !! Buy a ticket in the civilian building of the port, which is located on the very shore!

The most serious drawback of the Gili Islands is that they do not have fresh water. Drinking bottled of course is for sale, but the shower in the bungalow is from sea water. In principle, they defend the water, and it is quite normal to rinse with it. It just doesn't wash well.

The Gili Islands themselves consist of three islands- Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. The last one is noisier and with the most beautiful corals, the second one is quite a hole. I advise you the quiet and unique in its own way Gili Air. The place is very quiet, diving from the beach, there is a dive club, internet and a stall with basic household goods.

You can stay at Lombok Indan. Inexpensive, quiet, tranquil bungalow 10 minutes walk from central beach a. In August 2008 we found a bungalow with two beds, fan (not used) and mandi for $ 12 a day (bargaining from the originally stated $ 15).
Coordinates: S08 ° 21.048 "E116 ° 05.056"

For those who need a higher service, I can recommend the only place that is truly hotel class. Located right next to the central beach, there is a swimming pool, etc.
Hotel Sun Rise, tel. 0370 642370
Coordinates: S08 ° 21.775 "E116 ° 05.246"

Diving, snorkeling:
Blue Marlin Dive is the main diving site. Equipment rental (fins, mask and snorkel for $ 2.5 per day), diving and snorkeling tours ($ 8 for half a day, four dives at all three Gili Islands), training (including in the pool), European (English speaking) instructors. There are no Russian speakers.
Coordinates: S08 ° 21.207 "E116 ° 05.205"

Of the many cafes on the beach, our favorite was "Wiwin Cafe" at the northern end of the central beach. Medium dish with fish, vegetables and rice - $ 4, nosi-goreng special - $ 3, 05l beer - $ 2, juice - $ 1.
Coordinates: S08 ° 21.606 "E116 ° 05.244"

Well, with Indonesia, perhaps everything!

You may be interested in my other travels in Asia. In addition to Indonesia, my friends and I traveled around Nepal for more than a month, we walked tracks to base camp Everest and Annapurna, and even for four days ended up in the mysterious kingdom of Bhutan! Actually, my acquaintance with Southeast Asia began with

Independent travel implies complete freedom in the choice of housing, excursions, entertainment. Those who are unwilling to pay travel companies extra money for taking the guide literally by the hand to the most popular attractions, but wants to get to know the customs of the local population and just loves free time, usually they travel on their own, buying plane tickets and packing everything they need in a suitcase. What to take with you to Indonesia? Indonesia is a country with a very developed infrastructure, with many shops and hypermarkets, where you can buy something that you forget to take with you from home, for example, a hat to protect your head from the hot sun rays, a swimsuit, glasses and beach shoes. If you are planning to visit the temples, please bring modest clothes that cover your knees. On excursions to the jungle, insect repellent can come in handy. It is irrational to take a wallet with a thick wad of cash: there are many ATMs and bank branches in the country. A thick bag with medicines for all types of diseases will not be needed: in any locality pharmacy points were opened, where they offer patented international-class drugs. How to get to Indonesia The best way to get to Indonesia is by plane. It is as fast, safe and convenient as possible. Direct flights from Russia are only charter flights, they rarely fly and not from all cities. You can fly with a connection using the services of Thai Airways, Transaero, Emirates Airlines. From the capitals of the states of Southeast Asia and the countries of the Persian Gulf, there are many daily flights to Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia) and the island of Bali. When planning a flight, it is worth making sure that the date of arrival at the airport in Indonesia does not fall on the days when the country passes the Day of Silence, or Nyepi, (roads are closed, and airports only accept emergency landing aircraft).
Visa regime A nice aspect of traveling to Indonesia on your own is that a tourist visa is issued upon arrival at the airport. It is enough just to pay a fee of twenty-five dollars, present documents (passport with a validity of more than six months, tickets to your home country or to a third country, confirmation of hotel reservation or proof of availability Money) and enjoy the rest for thirty days. Children under nine years of age do not need a visa and fee. After the expiration of the visa, a one-time extension is allowed for another 30 days. To do this, you need to contact the police (department for foreigners). The best time to relax All islands in Indonesia have an equatorial monsoon climate, which implies a small temperature drop and the presence of only two seasons - dry and rainy. From May to the end of October, the least rainfall and the most sunny days. It was during this period that an influx of tourists was noted in Indonesia. Next peak tourist season- New Year and Christmas holidays. However, in the rainy season, precipitation does not bother around the clock, but periodically, in the afternoon. This does not interfere with sunbathing, swimming and walking in wet sandy beaches surfing and diving.
Food and lodging Both in the capital and on the islands there are many inexpensive hotels and guesthouses. The simplest ones are small rooms with a bed and a fan. Hotels with the maximum level of comfort, swimming pools, restaurants and other services (nanny, massage parlors, SPA) have been built for those wishing to have a luxurious vacation. When checking in, pay attention to the availability of amenities and air conditioning (fan), wi-fi, cleanliness in the room. The food is quite varied, the local cuisine is dominated by rice, seafood, meat, fruits, a huge variety of desserts. A distinctive feature is the use of a large number of spices. Pork is practically not eaten, since the majority of the indigenous population is Muslim.
Transport All islands are connected by air and sea. Private traders who operate on any route offer their transportation services. In cities and between them, traffic is left-hand. Renting a car is not recommended as traffic is busy, road conditions are often poor, and some road signs are written in Malay. It is much more pleasant to use the services of a taxi, bus or minibus. There are railways, but communication is poorly developed. In addition to cars, bicycles and motorcycles are available for rent. Things to do in Indonesia Diving The most curious tourists travel to Indonesia specifically to admire the underwater beauty while diving. Divers from all over the world come here, both experienced and those who are just planning to learn to dive with an instructor.
Surfing Indonesia, in particular the island of Bali, is very popular with surfers. These latitudes are believed to have the best waves and beginner schools. Fishing It is very pleasant to sit with a fishing rod on a comfortable yacht. The hook includes tuna, marlin, snapper, barracuda, swordfish and other exotic marine life. Excursions At their choice, tourists can go to the jungle, conquer one of mountain peaks, or go rafting on the Ayung mountain river. A sea of adrenaline and unforgettable impressions of the beauty of the local nature are guaranteed. Wellness In the SPA-centers, tourists are offered massage and health-improving activities based on national recipes. Here you can try the wrapping procedure, order a complex aimed at getting rid of excess weight and many other, no less pleasant, procedures. Holidays and festivals Tourists who arrive in Indonesia on the eve of the holidays will certainly find colorful processions, amazing contests, fairs and a sea of happy and contented Indonesians on the streets giving alms and singing songs.
Parks On the territory of Indonesia, there are several natural parks with animals and plants inhabiting them, which can be viewed, fed and photographed. For amateurs of attractions, huge amusement parks and a water park have been built. In the dolphinarium, you can swim with these cute mammals. And to see a huge number of fish without plunging into the water, the oceanarium offers. In addition, there are many bars, casinos and nightclubs, including outdoor areas where fire shows are held.
Traveling on your own, you yourself choose your program, entertainment and place of residence. After getting to know the local culture, attending a holiday or festival and seeing with your own eyes the beauty of temples, nature and beaches, it may turn out that one month spent in Indonesia is not enough, and you want to extend your exciting stay in this exotic country.

