Climate

Sardinia has a mostly Mediterranean climate. This is due to the close proximity to the Gulf of Genoa (barometric) and the low relative proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Sardinia, being relatively large and hilly, has different weather conditions in different areas; in particular, the East is drier, but paradoxically suffers from heavy rainfall: in the fall of 2009, it rained over 200 mm (8 inches) in one day in Sinishola. The west coast is rainy even for modest heights (eg Iglesias, height 200 m, average annual precipitation is 815 mm versus 750 mm for London).

  • Summers are dry with very warm weather. However, unlike the islands of Greece, for example, it is quite windy at this time of the year.
  • Autumn can be light until mid-November, but subject to heavy rainfall, as noted above.
  • Winters are usually mild in the plains, but very cold in the higher elevations.
  • Spring is mild and rainy, but not like autumn. The island is very windy, especially from September to April (the local north-westerly winds are called Mistral); to the southeast (Shirokko) winds are frequent during the summer and bring invariably hot weather.

Bose is of interest with its medieval urbanism; Burgos (Castle of Goceano) is also worth a visit for historical exploration. The island has several small churches from early Christian times to the Baroque era, in the aforementioned cities, but also in Porto Torres and Iglesias (Spanish for church).

Examples of industrial architecture can also be found around the city of Cagliari, in Porto Torres, and in the Sulcis Iglesiente area, where organized tours can be booked to visit the mine, such as the Buggeru Mine with galleries above sea level. Finally, there are several museums dedicated to Sardinia. • Porkeddo is a national dish in Sardinia, it is a wood-fired pig roasted in a special way with an aromatic local shrub called Myrto.
  • Sausages of many types, for example Salsiccia di cinghiale (wild boar sausage).

Spices (such as thyme, rosemary, fennel) can be found in abundance.

  • Seada (square Seadas or Sebadas), a typical Barbagé, is a dessert similar to ravioli, only filled with fresh cheese and lemon rind that melts when cooked. Served fried with honey.

Holidays

Folklore

On the island of Sardinia, entertainment is fueled by strong national traditions that are expressed through celebrations and local dress. Quite often, even in small centers, local festivals take place, where people dress in rich traditional costumes. However, it is easier than coming to large venues, as there is a significant influx of people from all over Sardinia. Not full list includes: Sant 'Efisio (Cagliari, May 1st, actually lasts for several days), Sagra del Redentore (Nuoro, last Sunday in August), Cavalcata Sarda (Sassari, penultimate Sunday in May,), Faradda Di Li candareri (Sassari , 14 August), Sat Sartiglia (Oristano, carnival period, horse racing), and celebrations during Carnival and Holy Week.

Safety. What to watch out for

A few basic precautions are enough to keep you out of trouble, especially in summer and fall.

On the island of Sardinia, security is quite deceiving - since the island is sparsely populated, help is not always easy to find, there are even areas where the mobile network does not catch (for example, in the lower part of river valleys). The terrain despite the absence high heights usually cool. This, combined with the heat and lack of water, can quickly lead to disaster. Carefully!

Summers are generally hot and the sun is strong enough to take the usual precautions to avoid heatstroke and sunburn. Always take plenty of water with you (especially when you go hiking), even if you plan to short trip,; bring fresh juicy fruits (such as peaches) with you. Tap water is generally safe, but can be bought mineral water in bottles.

Sardinia differs from Sicily and the Italian mainland in that it is not prone to earthquakes.

Autumn is good here, but the idyll can be disrupted by heavy rainfall in the hilly terrain, creating the opportunity for mud slides. Always check the weather forecast before planning your trip, even on own car... Winter and spring are generally safer, with pleasant warm weather (especially during the day) and plenty of water; but remember that higher elevations have colder weather and more rainfall. Many places in Sardinia (especially the western part) are very windy from September to April, all drivers, and in particular with tourists, should take extra care.

Some open sea beaches are famous for strong underwater currents (in particular, on the west coast); be careful, there are not always warning signs. Check with your hotel or local people. The Mediterranean is not a lily pond, and several people die every year due to strong waves. Watch the weather.