Visa for Indonesia

If you are going to have a rest in Indonesia, first of all, you must resolve the issue with a visa. Depending on how long you plan to stay there, the methods of paperwork will also vary. We are going to Indonesia for a short time. Visa on arrival So, if you are traveling to Indonesia for a period not exceeding 30 days, then there is no need to apply for a visa in advance - you will receive it upon arrival. VoA (visa on arrival), or visa on arrival, you will be delivered at any major airport countries (in the cities of Jakarta in Java, Yogyakarta, Denpasar in Bali, Padang, Makassar, Manado and Solo in Sulawesi, Medan in Sumatra, Kulang and Surabaya, and on the island of Lombok, in seaports and at land border posts.

Climate in Indonesia

Thanks to its geographic location Indonesia attracts tourists all year round. You can safely come here at any time and be sure that the weather will not spoil your vacation. Features of the climate in Indonesia There are two climates in the country: equatorial and subequatorial, on which the differences in weather conditions v different parts Indonesia. So, in the southern and eastern islands you will find the division into two opposite seasons, usual for many countries of the region: dry and rainy seasons.

Transport in Indonesia

A beautiful exotic state, attracting both the luxury of hotels and a variety of entertainment, and active rest- all this is Indonesia. Among the many islands, there are those that tourists from all over the world love the most - Bali, Java, Sumatra and others. According to one of the legends, the island of Bali was created by the gods, and later generously donated to mortals. Today everyone who wants to relax like a real god, by air or by sea, can comfortably get to any of the resorts in Indonesia, which, by the way, do not differ in democratic prices.

Indonesia is seventeen thousand islands, at first it is impossible to cover or even understand.

Even after a two-week journey through the island state of Indonesia, flying, moving from island to island on speedboats, water taxis (medicines for seasickness will not be superfluous), it is difficult to imagine such an incredible number of islands:

"We visited six islands, each very different from the others ... and there are 17,000 others?"

Combined with the cultural experience of this daunting vast yet hospitable archipelago. Languages, religions and social norms vary considerably from village to village, from city to city, from beach to beach, but they all coexist under Indonesia's magically idealistic slogan, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" - "Unity in Diversity".

When people talk about going to Indonesia, the vast majority of them are actually talking about traveling to the island of Bali, which, while attracting an incredible number of tourists, is one of the most famous, most visited tropical resorts in the world, and for good reason. If you are planning a trip to Indonesia, your itinerary must include Bali.

This is why this travel guide - five must-see places in Indonesia - focuses on the island of Bali. Thanks to the international airport, travel is much easier. Its proximity to East Java, Lombok and Gilis Java, Lombok and the Gilis Islands makes it a good regional travel destination and will suit any type of tourist, from honeymooners staying at the Intercontinental to backpackers living for $ 15 a day.

Despite the fact that there are tens of thousands of truly amazing temples, beaches, amazing villages to visit in Bali, we settled on five of them that we recommend (all prices are in US dollars).

1. Cultural Capital of Java: Jogyakarta

Yes, this is a huge, annoying, noisy city - but here life flows at a special speed that differs from other places on the island of Java, besides, the cultural wealth of Jogyarta will shock any traveler.

If you've just landed in Southeast Asia, don't go overboard on your first day. You can find a wonderful bungalow with a pool for less than $ 20 - I would recommend Delta Homestay, which is located away from the bustling streets of Pravirotaman in a quiet valley. Get out for a walk and grab something to eat: start at Via Via, a tourist-friendly restaurant (also local gift shop, travel agency and hotel, yoga studio), one of the best spots in Yogya.

On the second day, head to Kraton, the Sultan's palace.

If you are near Kraton, check in the souvenir shop about them to the temple, it is thanks to them that Jogya becomes really fun. The important Buddhist temple of Borobudur and the amazing Hindu temple of Prambanan are outside the city limits, each of them should be devoted to a full day - although this can be done in one day if you start in the early morning and stick to a busy schedule.

Movement: Long distance walks in Jogyakarta can be extremely tiring given the condition of the sidewalks and the amount of traffic on the roads. In this case, use a backak (rickshaw bike), but for longer distances it will be helpful to take a taxi or rent a scooter.

2. Art Village in Bali: Ubud

Don't linger on Ubud's glamorous, somewhat commercial, main street - there are plenty of places to visit in this fun, relaxing art village in Bali. To your attention - numerous bars and restaurants, souvenir shops and spas - feel how this village differs from Yogya.

Undoubtedly, it is smaller. Hinduism prevails here, as elsewhere, in contrast to most of Indonesia, where Islam is widespread, however, both cultures and religions are beautiful in their own way, filled with historical vivid and varied events and stories. Just walking down the street will tell you the difference between the two.

Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Reserve - a popular place among tourists where monkeys are everywhere - macaques, to be precise, if you offer them a banana, they will happily sit on your shoulder, they can easily steal your sunglasses, easily gliding through the trees. However, based on the fact that all American doctors will recommend that you beware of animals carrying rabies during your stay in Indonesia, a close encounter with monkeys is not the most reasonable decision.

Make sure to set aside time for massage, yoga classes and elephants throughout your time in Ubud - it's just a must in this relaxed environment, right? Visit the Yoga Barn for yoga classes; from the very beginning, the village is a contact fair where you can meet like-minded travelers from all over the world.

You should spend a day outside the city, for example, river rafting will be extremely exciting, it is just incredible - a wild adventure, after which you will certainly taste Bintang - the most popular beer in Indonesia.

Movement: You can walk all of Ubud, however for regional excursions you will need a taxi or shuttle. If you signed up for motorcycle riding, rafting and similar activities, transportation is usually included in the ticket price.

3. Secluded Paradise: Gili Trawangan

If you've always dreamed of visiting a secluded island, try Gilis, three islands located between Bali and Lombok, catering to all tastes and any budget.

Gili Meno is a hot, quiet, abandoned island. Gili Air is a functional, luxurious island with pleasant nature, Gili Trawangan is the big, well-developed brother of these islands.

It is very easy to get confused when choosing one of the Gili islands, for a start, just choose and visit one of them. If you wish to relocate to another island, it is very easy to do so thanks to the white sand beach paths.

Then we move to Gili Trawangan, as according to the reviews of tourists, this place is an amazing combination of solitude and nightlife... And indeed, having driven along the fussy east coast islands, we found hippie hostels and five-star resorts, dilapidated food markets and gourmet waterfront restaurants.

There are no cars on the islands, and pedestrian traffic on Gili T combines hard workers from local residents and Australian bums. Accommodation and food are more sophisticated and expensive in the southeastern part of the island. The northeastern part is cheaper and simpler - it is also good to go snorkeling here.

You can rent scooters and look for yoga studios, but people come to these islands to go diving. If you do not have a certificate, dozens of schools are ready to provide you with their wide range of programs. If snorkeling is your preference, most of guys on the road will be happy to rent you a mask and show you the way to the turtles.