Be careful when hiking in the old parts of Sardinia (Sulcis Iglesiente, Sarrabus, Nurra). Local authorities have closed many hazardous areas, but some still remain. Do not venture into closed areas (look for the words Pericolo [Dangerous] or common warning signs). If you want to explore the mines, go to your local travel information agency; they will arrange a group tour for you. There you can meet people (mostly ex-miners) who organize their own tours: avoid them as they are illegal and extremely unsafe because there is a risk of landslides, water infiltration, etc.

Local flora and fauna can be dangerous or a source of discomfort. Three examples:

  • Ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) carry infectious diseases and are endemic in certain areas: avoid tall grasses or close long-term contact with domestic animals (particularly sheep).
  • Deadly mushrooms (including the pale toadstool).
  • Barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis, Sphyraena Sphyraena) is abundant in Sardinia.

Precautionary measures

  1. According to a 2013 survey by Confesercenti (the Italian trade, tourism and services association), Sardinia is ranked first in terms of tourism safety in Italy.
  2. Sardinia has a very low crime rate. But kidnapping, which targets rich (and sometimes not so rich) people, still hasn't completely disappeared.
  3. Please be aware that some urban areas (in particular the Sant "Elia neighborhoods near the football stadium and the San Michele neighborhoods and in Cagliari) are unsafe.
  4. Be careful - do not go to the desert between September and February (check with the hotel for the exact time). There are protected areas (this is the Oasis di Protezione della fauna).
  5. From May to September, fires occur in Sardinia, as in the rest of the Mediterranean. Some fires are spontaneous, but most are due to careless behavior (accidental ignition of fires). Observe the usual precautions. Making fires in forests is generally prohibited.
  6. It should be borne in mind that Sardinia is an autonomous region and Italian laws are replaced by local regulations.

Things to do

Not sure what to do in Sardinia? There is where to go and what to find, what to do, but the island will probably impress nature lovers more than the so-called "clubbers" - lovers of nightlife (with the exception of the Costa Smeralda region, one of the "hot spots" of the Italian show business Jet Set).

Sea

Sailing has become more and more popular in the last thirty years, particularly in the area. The first Italian Challenge Cup in America came from there. There are many ports and some places can only be reached by boat. Don't miss this opportunity if you enjoy swimming.

Islands

There are not many islands yet that might pique your interest. But be sure to visit the Asinara National Park (famous for its albino donkeys) and the Maddalena archipelago in the north of the island of San Pietro (a community of Genoese fishermen) and Sant (actually annexed to the main land since the Roman Empire) in the south.

Hills and mountains

While the most high point Sardinia is under 2,000m (6,500ft) so don't be disappointed: the slopes are steep, there is snow in winter and there are four ski resorts in the Gennargentu area. Hills are everywhere in Sardinia, from the Northeast ridge of Monte Limbara to the Iglesiente region in the southwest, even on the outskirts of the city of Cagliari.

The advantage is that people (including in Sardinia) tend to fill the beaches and the rest remains almost deserted. Popular place for climbers is the Domusnovas area (next to Iglesias), with its beautiful vertical limestone walls. Large caves are available (Dorgali, Oliena, Santadi Domusnovas, Fluminimaggiore, Alghero). There are many hiking trails(although not always well labeled) for both beginners and professionals.

Horseback riding

Sardinia has a long tradition of horse riding. The Sardinian Anglo-Arabian horse is a breed that was created in Sardinia. There are currently several farms and B & Bs offering horseback riding or walking tours on horseback. Riding through the forest along the beaches is a very popular attraction for tourists.

Sardinia is rugged mountains, vineyard slopes, fishing villages, numerous groves of cork, oak, olive, marvelous meadows. Sardinia is an island of 100 colors and 100 scents, an island of sea, mountains, sun and silence.

The history of Sardinia is incredibly rich and interesting: great peoples have left their memory here: the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and later the Spaniards. Numerous baths and amphitheatres, the fortress cities of Palmavera and Tiscali, Barumini, Santa Caterina and Santa Antine, watchtowers, of which there are more than 7,000, magnificent cathedrals in the Romanesque and Gothic style, all this awaits the guests of Italy on this extraordinary, mysterious island... Its virgin half-empty beaches, isolated from the curious gaze of the lagoon and islets (which are so easy to reach by yacht) with fine white sand, emerald-colored water, clean air - are truly unique.

The ancient Greeks called this island "Sandaliotis" which meant "sandal". Since then, local residents have a legend that the Creator, having first set foot on earth, left a footprint on it in the form of a sandal, which has been preserved in the sea to this day in the form of an island and reminds of divine providence. Around 2000 BC Sardinia was inhabited by the powerful civilization of the Nuragi, it is assumed that the name of the ancient buildings "Nugari" originated from them - a historical feature of this magnificent island... These fortresses and watchtowers, built of giant stones in the form of truncated cones, have stood here for more than 25 centuries. The mystery of the origin of the Nuragas has not yet been solved. In addition to the Nuragas, guests of the island can visit: Costa Smeralda - a kingdom of granite rocks, green juniper bushes, virgin beaches and small islets. Sassari is the capital of the island of Sardinia during the reign of the Genoese and Spaniards, 15 kilometers from which the church of the XXII century Santa Maria di Sacardgia has been preserved, as well as it is interesting to visit the Museum of Sanaa with archaeological finds and the Cathedral of the XIV century in the Baroque style. The city of Olbia, founded in the 6th - 4th centuries. BC.

The Roman port of Olbia connected Sardinia and Ostia. Not far from modern airport the medieval fortress of Pedreso Castele is located. In the old center of Olbia, there are several churches from the 8th century. The city of Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia since the time of Rome. The most interesting in Cagliari will be a visit to the cathedral of the XII-XIV centuries. with the grave of Martin II of Aragon, city walls with the Torre del'Elefante tower of the XIV century, the ancient Roman amphitheater of the II century. BC. and the early Christian church of San Saturino, 5th century Arborea. Located west of the Canale delle Acque Medie. The city was founded in 1930. The houses are built in art nouveau and neo gothic style. The municipal building houses a collection of archaeological finds.

Do you know that the foot of the Almighty still stepped on the sinful earth? And this did not happen anywhere, but in Italy. At least, the Italians are sure of this, whose favorite summer vacation spot has been the island of Sardinia for more than one century. It was here, according to legend, that the waves of the pristine ocean washed the divine feet ...

Understand the logic " the mighty of the world this ”, going to the island of Sardinia on the one hand is simple, but on the other - impossible. Are there not many beautiful places on the planet? Yes, and you can pick up something for the luxurious! But those who once set foot on the island will understand everything without further ado. Say that Sardinia has clean air, clear turquoise water, luxurious natural landscapes and excellent service in hotels, it's like saying nothing. Sardinia is a fairy tale! Smells salt sea, eucalyptus, rosemary and grass burnt by the sun's rays give rise to a truly delightful air. It seems that they can not only breathe, it is so tasty that it is worth drinking and eating.

Almost every corner of our planet has its own legend, but once you find yourself on the island of Sardinia, you readily believe in the veracity of the local legend. And it tells how the second largest land area in the Mediterranean got its shape and name. Legend indicates that the "sandal" Sardinia (the shape of the island is very reminiscent of this wardrobe item) is nothing more than the footprint of the Lord God in the ocean. And the beauty of Sardinia makes it impossible to doubt its veracity: paradise oases of typical Mediterranean vegetation, granite rocks, mysterious caves and amazing corals. It becomes clear why millionaires go to Italy and not to the Emirates. Here you will not find ostentatious luxury that overshadows the pristine beauty, but you will find a place of unity with nature, not devoid of the usual comfort.

Sardinia island. A bit of history

For many centuries, the island of Sardinia was a coveted place for many conquerors. Archaeologists continue to find their traces today: ancient and medieval buildings, household items and works of art.
Well, the most famous archaeological finds are nuragi- stone settlements, the construction of which the tribes began in the Bronze Age in the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. The turmoil and civil strife of those times did not give rest: the entire island population was divided into warring clans, and each tribe simply needed powerful protection from its neighbors. It was then that there appeared, resembling wells, twenty-meter truncated pyramids, called. These "wells" directed to the heavens were built from boulders, the length of the sides of which reached 3 - 4 meters. Despite the fact that no mortar has fixed the "bricks" standing on top of each other, more than 8,000 ruins of the Nurags have survived not only in a condition suitable for tourists to see, but also in a form that allows one to imagine their former greatness.