By the way, turtles.

If you ask me what was the most memorable during the trip to the Gili Islands, I will gladly say that it was meeting a couple from New Zealand and chatting with them for three out of four days, sipping a mojito, listening to local rastamans playing a cover - Pink Floyd versions on their sand acoustic guitars, snorkeling at dusk as we swam deep into the corals and looked for wild turtles to gnaw on delicious coral.

Movement: There are no cars here, so you will be walking everywhere. If you are in a hurry (but why should you hurry?), Stop the donkey cart.

4. Beachpartyon theBali: Kuta

For many, Kuta is Bali, for others Kuta is tourism, and from the worst ego side.

Lest you think, tourism in Bali is concentrated in Kuta, which has helped put surfing in Asia at the top. And not strange, delightful waves, and thousands of tourists walking along the legendary white sand Kuta every day, get lost in surfing, plastic flex chairs, sunsets.

People who like to share high-end shops bordering shops in crowded streets with people and cars will leave Kuta immediately. Everyone else will be able to enjoy the variety from the suffocating urban norms.

If Kuta is too active for you, try Lijin. If that still doesn't suit you, head north to Seminyak - a quieter and less congested place than Kuta, which is also home to the excellent Queen's Tandoor Indian restaurant.

Considering a large number of tourists in Kuta, the prices are appropriate. We spent one night at the Bali Bungalo, which is a quiet, relatively cheap ($ 50 per night) hotel, with no frills, awful A / Cs and a blockage walk to the beach. General services such as scooter rentals or meals are also available here. In terms of food, by visiting the Kuta Night Market, you can find the cheapest nasi goreng in town.

Movement: short distances: walk along the beach, especially during sunset, for longer distances - rent a bike, renting a scooter is more practical - as little as $ 5 per day and may include renting a surfboard for traveling along the coast.

5. Temple on the rock: Ulu Watu

From the frantic mania of Kuta to the lush splendor of Ulu Watu, that's where Indonesia ends. This southeast coast of Bali is particularly attractive and its high cliffs - in most cases with steep descents to popular yarns - separates it from the big brothers to the north.

Here life goes on at different rates. It's okay if you get up at 11 o'clock in your Pink Coco Bali bungalow and don't leave its tempting pool until 2 o'clock. Hop on your scooter for a midday surf at Padang Padang Beach - admire the beauty of a humble Hindu temple on your way to the beach.

After a light bite and cold bintang at Padang Padang, head to Pura Lahur Ulu Watu at sunset. Pay to enter, put on a sarong (provided and required at temples in Bali) and proceed to the next ticket office near the cliffs. With this ticket, you will have access to the Ketsak night dance ceremony (sunset, 365 days a year), filled with theatrical scenes and of cultural and historical significance.

The temple is important place for Indonesian Hindus, it is also a place for wonderful photos, as the Indian Ocean and sunset provide a theatrical, often changing backdrop.

Island expectations from Indonesia

Jogyakarta, Java: Adisucipto International Airport allows travelers to completely escape the crazy capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. Most flights from the US connect to Indonesia via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and there are direct flights from both of these cities to Yogyakarta - recommended unless you're flying to Yogyakarta for work.

Ubud, Bali: in Java, budget travelers can choose extreme hiking-hop-hop-hop-hop-hop hop-off tours from Jakyakarta to Ubud. People on a large budget can pay less than $ 50 for a flight from Yogyakarta to Denpasar (Bali), while others can pay $ 15- $ 25 for a taxi to Ubud.

Gili Islands: A variety of companies throughout the area offer boat services from Lombok to the Gili Islands. Find and buy yourself a package at a suitable price and with an appropriate schedule. The hour-long crossing from Ubud to the port city of Padang Bai is easy, even on a crowded bus with faulty air conditioning. The ship from Padang Bai to the Gili Islands, via Lombok, is a beautiful journey with frequent changes in direction. Ask the boat crew if you can sit higher to get plenty of fresh air, sun and sudden splashes of salt water.

Kuta, Bali: if coming from Gili Trawangan, take the boat via Padang Bai (3 hours from Kut) or Sanur (30 minutes from Kut). Kuta also lies less than half an hour from international airport Ngurah Rai, or Denpasar, is the only airport on the island and the second most visited airport in Indonesia.

Ulu Watu, Bali: there are quite a few cheap shuttles and even cheaper public buses from Kuta, most of which stop at Ulu Vatu (ask driver). For those who like to travel on two wheels, it is possible to rent a scooter in Kuta and ride it - just avoid the post-ceremonial traffic congestion in the northern part (towards Kuta) unless you are brave enough.

So. The idea to go to Indonesia came after a thorough analysis of the weather in August-September in the countries of Southeast Asia. In general, we very, very much advise everyone! After all, life is one, you have to have time to see everything!)