It is clear that the sights of Sardinia do not end with stone settlements. The so-called "road of death" associated with them others Business Cards islands - "tombs (tombs) of giants." In these long crypts, fenced off from the east by a group of vertical stones, the inhabitants of the Nurags buried the dead. And the stone ridge was the border between the worlds of the living and the dead. At the very base of the central stele there is a small hole leading to the afterlife. The burial rite could only be performed on the territory of the dead, and a special road that came up from the end of the grave made it possible not to cross the borders of the dead by living fellow tribesmen.

Of course, by examining "Graves of giants", it is a little wild for our contemporaries to hear about the burial customs of those times. These were not just mass graves in our usual sense. The deceased were carried by the "road of death", laid in the grave and covered with a stone slab. If the space ran out, the dead were simply tamped down, and a new row of the dead occupied the vacated space.

Already in the 7th century BC. The Phoenicians organized their numerous colonies in Sardinia: the cities of Bitia, Nora, Tarros and Sulkh were built. In 535 BC. the island "departed" to Carthage. But even these owners did not stay here for long. In 238 BC. wage laborers, slaves and Libyans raised the anti-Carfagen rebellion, thanks to which Rome captured Sardinia. Vandals occupied the island in the 5th century, and already in the 6th century, in the Carthaginian struggle with the barbarians, Belisarius returned it to Byzantium.

Caught in 1326 under the rule of the Aragonese dynasty, the island of Sardinia eventually became part of Spain. Military actions of Austria "for the Spanish inheritance" led to the capture of the island in 1708 and the consolidation of its ownership by the Rastatt Treaty of 1714 to the Austrians. And in 1720, Sardinia was given to the Savoy dynasty by the Treaty of London, as a result of which, together with Savoy, it was included in the Kingdom of Sardinia, which later became part of the unified Italy.

Cities and provinces of Sardinia

Cagliari

Almost immediately after the founding by the Phoenicians in the 7th-6th centuries BC. the largest island city of Cagliari became and remains to this day a kind of "gateway" to Sardinia. It is located off the coast of Campidano Bay in the very south of the lowland of the same name and stretches along nine limestone hills. The picturesque Urpina mountain attracts the eye with its beauty, and the hill of San Michele with the castle of the Middle Ages and the Cape of St. Elia is even included in the list of Natural Monuments of Europe.

The frequent change of "owners" on the island gave rise to a large number of attractions of different eras. Thus, the Phoenician-Punic period left its bright mark in the form of necropolises on the slopes of the Tuvikseddu hills; the Romans dug out the amphitheater right in the limestone mountain; the Pisans erected Cathedral; and in Royal palace at one time, representatives of the Savoy dynasty lived. It was the Pisans who fortified the Castello hill in the 13th century and organized its offshoots. The Castello quarter of the same name is still a symbol of Cagliari today, and its Sardinian name Casteddo testifies to the identification of the entire city with the Castello quarter. The banner of Cagliari depicts the two 14th century towers of Saint Pancrazio and Elephanta, built by the Pisans to protect themselves from the Aragonese.

Historical streets and quarters are replete with architectural monuments. It is worth visiting the Bastion of Saint Remy in the very quarter of Castello, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which is the cathedral, the Baroque church of San Michele, the Gothic church of Saint Giacomo and the archaeological complex located under the land of Sant'Eulania nella Marina.

In addition, it is the town of Cagliari that is the venue for the most massive folk festival of Sant'Efisio on the island. The most important annual event on the island thanks to the colorful procession of locals in national costumes and the Campionaria fair far beyond Sardinia.

Tavolara

A small islet of Tavolara, or, to be precise, just a rock 5 km long and 1 km wide, northwest of Sardinia, existed in ancient times.
But the first mention of the kingdom of the same name refers only to 1833. The story of the king of Piedmont and Sardinia Carl Albert, who committed cruise in the vicinity of their own possessions. Sailing past Tavolara, he became interested in the island. Learning that the rock is uninhabited, but there are wild goats on it, the king decided to go ashore and hunt. Just before he had time to go around half of the island, a tall, poorly dressed man came out to meet him, who nevertheless behaved very confidently.

- Who you are? The giant asked.

- The King of Sardinia, and you? - Carl Albert grinned. Taking the hunter's rebuke as a joke, the stranger answered in tone:

“And I am the king of Tavolara. My name is Giuseppe Bertoleone. Welcome to my domain!

Perhaps, answered Giuseppe differently and prostrate before the king, there would be no kingdom today. But Karl Albert, admiring the stranger's self-confidence, recognized him as the sole supreme ruler of the island. Since then, the Bertoleone family has grown greatly. They said different things about the sources of their income: either they found a treasure buried by pirates, or they themselves did not disdain robbery ... It is known for certain that in the "name of the king" the Tavolari simply "confiscated" the cargo of all ships wrecked off the coast of the island. But the royal family continued to grow poor and, in the end, sold part. To date, the royal family owns only the Punta Canon scythe.

Gallura

North-east of the island of Sardinia is the province of Gallura, famous for its granite rocks. For more than one millennium, the world's most persistent wind sculptor has created his masterpieces here: erosion has turned impassable rocks into a real exhibition of sculptural compositions. There is also a natural colonnade, a bird's nest on the rocks, and monsters with pointed noses looking into the heavens. And the most famous stone figure is the Capo D'Orso rock, which looks like a bear. She gave the name to the cape and, being the symbol of the entire province, attracts tourists to the top.

The magnificent Cape of Capo Teste is the northernmost point of the Gallura province. Dancing contours of bizarre coastal rocks cut the sparkling sea surface ... True, initially all this beauty had a purely practical purpose for the inhabitants of Sardinia. Here they not only mined granite, but also lived right in the tafoni depressions formed in the rocks.

Sardinia is the only region in Italy where there are no toll motorways. But all roads in excellent condition, with clear markings and pointers. One drawback is that in some places they are very narrow, it is especially scary to ride in the mountains. tight turns... Speed limits in settlements 50 km / h, on the motorway 130 km / h.

For those who do not want to rent a car, the best option to explore the island is buses and trains. But it is worth considering that in sparsely populated towns there are no railway stations at all, and buses can only come once a day. And you can get to very remote villages. Therefore, you should consider renting a car when traveling to Sardinia, as you will be able to see many more remote and charming places.

The demand for rental cars usually increases in July and August, so it is better to book it in advance. Today it is possible online, and in our experience the best sites for booking a car are:

  • Many gas stations only accept local credit cards or just cash at all.

And yet, if you decide to use the services public transport(by buses), then tickets can be purchased at the ticket office of the railway station, at Western Union points or in the bars closest to the stops. If for some reason you did not manage to buy a ticket, you can purchase it directly from the driver. Also, the flight schedule may be limited on Sunday.

  • Railways in Sardinia are served by operators such as Trenitalia and ARST Gestione FDS.

The culinary traditions of Sardinia

The sausages and cheeses of Sardinia are considered some of the best in Italy. Especially appreciated is the Pecorino Sardo cheese made from the milk of local sheep.

Although the local cheeses are very tasty and appreciated in Italy, there are also not very common ones. One of them, its peculiarity is that it contains live insect larvae (cheese fly). Many of our fellow citizens have no idea what it is, because you can't find this in our kitchen, so I suggest watching a short video about Casu Marzu cheese:

Porceddu can be called one of the traditional dishes of Sardinia. roast pig... Moreover, its weight should not exceed 5 kilograms.

Of course, seafood also plays an important role in Sardinian cuisine, especially dishes made from shellfish, tuna, mullet, lobster and squid.

The traditional pasta of Sardinia can be called malloreddus, while various sauces can be used here, but the pasta itself remains unchanged.

Another dish that any good mistress of the island knows how to cook is culurgiones. In terms of the cooking technology, it is somewhat reminiscent of our dumplings, but potatoes, pecorino cheese, fresh mint and garlic are used as the filling.

A popular service in Sardinia is the rental of yachts and boats. Renting a boat will cost approximately 70-90 € (one day). Yachts are a little more expensive and most likely you can rent for at least a week.

Also, do not miss the opportunity to commit boat cruise around the Maddalena archipelago, a guided tour with food tasting, as well as visit a real Italian family and get a master class on cooking lunch - detailed information about all excursions look at Sardinia.

Porto Pollo is a great destination for water skiing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Also the island of Sardinia is a great place for sailing and diving. ...

The baskets woven by local women are very common. Pottery is an integral part of the history of Sardinia, while ceramic products painted in blue on white background. They can be found in almost any souvenir shop on the island. ...
